Nausicaa is set in post-apocalyptic world where large portions of the earth are covered with ever-encroaching forests and wastelands inhabited by giant insects. The air in these areas is poisonous to humans, requiring them to wear masks.

Nausicaa lives in the Valley of the Winds, one of the few truly pure places left. It is a peaceful valley, protected from the poisons of the forests and wastelands, where people live in harmony with the land. Through her travels on her motorized glider, Nausicaa has developed a unique understanding of and love for the flora and fauna of the poison forests, particularly the insects. One evening, an airship carrying a powerful and ancient weapon crash lands in the Valley of the Winds. The Valley is then invaded by a neighboring country seeking to use the weapon to not only conquer other peoples but to destroy the forests and wastelands in an attempt to reclaim the land for humanity. Nausicaa is taken hostage and thus goes on a journey during which she discovers the true nature of the forests and their insect inhabitants.

This is Hayazo Miyazaki's first feature-length film. The artwork is gorgeous, and the animation is very good, particularly in the flight sequences. In addition, the soundtrack is beautiful- it's in a more classical music style than most other anime.

This is one of my favorite movies. It is endorsed by the World Wildlife Fund for its environmentalist themes, but it's a lot less flowery than it might sound. It has plenty of good action, and very interesting characters. Highly recommended.
