This is my #1 recommended anime for adults who haven't 
seen anime before.  You have to watch the entire series 
pretty much twice in order to understand anything, but 
it's sooooo worth it.  It sucks you in and won't let go!

Shinji Ikari is NOT your normal 14 year old boy.  His 
mother died when he was little, he and his father are 
somewhat...estranged...and he's been living with his 
teacher.  Then he gets a note out of the blue from 
dear-old-dad saying that Shinji should pay a visit to 
his workplace.  Of course, once Shinji gets there, his 
dad tells him he has to get inside this giant robot and 
go kick big-monster-thing butt.  As if Shinji didn't 
have enough problems...

ANGST ANGST AND MORE ANGST!!! But it's very well done 
angst.  This is one of those "If you really wanna be an 
Otaku, you gotta see this series!" shows.  I recommend 
this for 16/17 and up though, because of the complicated
philosophical/emotional/mental issues it brings up.  
Made me want a good stiff drink, and I don't like 
alcohol!!  Plus there's the standard anime repetoire of 
violence and occasional flashes of nudity (nothing too 
graphic, and the naughty bits are conveniently "blocked"
by something...water, opaque part of door, jar of 
toothpicks, etc.).
