Yamada no Orochi

The Yamada no Orochi is a sleeping dragon that has caused the "Spring of Life" in Ryugenzawa to begin to dry up. Without this spring, Shinnosuke is slowing dying.

Ryoga, Akane, and Ranma along with Shinnosuke and his Grandfather have to defeat the Orochi to get the magical moss that grows on the dragon's back. The moss is the source of the Spring of Life's magical powers, and once the moss is rubbed on Shinnosuke's back, he'll be cured of his life-threatening injuries.

Oni

Ranma, Soun, and Genma travel to a temple to replace the seal on a box that contains an evil Oni. Just as the new seal is about to be placed on the box, Happosai arrives and blows his nose on the seal allowing the Oni to escape.

The Oni makes it's way to the Tendo home and begins to possess various people before finally settling in Kasumi. The only way to drive the Oni out of someone is to punch them, but no one is willing to hit gentle Kasumi. Sensing a great evil in it's presence, the Oni possesses Happosai and powers up to full strength.

One interesting thing about the Oni is that it wears a tiger-striped diaper. This is because Lum and all other Oni characters from Takahashi's other work Urusei Yatsura dress in a similar tiger-striped fashion.

The Evil Oni

The Meaning Behind the Name
An Oni is a Japanese demon that could be characterized as a type of ogre. In traditional literature they seize the souls of the wicked, and are also know to possess people. Male onis are quite ugly, while females are usually beautiful (and can also transform into a more demonic look). Onis also have long, sharp fingernails and horns, which is why Kasumi's fingernails grew so long and small horns appeared on her head after she was possessed. The Oni in Ranma ½ have much in common appearance-wise with the Oni in Urusei Yatsura as mentioned above.

The Phoenix

Tired of being beaten by Ranma, Tatewaki Kuno visits an antiques store and purchases the mysterious Phoenix Egg. The store owner cautions Kuno never, under any circumstances to place the Phoenix Egg on his head.

While walking through a park, Kuno comes across Ranma, and as usual a skirmish ensues. Not wanting to break the egg, Ranma places it on top of Kuno's head where it promptly begins to hatch. The newly born Phoenix immediatly sees Ranma and imprints upon him. For the rest of the day, the Phoenix attacks and annoys Ranma, and helps Kuno defeat him. The novelty of the bird wears off though, when Kuno is unable to get close to his percious Pigtailed-girl. Everyone attempts to force feed the bird growth pills, and in the process the bird becomes much larger and even more aggressive.
