More Info: Story Synopsis, Characters, MechanicsGundam ZZ was originally conceived of as a second season of the hit series Z Gundam, but it was ultimately decided that the show should feature an all-new cast (whose ranks almost included a character named "Elbow Smash"!). Of the major Z Gundam characters, only eternal captain Bright Noah and Axis leader Haman Khan make more than cameo appearances; Char's planned appearance was canceled when Tomino was given the go-ahead to do the Char's Counterattack movie.
To balance Z Gundam's melancholy melodrama, this nominal sequel struck a lighter tone. Much lighter. Really, really light. Thus it enjoys a deservedly poor reputation among the serious-minded ranks of Gundam fandom, though it was admittedly a kiddie-pleaser. The title, incidentally, is read "Gundam Double Zeta," while the title mobile suit is the "Double Zeta Gundam."
