The point is not so much that all the bad guys die and all the good guys
live happily ever after in the end. The real issue is how you got there.
I enjoyed the ending of ST2 (a bit bitter sweet, no?), but what I didn't
enjoy was the lack of challenge. If Red only made the last couple battles
inside Musashi more challenging (and you actually have to work to keep your
teammates alive), I think ST2 would have been a much better game. After
all, one's reaction upon finishing the last battle should be "Alright! I
did it! I kept everyone alive!" as opposed to my reaction upon finishing
the last battle, which was: "Yawn... glad it's finally over. That was a
real breeze."
Upon replay, I decided to let a few Hanagumi members get nailed inside
Musashi to see what happens. And guess what happens? They just "retreat."
So realistically, there was no way anyone was going to "die" even if the
player performed in a lackluster manner. That's why I have a bone with the
melodrama in ST2. After all, if failure is impossible, what's the big deal?
Anyway, that's just my two cents on this issue.

Tom
