Information written by Wynne Ip.

RG Veda which comes from the Hindu sacred writing Rig Veda is a colorful legendary story featuring gods and religious characters. Although CLAMP borrowed ideas and names from Hindu/Buddhist mythology, RG-VEDA has very little to do with them in terms of story. This manga is CLAMP's first major work.

Before the story actually begins

Three hundred years ago, there was a rebel against the reign of Ten-Tai (Emperor by the gods) by Taishaku-Ten who was then the "god of thunder", which was later refered to as the "Holy War". That was a cruel war. Even the then strongest god-race "Ashura-clan" was defeated by Taishaku-Ten's army. Ashura-Ou, who was the god-king of the Ashura-clan, also known as the Protector Warrior of the god and emperor, lost to Taishaku-Ten. Shashi, who was the queen of Ashura-Ou, betrayed him, and later married to Taishaku-Ten while bearing the child of Ashura-Ou. This child was born together with a brother of a different father who later was known as Ten-Ou. Shashi, who wanted to get rid of this child of the Ashura-clan, even planned to kill him. Since then, the baby Ashura (so called because the heir of a god-king will inherit the position and the name of the god-king) was sealed in a kekkai for 300 years.

The manga

The manga story starts with a prophecy by Kuyou, a star seeress who had served the former Ten-Tai. It was fortold that a group of six warriors, called the Six Stars, would overthrown the power of Taishaku-Ten. This group, led by Ashura, would be known as the dark stars which opposed the Heavenly Stars. And when these six stars gathered together, it would mean the end of Taishaku-Ten's rule.

The anime.

There are two volumes of anime (OAV) produced based on the manga. The first one, name translated as "Ice Castle Fire Hell" was related to the story in RG VEDA vol.4, featuring the "demon princess" Aizen, who should have died 300 years ago in the Holy War.

The story was somewhat altered in the anime, which include Yasha-Ou's attack on Ashura, the addition of Karura-Ou in the crew, and Kujaku's nature and power. The setting of the second OAV, name known as "Twin Castle Fire Thunder" (not sure) was at the Emperor's castle - Zenmijou. As the name of the OAV suggests, there is a twin of the castle -- the Ashura-Jou which was right underneath the castle of the Emperor. In this OAV, Ashura, for the first time in life, met the "brother" Ten-Ou. The shadow of Ashura-Ou also talked to Ashura in the anime.
