Kouzou is the assistant commander of Nerv, and has been a friend of Ikari Gendou since college(although he's much older than Gendou), as well as the proffesor of Ikari Yui, Ikari Shinji's mother. After the Second Impact he discovered the cause behind it, and joined Gendou in the special UN organization which later became NERV.
