The movie SPRIGGAN was one of the more highly anticipated movies in the anime field of the Summer of 1998. However from all reports and based on the earlier manga of the same name it does not seem to have been very successful. With this impression over-shadowing the original soundtrack for the movie I had to be careful in this review. As it turns out over all, though, the sound track for the movie is fairly solid and stands decently on its own.
The movie is an action/adventure film revolving around the discovery of Noah's ark and the powerful artifact that it was. There are always groups searching for these powerful artifacts so they can rule the world or destroy it in whatever fashion suits their disposition best.
The sound track contains a decent mix of action pieces and mood pieces that set up a feeling of grand expectation or mystery. It starts out with the track "Jing Ling," which is performed by Saju. It has a compelling active beat with intriguing vocals that lend it an air of intense mystery. The listener have the sense of something great building in front of them. Something powerful. This serves as an excellent theme for the opening a movie promising as much mystery and action as SPRIGGAN was promised to deliver. The music suggests a variety of images flashing across the screen in time with the contagious beat each one of greater impression. The track ends on a slightly slower note so perhaps this is where it segues in to a scene that actually starts the movie.
Most of the rest of the tracks vary between rather standard sound action tracks and scene setting tracks. Tracks four and five are particularly noteworthy in that last regard. Listening to them you expect a scene out of some INDIANA JONES movie where some great portent is being revealed. Other tracks such as "Coding jungle" fill the listener with a sense of mystery and impending action.
Some tracks such as track eight, "Drive in Istanbul," have a nice bit of cultural flavor to them fitting to their title. Eventually though it changes in to yet another action track with percussive vocals and orchestral back fill on a heavy bass beat to carry it along.
On the whole the album is a fair bit of music for a standard action/adventure movie. It does not forge impressive sound patterns and declare a new standard for movie sound tracks like the sound track for AKIRA did. It does not go in to the extremes of mood setting like the sound track for GHOST IN THE SHELL did. It does promise things of the movie that the movie may not deliver. On its own though the album sets good moods, gives decent runs of action and has the occasional bit that fill the listener was a very good impression.
If you are in to the orchestral sound track type of music or if you liked the movie then this one is probably worth looking over. If you are enjoy J-pop style music or something that sets a new boundary for sound tracks only, then perhaps this album is not for you.
