Dark Warlord Chronicles

Deception of the Soul

Part 9
"Child of Legend"

"You know. If I imagined someone wore the armor before me, I'd picture them with an eye patch too. How can you use the armor without one?"
"Simple." Mekira pointed to his forehead between his eyes. "Two eyes, one focus." His serious look faded slowly into a small smile.
Dais rubbed his forehead again. He looked out of the cell only to see darkness all around. "I wish we could get out of here."
"Unfortunately they learned all my tricks I tried." Seeing the Warlord's discomfort he added. "Sorry. Dream Sight does tend to be like that the first few times. I'm trying to help all I can, but if I give too much of my power they'll sense it, and I'll weaken."
"Who is this 'they' anyway?"
Mekira sat down on the floor and motioned for the other man to do the same before him. A look of confusion at the elf's expression crossed the Warlord's face as he sat. "What I am going to tell you now Dais will seem unbelievable to you. It is something, a legend, we elves have known about, something you weren't told. This information is not usually given out to those in your 'situation'."
"What are you talking about?"
"Perhaps it's best I start at the beginning of this. You must trust me Dais, for what I'm about to say is the truth." Mekira's purplish pink eyes gazed off seemingly through the wall.
The man stood in the forest, looking toward the pathway. He had been waiting for hours and for what? He sighed as he had who knows how many times before this night. Looking up he saw that one of the moons was full, and the other was only half. Something, not a noise, but something just as noticeable caught his attention. He turned around slowly to see what it was.
A figure moved through the trees. It walked up to the man and paused. Her dark features were barely seen in the night. The thing that stood out most was her long curly white hair. "Mekira?"
"The same," the man answered in the dark elf language.
The woman stepped forward a little more. That was when he noticed her holding something in her arms. As she noticed Mekira looking at it, she tried to explain. "He is half of both elf races, but was born human."
"The legend." Mekira looked up. "So you want me to take care of the boy? To send him away from here?"
"There is more." The woman paused, trying to think of the words. "He .. his destiny lies intertwined with yours. He is the one you have waited for."
Mekira's eyes opened wide as he stretched out his arms. The woman gave the baby to him. He glanced down at the newborn who was still fast asleep. "What is his name?"
The dark elf almost replied rapidly, but paused for a moment to translate the name. "Dais."
"He shall be taken care of." As he turned he felt the woman grab his armored arm.
"Promise.. promise me you'll always protect him."
Mekira turned to the woman again, puzzled. Even in the lack of light in the forest he could make out the sadness on her dark face. I've never seen a dark elf who cared like this before. He gave his reply seriously. "I promise to always protect Dais, to never leave his side if I can help it for as long as I live." The woman nodded in satisfaction and left as quickly as she came. The elf glanced at the human child again. "Dais," he whispered.
He gently poked at the wind chime over the crib again. The crying immediately stopped as the child listened to the musical sound. He chuckled lightly. "That's better," the man's voice whispered. The room was bathed in sunlight and the curtains blew a little with the slight wind.
"How long are you planning on keeping that human child?"
"Long enough to find a home suiting him." Mekira almost rolled his eyes upwards. He dreaded his discussions with other elves that frequented his chambers. They all paused and talked to him about the child. As they all did, the other elf left the room rather quickly. Mekira sighed and looked down to the infant again. "How dare they speak so ill of you. Well you'll just have to prove them of their error."
Mekira smiled down at the boy infant. "So where do you want to go little one? Somewhere in Europe?" The baby started crying again. "All right. All right. Just calm down. What about China?" The baby still cried. "Japan," Mekira almost pleaded. The infant quieted down at the sound of the word. "My that sounds like a yes to me." He grinned. "So you think you'll like Japan little one," the elf said in perfect Japanese. The baby giggled in reply. "Japan it is!" Mekira laughed himself. "Dais, you are a clever one."
"What is the legend you may wonder? It is something that has been known for a long time to us, the elves. It is rare that a dark elf and light elf fall in love. You see, the hatred between the races is great, although the dark elves feel the hatred more strongly. We see them more as lost brethren. So relations between the races are quite rare. Even rarer still is the chance that when they have a child, it will be a human child with white hair. If the infant is not killed by a dark elf, or anyone else, it is given to someone who can hide it away from here. There, on Earth, the child is given to a family, and neither ever knows of its true origin. Although, remainders of the mixed blood remains. Those that are children of both elf races have an internal battle between their half ancestral sides. During their life they must battle between these two sides, and finally one shall win out forever. If the light elf side wins, the person becomes a powerful mage and defender. If the dark elf side wins, the person becomes extremely cruel, evil, deceitful, hateful of anything around it. That side yearns to destroy what it deems as its true enemies. Usually this presents little problems since the child is rare, as I said, and there is a balance that emerges.
"We do not let the child know its heritage lest it use this to its advantage. He or she may seek out powers if they lean to the dark elf blood. Besides, it is hard to enter this world. Then there are elves who look down on human children who are results of this crossbreed. They prefer the blood to stay pure." Mekira sighed and shook his head. "As you well know, I do not believe in that. I judge a person for being just that, a person. I believe only a fool would pick out such meaningless things, for it brings no clear advantage. What advantage could exist in underestimating?"
The elf looked at Dais again, locking gazes. "I know this is a lot for you. It will take time to comprehend. You must accept what I've said for it is true. Only when you accept this will you begin to understand everything. With that understanding you'll reach a new inner peace, and your serenity kanji will help you more than you ever thought." He stood and patted the man's shoulder. "Now. Let's rest from this Dream Sight for a while." Dais was still too much shocked from absorbing the information to do anything else but nod. The two men ended their focus on the ability and vanished themselves back into their bodies.
Outside the cave, a small creature watched, holding onto a branch. The guards turned their attention for a moment and the creature darted in. Its black wings carried it quickly through the shadows. As noises of creatures grew, it dived to the ground to hide and walk slowly past them. As it hoped, they didn't seem to take note of a raven in their mist.
