Saffron sends out his loyal followers Koruma and Masala, led by Kiema to retrive a map that would allow him to drain Jusenkyo and complete his maturation into an adult.
Each of the Phoenix People have cursed themselves by falling into the Spring of Drowned Boy (with the exception of Kiema who fell into the Spring of Drowned Girl) in order to disguise themselves around normal humans. This is also one of their few weaknesses, because they are considerably less powerful while in their human forms.
Also of note, Kiema threw Akane into an uncursed Jusenkyo Spring in order to make the Spring of Drowned Akane. Kiema cursed herself in the spring and now becomes an Akane look-alike when splashed with cold water. She uses this to trick Ranma at one point.
