The End of Evangelion

UNSOLVED MYSTERIES OF EVANGELION

Now that EVANGELION has come to an end let us see how far has the makers of Evangelion answered the perplexing questions and mysteries that they themselves introduced to us in this animation. The fallbacks or inconsistency of any story or plot can be divided into five groups:

  1. Background Mysteries: What is the Human Complement Program? What are the Evangelion Robots? Who really is Rei? Where did the angels come from? What are angels?
  2. Contradictions in the Plot: How did Misato change from a catatonic girl to a lively woman? Who killed Kaji?
  3. Items used in the Story: What is the Tree of Life? Why is the face of Lillith like that? Who is Adam? Why the light wings of Eva-01?
  4. No Explanations on certain terms/items: What is the true description and difference of the Human Complement Program of that of Seele and Gendou? What is really the purpose of Adam in the story?
  5. Trivial Questions: What is the relationship between Gendou and the government of Japan? Why the sudden change of beer of Misato from Ebisu to Bao?

BACKGROUND MYSTERIES: Mysteries introduced in any story should be answered before the story ends. That is the bottom line in writing a story. If a story ends without any explanation of the basic premise and background used, not only would you upset the reader but you would have also condemned your future career as a writer. The movie THE END OF EVANGELION tried to answer a lot of the questions that has bugged this animation and I must admit it has succeeded in most of the controversial parts like the Second Impact and The Human Complement Program. However a lot of the mystery remains about Lillith and how it got here on earth in the first place. The second angel is still unknown. The fans has considered Eva-01 to be the second angel but that was disproven when it was explained in the movie that Eva-01 was a clone of Lillith. There is also the question of Adam and how Seele got hold of it. A lot of the answer to these questions are said to be written in the dead sea scrolls but the story ended without even the hint of what the scrolls says. A lot of questions were answered but new ones follow. Its a whole can of worms.

CONTRADICTION IN THE PLOT: This happens when the editing flip flops or an error in the script was not detected, be it in the premise or the logic in the story. We normally call them bloopers if it is not that serious, like the time when Shinji boarded Eva-01 in episode 19, got absorbed inside and no trance of his uniform was seen inside the entry-plug when they tried to salvage him. In its place was his plug-suit, now without opening his entry plug (to prevent his bio-molecules from spilling over), how did his plug suit get inside and where was his uniform ? If the error is so large that it affects the very foundation of the premise than we have an inconsistency in the plot. One major flaw of the story was why prevent the Third Impact from happening (in the TV series) when in fact the Third Impact is what Seele really wanted (in the Movie) ? Many people argue that the ultimate objective of the story is to show the growth and change that has happened in Shinji's life but things like this Third Impact scenerio can somewhat puzzle the viewer. Another is the death of Kaji, who cares who killed him, but wont you want to know anyway?

ITEMS USED IN THE STORY: Items used in any story be it an artifact or an idea must be explained and connected to the overall plot. However in this animation a lot of the items used were either just for art or to make it look complicated. For example, The Tree of Life, you see it in the opening of the TV series, you see it in the ceiling of Gendou's room, you also see it just before they initiate the Third Impact. But no explanation was given in the animation about why it is so important , why must it be the Tree of Life and not a christian cross? Looking over a book that explains what the Tree of Life is, will not help much either but will only complicate matters.

NO EXPLANATIONS ON CERTAIN TERMS/ITEMS: All terms used in a story must be made understandable to the reader. Any person who has watched the last two episodes of the TV series would complain of not understanding half of it because of the special words used in those episodes. The words are not even listed in a typical dictionary because you can only find them in the glossary of a psychological book or a scientific journal. Word has filtered that these two episodes were hastly done in order to meet the deadline. A professional writer will never sacrifice his work for a deadline. The creators of Evangelion has realized this and thus produced the film. However in the film, no explanation was made to the ultimate fate of Adam.

TRIVIAL QUESTIONS: Like it says it is trivial but it makes you wonder why, for example, did Ritsuko change from her swimsuit in episode 1 to her laboratory clothes when she was leading Misato and Shinji to the Eva-01 hangar, despite there was no time to spare, would it not be much of a trouble had she wore the swimsuit all the way to the Eva-01 hangar and showed Shinji for the first time, Eva-01? Also the sudden change of the beer of Misato from Ebisu to Bao kind of makes you wonder?

In order to understand and shed light on the background of this animation, you would need to read the following books that influenced the making of Evangelion.

  1. 2001 and 2010 Space Odyssey by Arthur Clarke. Notice that the monoliths that Seele used are the exact 1:4:9 monoliths used in the novel. In the year 2001, a monolith was discovered in the moon and in the year 2010 monoliths appeared at Jupiter and transformed that planet into a second sun in order to bring life to Europa, one of the moons of Jupiter, which in the novel carried life under the ice that covered that moon. Anyway the monolith in the story symbolizes the bringing of life and evolution much like Seele was depicted in this animation.
  2. Devil Man by Nagai. The single comic book series that Writer/Director Hideki Anno admits to have influenced his life as a writer and thus the creation of Evangelion. The story revolves around the premise that before man there were a race of devils and creatures roaming the earth. These provides the groundwork that maybe Adam and Lillith was here long before we came, and was then discovered frozen in the South Pole. The story ends with the devils fighting man until man's destruction. sounds familiar ?
  3. Do You Love Me? by R.D. Reine. Perhaps people who has watched episode 25 will notice that the english title of that episode is "Do you love me?", Published in 1976, it is a collection of poems by a psychiatrist Dr. Reine. Most of which deals in the topic of "the need for love in this world".
  4. Phantasm of Love and Illusion by Murakami. Writer/Director Hideki Anno mentioned that he got the names of Suzuhara (Fouth Children) and Aida (War Freak) from the main character of this novel which go by the same name. In the novel both of them loved their mother but killed their father, thus influencing the role of Shinji in the story of Evangelion.
  5. Jesus The Man by Barbaras Thieving. A book that tries to explain the Bible by using some of the Dead Sea Scrolls which was made public after its discovery in February 1947. The Dead Sea Scrolls are the center piece relic inside the world of Evangelion.
  6. Kabala and The Group of the Rose Cross by Manly P. Hoole Everything you want to know about the Kabala and The Tree of Life according to Jewish Lore.
  7. The Old Testament The book of Genesis will give you the background of Adam and Eve. In the world of Evangelion, Adam was the first angel and from Adam sprung Eva which is a german word for Eve.
