Maaya Sakamoto Talks About Escaflowne

Talk program (addendum to AX Information Station #3)
SkyPerfecTV! ch 724 Animax
2000 June 10, 01:15 (scheduled)

Note: Creator Shouji Kawamori originally set up Escaflowne in his third project planning draft for three kuuru (cour or cours) -- three quarters of a year or 39 episodes, barring holidays and special pre-empting. During pre-production though, the allotment was reduced to 26 episodes. The creators didn't specify what scenes was cut out because of this, if at all. If anything, Bandai producer Minoru Takanashi noted that creators resorted to telling more story per episode instead, which made for the noted fast-paced tempo.

What brief scenes that had to be cut out in the early episodes to fit in the alloted broadcast timeslot were later restored. According to Sunrise production assistant Satoshi Toba, the staff scripted and storyboarded several scenes for some early episodes that had to be cut for television broadcast to fit the timeslot. Lest those scenes be never seen by the public, Sunrise and Bandai Visual decided to release long versions of those episodes with these scenes on the non-rental video tape and laser disc releases. (The choice not to include the opening theme animation in the first episode's broadcast version was the director Kazuki Akane's.)
