English title: Idol Defense Force Hummingbird

4 part OVA Series: Hummingbird (1993), Summer '94 (1994), '95:Song of the Wind and '95:To the Place of Dreams (Both 1995). IDF Hummingbird is the story of the Torieshi sisters, 5 beautiful young girls who are trying to win the 'Japan Top Pilot Contest'. In this story, Japan has subcontracted its Air Force out to private pilots, many of whom function as Idol teams. Our heroines, through the course of 4 OVAs, pursue their father's dream of winning the contest and becoming the top pilot team in Japan. As a comprehensive summary of the characters and plot of the OVAs is availible at Humminbird's Headquarters, this summary will cover only the basics.

The main characters, introduced in the first two OVAs, are the Toreshi sisters: (eldest to youngest) Kanna, Yayoi, Satsuki, Uzuki and Mina, their mother, Hatsuki & manager, Kudo, and their rivals, the Fever girls, Nakajou Hitomi and Hosokawa Reiko, who are coached by Kato Guro. The father of the family, Yuuma, "disappeared" several years ago while on a foreign mission, and Satsuki, the middle of the three sisters misses him especially. Interestingly, Kato is their father's best student, and provides the romantic element for the OVA's. The plot, briefly, Involves the rise of the sisters to the favorites position to win the pilot competition. However, their rivals are kidnapped, and Satsuki has to decide which of her father's ideals is most important: to win the contest, or to truly be a pilot & help her rivals.

In terms of it's plot, Hummingbird is somewhat average, presenting the typical young Anime girl who is in way searching for her missing father by pursuing his dreams. In the process, she, along with her sisters, must defend Japan. But what makes this a truly outstanding series, aside from the character Deseign and Animation, which improves in each OVA, is the music. Since they are Idol singers as well as pilots, the sisters have several performance opportunities in each OVA, and the music employed is very good. The first main theme "Love Wing" manages to combine J-Pop and the "Danger Zone" theme from Top gun into a truly enjoyable song. The other songs from the First OVA are also excellent examples of J-POP. The Second OVA music continues this , and includes a spanish style love song in the mix. Any one who enjoys the music associated with Anime will want to include this series in their collection.
