Ispano

12,000 years ago by Earth reckoning, the Ispano race built magnificent Guymelefs for the people of Atlantis. After the creation of Gaea and destruction of Atlantis, the Ispano vowed to remove themelves from the fighting on Gaea and migrated to the dimension gap that separates Gaea and Earth.

The Ispano do return to Gaea to repair or build their Guymelefs when summoned via a signaling mechanism installed in their creations. These Guymelefs and the factory ship which produces them are so renown that their "Ispano white" finish is recognized on sight all over Gaea. Relatively few Ispano Guymelefs still exist. Ispano charge exorbitant fees for both the building and the repairing of Guymelef.

Note: Escaflowne director Kazuki Akane suggested that the Ispano may actually be androids created by the Atlantis people. In order to distinguish between the virtually identical-looking Ispano people during production, Escaflowne character designer Nobuteru Yuuki and the staff gave each Ispano a different number of camera eyes. Also, they assigned each one a name corresponding to its number of eyes: Ichiroh, Jiroh, Saburoh, Shiroh, Goroh, and so forth. (Similar to number-based Latin names, these names are common Japanese names that mean first-born [male], second-born [male], third-born [male] .... The names are not actually used in the story itself.)
