SCRIPT (episode 18; version 1.0; 11/23/1998)

OP Heroically, with bravery
OP I'll go on with my life,
OP just a long, long time.
OP But if the two of us should get split up
OP by whatever means,
OP let go of me,
OP Take my revolution.
Title Utena ~ La Fillette Revolutionnaire
OP In the sunny garden, we held each other's hands,
OP drew close together and soothed each other with the
	   words,
OP "Neither of us will ever fall in love again."
OP Everytime
OP Into this photograph of us
OP smiling cheek to cheek,
OP I took a bit of loneliness,
OP and crammed it inside.
OP Revolution!
OP Even in my dreams, even through my tears,
OP even though I'm being hurt,
OP reality is approaching now, frantically.
OP What I want now is to find out
OP just where I belong,
OP and my self-worth, up through today.
OP Heroically, I'll throw away
OP my clothes 'til I'm nude,
OP like the roses dancing all around me, whirling
	   free.
OP But if the two of us should get split up
OP by whatever means,
OP I swear to you, I will change the world.

Miki Somewhere unknown to us, new Duelists are mobilizing against us. Juri Have we been abandoned, then? Miki Maybe the Ends of the World is having second thoughts. Nanami Whatever are you talking about? Nanami We, the Student Council, set the rules for the Academy. Nanami All we need to do is clamp down HARD on the newcomers. Miki It's not that simple. Juri He's right. Nanami What is it? You two look so grim. Nanami Don't tell me it happened to you, too, Juri-sempai. Nanami Oh, my! Really? Nanami Then, what was it like? Did it hurt? Mitsuru Nanami-san! Mitsuru Since it's raining, P.E. will be in the gym today. Mitsuru It looks like you'll be playing basketball, so I brought your basketball shoes. Mitsuru Um... Miki This place is off limits to everyone but those with Council business. Nanami Look, I'm the Student Council President now. Juri Even so, you'd best be cautious. Miki As long as our opponents are invisible, we are at a disadvantage. Nanami What is with those two? Mitsuru Nanami-san, what were you guys talking about? Nanami None of your business, Tsuwabuki. Nanami Grownup stuff. Title Mitsuru's Growing Pains Utena Man, but it's raining hard. Utena I bet the roses would like to see the sun, too. Anthy That's true. Anthy Roses are sensitive to seasonal changes, after all. Utena Nanami and Tsuwabuki-kun? Utena Tsuwabuki-kun sure manages to hang in there. Utena If that were me, I couldn't live that way more than three days. Anthy I'm sure he can because he loves her. Utena I guess so. Utena But it would be nice if she appreciated him. Mari It's not like she appreciates you or anything. Mitsuru Eh? Mari You are so messed up. Mitsuru Oh, it's you, Mari. Mari Carrying her things, making her schedules, running her errands... Mari You're nothing but her manager! Mari You think you can get a girl's attention just because you've been nice to her? Mitsuru It's not to get her attention. Mari Then why? Mitsuru I'm happy just to be allowed to be with Nanami-san. Mari Man, you're bent. Mari You should have a more normal romance. Mitsuru Don't be so stuck up. We're only one year apart, after all. Mari One year or not, older is older. Mitsuru You're no different. Mari Say that again? Mitsuru You're childish right down to your body. Mari Jerk! Mitsuru What's with her? Nanami Tsuwabuki? Nanami Who was that? Mitsuru Oh, nobody, nobody! Nanami Say, Tsuwabuki, don't you have any friends? Mitsuru Friends? Nanami Well, you always come with me to the junior high school building. Mitsuru Does that bother you? Nanami Oh, I didn't say that... Nanami You're so uncute, for a child. Mitsuru I... I'm happier when I'm with you, Nanami-san. Nanami That girl is cute, though. Mitsuru Wh- what's cute about her? Nanami Is she your girlfriend? Mitsuru Just a friend, that's all. Gate Ohtori Private Academy Elementary Student Housing Mari What's this for? You having a party or something? Mitsuru Don't touch that! This is for Nanami-san's lunch tomorrow. Mari All this? Mitsuru Something wrong? Mari You have no idea. Mitsuru Hey! Mitsuru You can't just go and eat food somebody else bought! Mari No matter how hard you work, she'll just eat all the good stuff and run. Mitsuru How do you figure that? Mari Woman's intuition. Mari She's like a black widow, creeping all around you, slowly driving you crazy. Mitsuru You just don't know Nanami-san's good side. Mari Yes, I do! I'm telling you, woman's intuition. Mari She's like a black widow. Mitsuru I'd be satisfied if she ate anything of mine. Mari That's disgusting! Mitsuru How's that disgusting? Mari You'll know when you're grown up! Mitsuru Hey, take this! Mari I don't want anymore. You eat it. Mitsuru Do grownups even eat chocolate? Mitsuru Isn't this an indirect kiss? Girl 1 Where are we going to eat lunch? Girl 2 Well, it's raining out... Mitsuru Nanami-san! Mitsuru Today I've got your favorite fried chicken with asparagus and bacon. Nanami What is it, Tsuwabuki? Mitsuru Uh, your lunch... Nanami I won't be needing it today. Nanami This is Mikage, as in the Mikage Seminar. Mikage Hello. Nanami I'm just thrilled to have been invited to the Seminar. Mikage The pleasure's all mine. My attempts to woo you have been worthwhile. Nanami Well, if you think someone like myself would be of any use. Mikage Then why don't we get a bite to eat and discuss it in more detail? Nanami All right. Mikage If you like, you can attend this Seminar, too. Nanami Oh, no need. After all, Tsuwabaki is just a child, so shall we go? Utena Hmm? Tsuwabuki-kun, what's up? Utena Such serious books you have out here. Mitsuru Utena-san, what does it mean to become an adult? Utena Huh? What does it mean? Utena Well, that's... I think it's a bunch of things. Utena You might say it's a matter of experiencing all kinds of things. Mitsuru All kinds? So if I experience all kinds of things, I can become an adult? Utena I guess. Mitsuru So do you have all kinds of experience, Utena-san? Utena Uh, well... Anthy At our age, we're adults in all kinds of ways, wouldn't you say, Utena-sama? Utena R- Really? Anthy Yes. Utena Is it weird to dream about my prince? Utena I mean... Utena After an underclassman asked me, I wondered which am I: adult or child? Akio How do you feel about it? Utena I don't know. Utena First off, I'm not even sure of the difference between a child and an adult. Akio Hmm... As a star ages, it loses some of its brilliance. Akio You might say it's the same with people. Utena You're the brightest one around right now, aren't you, Mr. Chairman? Utena Snagging such a pretty bride... Akio I guess I am.
Akio I guess I am. Mikage Mamiya, suppose you were to go outside occasionally? Mamiya The rain depresses me. Mamiya It's more peaceful in here. Mikage Won't such a disgusting scene be played unwatched in the darkness? Mamiya By the way, has the next Duelist been chosen? Mikage It's just been noted: a deeply jealous queen and her retainer. Mamiya He's just a boy. Mikage Until last night, he was quite a tough flower bud, Mikage but given the chance, he will burst open easily. Mamiya You're a wicked man. Mikage Beautiful as you are, you cannot capture the Rose Bride. Mamiya I see. Mitsuru So if I get a lot of experience, I'll become a man. Mari Whatcha doing? Mitsuru You again? Mari What are you doing? Mitsuru Watching all kinds of things. So I can become a man. Mari You can become a man by doing that? Mitsuru Yep. Mitsuru You've really been annoying me lately. Why are you following me around? Mari Why are you trying to copycat others? Mari It's obvious that someone who's had one real kiss... Mari ...is more of an adult than someone who's simply seen a million kiss scenes. Mitsuru One real kiss? Mari Ah, ah, this is getting bad. Mari I mean, you're not stupid, but you do have a weird way of thinking. Mari There's this thing called "practice." Mari Don't you even know that? Mari What are you, stupid? Mari You've got no subtlety at all, you baby! Nanami Why, that little... Gate Ohtori Private Academy Elementary Student Housing Nanami Oh, no need. Tsuwabuki is still just a child... Utena You might say it's a matter of experiencing all kinds of things. Anthy At our age, we're adults in all kinds of ways, wouldn't you say, Utena-sama? Mitsuru Coming... Mitsuru Nanami-san... Nanami What were you doing in the A/V room? Mitsuru Eh? Why? Nanami I saw you and that girl in there together. Mitsuru That's all Mari's.. Nanami I knew it. Nanami What were you doing with your so-called friend? Nanami You really like her, don't you, Tsuwabuki? Mitsuru And what if I do? Nanami Huh? Mitsuru I'm short, I don't like bitter things, or serious seminar discussions, Mitsuru ...and Mari's making a fool of me lately, Mitsuru ...saying children don't understand. Mitsuru Why couldn't I have been born in the same year as you, Nanami-san? Mitsuru I want to become a man as soon as I can; to become a man and do all the fun things. Nanami Silly boy. Nanami You don't need to do that. Nanami I like you the way you are now. card INTERVIEW CHAMBER card OCCUPIED Mitsuru 4th Grade, A Class, Tsuwabuki Mitsuru. Mikage Well then, please begin. Mitsuru Well, actually, it's about Nanami-san. Mitsuru She's very pretty, trustworthy, and I've admired her for a long, long time. Mitsuru Even though she was using me a bit like a servant, just being with her was happiness. Mitsuru But... but... Mikage Deeper... Go deeper. Mitsuru It's just that... Mitsuru Somehow I'm not satisfied by only being near Nanami-san. Mitsuru Then my friend Mari starts sticking her nose in here and there, Mitsuru ...and they both look down on me. Mitsuru She laughs at me, the child. Mitsuru I want to become a man! Mitsuru I want to become a man and wreck the world! Mitsuru I want to... I want to... Mitsuru I want to wreck the world! Mikage I understand. Mikage The way before you has been prepared. Mitsuru Where... Nanami Tsuwabuki? What are you up to, calling me to a place like this? Nanami Why are you so quiet, Tsuwabuki? Say something! Mitsuru Now, now... please sit down. Nanami What is it, already? Nanami W- Wait! That's too close, Tsuwabuki! Nanami Tsu- Tsuwabuki? Mitsuru This way, I will become a man. Wakaba It never fails; I bring an umbrella, it stops raining. Utena Why don't you just watch the weather report instead? Utena Eh? TRANSLATOR'S NOTE ON THE EPISODE

Title Mitsuru's Growing Pains
The original title "mitsuru modokashisa" contains a pun. "Mitsuru" is Tsuwabuki's given name, but it's also a (somewhat old) Japanese word which can mean "coming of age".
Utena You might say it's a matter of experiencing all kinds
	   of things.
Mitsuru All kinds? So if I experience all kinds of things, I
	   can become an adult?
Utena I guess.
Mitsuru So do you have all kinds of experience, Utena-san?
Utena Uh, well...
Anthy At our age, we're adults in all kinds of ways, wouldn't
	   you say, Utena-sama?
Utena R- Really?
In this scene, Utena says that becoming an adult is a matter of experiencing "iroiro". "iroiro" basically means "various" "diverse" "all kinds of" things. But depending on the context, "experiencing iroiro" *could* carry some sexual connotation, though a child like Tsuwabuki doesn't notice about it. And especially the way Anthy puts it "being adults in iroiro-na ways" really implies "being adults in the sense of having some sexual experience also". In addition, this scene contains a visual pun. The trio's faces get three different colors. That is because the original meaning of "iroiro" was "some different colors".
Algebra Ubermensch - analysis of endless layers
The original line is "rakkyo no bunkai", and "rakkyo" is a folksy pronunciation of "rakkyou", or "scallion". In Japanese, "rakkyou" often carries the connotation of something made only of endless layers of skins with nothing real in it.
