Amidst rising concerns about overpopulation, pollution and the depletion
of resources, the Earth Federation is formed at the turn of the 20th
century. The Federation implements its space colonization program;
only those deemed essential to Federation policy are allowed to remain
on Earth as the rest of the population is forcibly relocated. Resentful
of the policy, but not without new hope, the emigrants move to space and
adapt to their new home. UC 0001 marks the year that full-scale
emigration begins, and by the year UC 0050, 9 billion people -- 80% of
humanity -- have emigrated into space.
Although the majority of the human population now lives in space, the Earth-bound Federation neglects the space colonists and exploits the colonies without any apparent benefits in return. Feelings of resent begin to surmount among the spacenoids, until in UC 0058, tired of the exploitation and Earth-centered policy, Side 3 secceeds from the Federation. Jion Daikun, leader of Side 3, declares Side 3 the independant Jion Republic. Daikun predicts the emergence of "Newtypes," as humans freed from Earth's gravity will continue to evolve into beings with heightened intuition and empathy:
"When humanity comes to live in the vast expanse of outer space, intuitive powers will grow, and human beings will be able to understand, with both their bodies and spirit, all sorts of phenomena. That is to say, this effect will reveal itself individually, but in the end, all of humanity will gain the ability to understand each other as never before."
The Federation imposes sanctions on Side 3, and in UC 0068 Jion Daikun dies of an apparent assassination. In UC 0069, Daikun's advisor, Degin Zabi, turns Side 3 into the Duchy of Jion and declares himself Grand Duke. Perverting Daikun's ideals of spacenoid independance, the Zabi family uses it as a justification to war and prepares Jion for conflict as tensions between the Federation and Jion continue to rise.
In the year UC 0079, Jion declares war against the Federation, beginning what is later known as the One Year War...
