Gunbuster is a Japanese OVA (Original Video Animation) released by GAINAX
in 1988 (original U.S. release by US Renditions, U.K. release by Kiseki
Films). Manga Entertainment has recently
re-released the US Renditions subtitled version of Gunbuster. Gunbuster
consists of six episodes, each about 30 minutes
in length. The story places a young girl named Noriko Takaya in the midst
of an interstellar battle for the future of humankind. Her father, Admiral
Yuzo Takaya, is killed in deep space during the first alien attack. Noriko,
as soon as she is old enough, decides to journey into space to fight the
aliens. She attends the Okinawa School for Girls, where she learns both
academics and the techniques of piloting an RX fighting robot. Though not
very skilled, she is chosen by her "Coachie," Lt. Kochiro Ota, to travel
into space. She is paired up with Kazumi Amano (whom Noriko calls oneesan,
or big sister), who is the best student RX pilot at the school. They travel
to the starship Exelion, where they meet Jung Freud, Smith Toren, and other
pilots. They soon learn that Lt. Ota is constructing an immense, powerful
robot named Gunbuster which is Earth's only hope of salvation against the
giant alien horde. Noriko and Kazumi are chosen to pilot Gunbuster. Soon
the battle begins and....you need to see it to find out the rest!
