Watching this movie is much like sitting through Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" - It's confusing and seemingly pointless, but there is a lot of deep meaning buried in the story. This movie has many qualities that gave movie 2 such an artistic following; weird, surreal, philosophical. However, Beautiful Dreamer made sense while this movie is a cryptic mess of disorganised concepts, and disjointed situations. When watching this movie, you really need to stay alert and use your brain. Lum the Forever wasn't as successful in Japan as the other UY films because its elusive plot made it difficult for most audiences to grasp. Therefore it didn't have the same mass appeal. I have to admit that I had to watch it three times to actually enjoy myself. After finally understanding the film, I do really love it, and you probably will too if you give it a chance. It has good animation. The moody music is a little uncharacteristic to UY, but I like it. Most of all it's a film that shows a lot of creativity. Yet there is no clear vision or point to the film. While it is a very imaginitive script, it is executed rather incoherently. The characters are from UY but the story is something is something of a 'shroom induced drug trip. This movie is only reccomended for those who are familiar with UY. As long as you keep an open mind this will be a worthwhile experience. I should stress that people who are relatively new to the series should avoid this movie until they've gotten a fair amount of Urusei Yatsura under the belt.
