Raen is the first Shinma we see. He possesses a little girl named Aiko and steals her life-force. In return, he provides her with an illusionary home, parents and dreams (she was orphaned in a terrible car crash and her parents, knowing they were going to die, gave their blood so that Aiko might live. She knows this and sees herself as a vampire). Acting on Aiko's desires, Raen kills a junior high student, a college student, a business woman and a housewife (possible futures forever barred for her). When Miyu moves to drink Aiko's blood, Himiko stops her, horrified. Miyu obediently stops and she and Larva chase Raen from Aiko's body. In the process, Aiko dies.

When Miyu explains that all Shinma hosts die because the Shinma take away their life, Himiko cries: "Couldn't you save her?" Miyu smiles slightly and says: "I could have, but you stopped me, didn't you."

Ranka is the second Shinma. She is a marionette/doll who turns her victims into living marionettes like her. Miyu, posing as a junior high student, takes an interest in a beautiful young man at the school named Kei. Unfortunately, Kei has fallen in love with Ranka, who is also posing as a school girl. Ranka tells him that she can preserve his beauty eternally, and Kei agrees. Miyu follows Ranka and learns that she is a Shinma. Instead of killing her, Miyu asks why Ranka is interested in Kei. The Shinma, pretending she is not interested in him, lies and says she wants him for a victim. Miyu smiles and says that she wants Kei as a victim too, and that Ranka should leave him alone. Then she leaves, promising to return for Ranka later.

In the end, the competition escalates into a fight for Kei's life. Larva tries to return Ranka to the Dark, but she is stronger and imprisons him in what looks like a sharp spiderweb. Then she wraps Miyu in cloth and tells her that Kei is hers. Miyu frees herself and Larva, then grabs Kei from Ranka and is about to drink his blood when Ranka laughs and Kei returns to the Shinma, walking woodenly. Ranka then reveals that she has been slowly changing Kei into a marionette, like her. In human form, she could not love him, but like that, she can. Miyu bows her head and returns them both to the Dark. Himiko, who was watching all this, looks at Miyu sadly. "You lost, Miyu." Miyu looks puzzled. "I returned the Shinma, Ranka, to the Dark which is its home... I didn't lose." Himiko smiles. "I don't mean as the Hunter... I'm talking about the woman within you." Miyu does not respond.

Ranka is a recurring figure in the manga. She often helps Yui, and even helps Miyu a few times.
