MS Classics: The Jet Set

By the time the engineers of the Zeonic Company had completed the Gouf, new technologies had emerged that made it effectively obsolete - ironically, technologies derived from the Gouf's own development process. It was the upstart Zimmad Company that devised the next generation of land combat mobile suit, a jet-propelled design that could hover swiftly across any terrain.

MS-07B GOUF

The mass-produced Gouf was essentially identical to the YMS-07B, the second prototype version, with supplemental leg thrusters and built-in weapons. The standard built-in armaments were a set of five 75mm machine guns and an electrified grappling cable called a heat rod, installed in the left and right hands respectively. Due to delays in part availability, the first 32 units were produced without built-in weapons; these were given the model number MS-07A, to distinguish them from the fully-equipped B type. Both varieties could also use the machine guns and bazookas designed for the Zaku II.

The most famous Gouf pilot was Captain Ranba Ral, of the Space Attack Force. Dispatched to Earth to avenge the death of Colonel Garma Zabi, Ral battled several times with the dreaded Federation mobile suit Gundam. The electric-blue Gouf he used is said to have been a prototype YMS-07B, essentially identical to the mass-produced MS-07B.

The Gouf's built-in weapons soon proved to be something of a disadvantage. Unlike the Zaku's hand-held weapons, the Gouf's armament couldn't be swapped out for different missions or environments. As a result, several different versions were produced for specific combat roles and geographic regions. The C-3 type pictured here was used primarily on the European front.

Like the previous C-1 type, this model was outfitted with 85mm machine guns in both hands, plus a 30mm machine gun in its forehead. External magazines on its forearms held extra ammunition, and spare magazines were stored on its hips. The leg thrusters were upgraded to compensate for the extra weight of its heavier armor.
