OAV introduction:

Makoto Mizuhara is a student of Shinonome High School. He's incredibly smart and talented, much to the dismay of the school president, the shifty and insane Katsuhiko Jinnai. Nanami Jinnai is Katsuhiko's sister, and Makoto's good friend. She's very money minded and entrepeneurial. Masamichi Fujisawa is the cigarrette smoking, sake drinking teacher and night watchman of Shinonome High.

One day, an ancient relic is discovered in the basement of Makoto's school. As Makoto flees from the insane Jinnai, time suddenly stops, and Makoto is called to the relic. A beautiful woman appears from the relic and sends Makoto, and, unknowingly, Jinnai, Fujisawa-sensei, and Nanami, to a distant world called El-Hazard.

Makoto and Fujisawa-sensei are teleported together to the outskirts of the kingdom of Roshtaria, where they save the crown princess of the realm from the Bugrom, hive-minded bug monsters. When they return the the palace to be rewarded, they learn that the royal family is in crisis. And, with a lot of convincing, and a little jailtime, Makoto decides to help them, and that's where the adventure begins...

El-Hazard is an anime with action and adventure with plenty of humor added in. It has plenty of cool and interesting characters, each with their own little twists. The story has plenty of adult themes and references, so is not really aimed towards minors. It has excellent artwork and great animation, as well as a great soundtrack and musical selection. This has quickly become my favorite anime, and I highly recommend it.

TV series introduction:

A different storyline from the OAV, the characters from the OAV are a bit younger, but pretty much the same in personality.

In "The Wanderers," as it is called, Makoto, Jinnai, Nanami, and Fujisawa-sensei are thrown into the world of El-Hazard when a dimensional rift opens up as Jinnai tries to sabotage an experiment of Makoto's.

Makoto and Fujisawa-sensei come and defeat a group of Bugrom, and save the crown princess of the realm, Rune Venus, in the process. Soon after arriving, they discover that Jinnai now leads the Bugrom hordes with Queen Diva against the kingdom of Roshtaria. The adventure begins when Makoto and his friends set out to stop Jinnai before he attains the ultimate weapon with which he intends to conquer El-Hazard.

"The Wanderers" is a good series, but not quite as splendid as the OAV. The characters are pretty much the same, with one or two very noticeable exceptions, but relationships and events in the story are very different. The artwork is fair, and the animation is about the same, which is usually expected of a TV series as compared to an OAV. It isn't quite as humorous nor original as the OAV, but I think it is worth a try. It may not appeal to as many people as the OAV, but it is nonetheless an anime good enough on its own.
