Appleseed is the story of Deunan Knute and her cyborg partner
Briareos Hecatonchires, trained soldiers who end up becoming police
officers in the planned utopian nation of Olympus. However, this
utopia is far from perfect and the two find themselves fighting
superweapons gone haywire, terrorists and fundamentalists bent
on destroying the dream of humanity's future, and internal conflicts
that threaten to tear Olympus apart. An excellently-drawn manga,
although Shirow's plot and dialogue can get a bit complicated
at times. A character to watch for is the cute, adorable and irrepressible
Hitomi, a bioroid who demonstrates some of the finer aspects of
Shirow's character design.
