Ys I and II, originally Japanese computer games, gained their greatest popularity on the PC Engine CD (Turbografx-16 in US.) Though the gameplay and graphics were fairly simple, Ys I and II were among the first games ever to use CD-base music and cinematic sequences, and thus were real groundbreakers.
Ys III, which rode on the massive success of the first two games, was considered by many not to live up to the quality of the first two, and failed to gain the same popularity.
To counteract this slump in the series, Falcom of Japan released Ys IV for the PC Engine CD, and it went platinum almost immediately, becoming one of the greatest competitors with the Final Fantasy series for best RPG in Japan.
Ys IV was so popular that an anime series was based on it... images from that series are shown here.
Though (since Ys IV hasn't been released in the US) I don't know the plot, I can identify the main character -- Adol Christin, the red-headed master swordsman, chosen by the twin goddesses to defend the land of Ys from evil. The women in the pix are the goddesses.
