Playfully flippant at times but always understanding, Yukari is Hitomi's trusted friend as the two enter their first year of high school. Hitomi confided her affection for Amano on the high school track team to Yukari, and Yukari in return confided Amano's plans to leave Japan to study abroad to Hitomi.

Note: Like Allen and Amano, Millerna and Yukari (Hitomi's friends and rivals on both worlds) also share the same voice in the television series. In the movie, Sóra and Yukari share the same voice. In Katsu-Aki's Shounen Ace manga version of Escaflowne, Hitomi's best friend is named Yukiko, and both are in the drama club instead of the track team. In Yuzuru Yashiro's Asuka Fantasy DX manga version of Escaflowne, Hitomi's best friend is named Yukari as in the anime, but the two friends do not belong to any mentioned school team or club.
