NEON GENESIS
EVANGELION:  R
ILLUSTRATED ORIGINAL FICTION

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Episode 32:  Strike me! Fight me! Impress me! I will heal!/Rise to grace . . .

Asuka:  What? THAT'S NOT FAIR!  Why should I have to
            baby sit that---that dork?!

Misato:  Asuka, you barely know him . . .

Asuka:  And that's the only good quality I can see, be sure of that!

Misato:  Asuka, this is not just a request . . !

(Asuka paces around the apartment, as Misato sits on her
futon, holding a cup of instant soup. It is late evening. . .)

Asuka:  Why me?  Why not ask that idiot Ikari?  Surly the great Shinji can-

Misato:  Shinji can't do it, so now I'm asking you.

Asuka: Ich kann ihn nicht ausstehen!  What about Ayanami?

Misato:  Unit 0's still not finished yet. . . and besides, Rei is
going to need some time to readjust to it  before
            she can pilot again . . .

(Asuka however, remains visibly angry at the state of things. . .)

Asuka:  (grumbling) How long will this take?

Misato:  Not too long . . .

Asuka:  How long?!

(Katsuragi sighs, looking into her coffee . . )

Misato:  4 to 5 hours . . .

Asuka:  ( nearly hysterical) 4 to 5 HOURS? For a stupid exercise?!
This boy is worse than I thought!

Misato:  Don't be presumptuous! It's not just for him, Asuka!

Asuka:  What?

Misato:  (sighing) Ritsuko thinks it is a better idea if you
both train together.  You and the boy will be
undergoing the same  tests simultaneously.  . .

(Asuka, in a state of disbelief, sits on the couch . . .spitefully, she eyes Misato)

Asuka: (mumbling to herself)  Hmmph . . .and here I thought you weren't
                                            Talking to Dr. Akagi anymore.

Misato: . . . If I have to, I'll make it an order.

Asuka: (sarcastically) Ach---Verdammt! This only gets better and better, doesn't it!?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

(Elsewhere, two stories above and several rooms over,
Anouilh sits in the apartment, speaking into the phone . . . )

Lyn:   . . . Yes ma'am.  Yes, I have-well, sort of.  Yes, I've been
taking the tests . . . they say that I'm  okay for a
beginner, but  I'll need a few weeks practice.  No ma'am.
        They're really nice.  Yes,  I've met some people . . .
Friends?  Well, sort of. But there's this one girl who--oh?
Alright.   Okay.  Yes, I do miss you too.  I promise.  Y
        es.  Good-by, mother.

(He hangs up the phone slowly, as Seyoko enters with her computer . . .)

Seyoko:  That was a long call.  International?

Lyn:  What?

(He turns to see that she is once again installing the laptop into the wall-socket . . .)

Seyoko:  I said International.  Was it an international call?

Lyn:  Oh.  Yeah.  I was just calling home. . . my . .um . . "mum. . "

Seyoko:  Really? That's nice . . .

(She seems to toss the comment out casually, as she is fixated on
the information scrolling up her screen.  Lyn Looks to the window
for a moment, at the city lights which penetrate the blanket of darkness outside)

Lyn:  I guess . . .

(He turns to her once more, as she begins typing again)

Lyn:  Um. . . .What are you doing?

Seyoko:  hmmm?

Lyn:  Every time you come home, you're typing something into
that stupid computer.  Just what's it for,  anyway?

Seyoko:  Well, considering you're my charge here, I guess it won't
hurt to tell you.  Part of my duties at  Synaps, as your
proxy,  is to make regular reports of your progress to my CO.
I do that by my  network connection in here, saving
myself from a load of paperwork when I get back . . .

Lyn:  Oh . . .And-just when ARE you going to leave?

(Okazaki still does not look up from her typing as she answers--)

Seyoko:   When you've adapted well enough to the  environment here to live on
your own . . . or when 2 months go by, whichever comes first.

Lyn:  Hmmph.  I hate to ask this, but just what DO you do?  I mean, besides telling your
bosses what I'm  doing on this trip . . .

Seyoko:  I'm surprised, Anouilh.  Who do you think set up your
accounts here, and transferred your  school records?  Not to
mention being entrusted with your general safety and well being . . .

Lyn:  Safety?

Seyoko:  Of course!  This is a dangerous assignment.  But, then, I'm a career girl-

( the boy stammers as she gives him a wink-- )

Seyoko: I don't  mind taking on such a serious mission if it'll mean a
promotion . . . If all goes well tomorrow, of  course.

Lyn:  (passively) tomorrow?  What's happening tomorrow?

Seyoko:  I convinced those higher ups to schedule your next
round of training exercises for tomorrow- you know,
"survival decision-making in a tactical situation?"

Lyn:  Wh--what?!?

Seyoko: You get to use the big guns then . . .

Lyn:  (surprised) What--What the HELL?  What are you DOING,
Seyoko!?  Didn't you see what  happened yesterday?  I
can barely get the thing to walk!   I Fell on my face! I--I'm not
ready for more than that, yet!!!

Seyoko:  Hmph!  And here I thought you'd be glad you won't have
to sit through another week of  harmonics tests . . .

Lyn:  Seyoko!  I FELL FLAT ON MY FACE!  I - I can't even get the
damn thing to walk upright!  And  you want
them to put  me through some sort of obstacle course?!?
        With weapons?!?

Seyoko:  (Annoyed)  They wouldn't have agreed to it unless you
were ready, Lyn.  In fact, I think the only  reason for the
delay in the first place was finding you another 'guard' or something.

Lyn:  (eyes narrowing) 'Guard?'  You mean Shinji Ikari?
Why--What happened to him?  Is he okay?

Seyoko:  For some reason, after your first test, he didn't want to be
the one to watch over you anymore.   So, they  decided to
wait a few days while they figured out a simulatory program
for your unit 6. .  . Well, I demanded that they order him
to do it . . . and they tell me to wait, they might be able to
schedule another pilot.  So I raised a little hell, pulled some
orders and, well . . .tomorrow!

(Lyn, however, can hardly respond, for he is in a state of mild shock . . .)

Lyn:  Oh, God . . .

(his voice is cut off as he steps into his room, slamming the door behind him.)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

(It is the next morning, Shinji, dressed for school, eats a solitary breakfast.
On the table, the radio is on.  (An light, instrumental piece is playing).Suddenly, there is an interruption--)

Announcer:  This is a special report from N*VTN, Tokyo 3 radio.  As of 0500
this morning (Japanese  standard time) a special announcement was issued to
the Tokai and Chubu districts from Nerv  central command.  It states:
Residents of the sanctioned area are to remain indoors for the  duration of the
alert period, which will begin at 0800 this morning, and end at 1300.
The  purpose of this drill is to perform preliminary tests of the
                    Reconstructed batt. . .

(Shinji pauses for a moment, as thoughts of EVA 6's first test once again course through his mind . . )

                    -(Flashback)- of unit 6 toppling . . .

(Just as Shinji comes back to reality, the news bulletin ends . . .)

Announcer:   . . .-icting cooler weather, followed by a cold front tomorrow
from China.  Stay tuned to  N*VTN, TV-Tokyo 3, for further details
on top of the hour . . .

(As the music once again starts playing, (it is the end of the song), Shinji turns the
radio off.  His book-bag in hand, he leaves home, and begins the long walk to school. . .)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

(Elsewhere, Far, far below, another sort of test is being run in unit 00's cage . . . The EVA,
which has been fully restored, is bound to the cage walls by reinforced forearm restraining
bolts--Maya's voice rings over the PA as the unit's entry plug is inserted . . .)

Maya:  Entry plug insertion complete.

Gendo: Activate the unit.

May:  The main power supply connected. Start the activation system . . .

(In the control room, several dozen meters above the unit's head, Gendo, Dr. Akagi, Maya
and numerous other techs, work furiously as Unit 0 is once more reactivated. . .)

Maya: Voltage increasing . . .

(There is a sonorous hum which fills the background, causing the entire room to vibrate as the EVAs
power levels quickly begin to rise . . .)

Maya: Voltage has  reached critical point: rising!

Ritsuko:  Begin the Second phase of the activation sequence.

Technician:  The pilot has begun initial link up.  Graph normal . . .

Ritsuko:  Begin system phase 2

(On the massive wall screen, a display of hundreds of the EVA's neural
connections appears. . .)

Technician:  Synapses-inserted.  Junction started. . .

Maya:  Pulse transmission complete.

Technician:  All circuits read functional

(on screen, neural connections begin to form, each lighting up as the
numerical values increase. . . around the room, the vibrations begin to increase in pitch. . . )

Maya: The initial contact has no problems.

Technician: Power has been transmitted up to brachial muscles in the upper extremities.
There are no problems with the nerve links.

Maya: Checked. Up to 2540 on the list satisfied.

Ritsuko: Arrange for the third connection.

Maya: Up to 2580 satisfied. Until the absolute borderline, 0.9,
                                                                                        0.7,
                                                                                        0.5,
                                                                                        0.4,
                                                                                        0.3
                                                                                        -absolute borderline . . !-

(Nearly all in the room seem to collectively hold their breath as the count
approaches zero--indeed, It seems to hang there for an instant, but then-)

Maya:  --and rising! Borderline cleared.

(In the cage, the unit seems to straighten up-as energy flows through
its limbs, and a soul inhabits it once more. . . )

Technician:  Evangelion Unit 0, reactivated.

Maya:  Pilot life-signs normal.

Technician:  Pattern continuing to rise.

Ritsuko.  Well done . . . Good work,  everyone.

Gendo:  (pushing up his glasses) As we discussed . . .

(wordlessly, Ritsuko eyes the commander, then nods . .)

Ritsuko:  Maya--  I want to begin an interlock test . . .

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
    (Nearly two hours later . . . above the Nerv subcenter . . .)

Hikari:  Ikari!  Are you listening to me?

Shinji:  Eh . . ?

(Around Shinji and class rep.  Hikari, the quiet chaos of the school lunch break
commences;  Ikari has been sitting with Touji and Kensuke, though today, there is
little conversation (it's simply too HOT . . .) )

Hikari:  You haven't heard a single thing I've been saying, have you?

Shinji:  I guess not. . . sorry .

Hikari:  At least do me the honor of Looking at me when you're not paying attention! Argh, you don't--

Touji:  What is it, Hikari?

Hikari:  Do the three of you know just what the heck's going on with that new kid?
He's been in and out  of class these past 4 days!  And he only started a week ago!

Kensuke:  So?

Hikari:  Why don't any of you care?!??  It's taken this long to get everyone BACK
on track, and now your giving up on the exchange student?

Shinji:  No, That's not it-

Hikari:  Well, Then?

Touji:  He doesn't talk to people much.  It's like he doesn't really care . . .

Hikari:  And do you think that's by choice?

Shinji:  What do you mean?

Hikari:  He is Foreign, isn't he?  Did it ever occur to you that maybe
he doesn't talk to you much because he's got a hard time doing   it?

Touji:  So?  What are you tellin' us for?

Hikari:  He lives close to Shinji, from what I've gathered.  So I'm making it his
responsibility to give Lyn his printouts when he's absent.
That's not too much of a hassle for him, is it?

Shinji:  No, I guess.

Hikari:  Fine.  He's your problem now.

(With this, Hikari drops a small stack of papers on Shinji's desk, turns,
and soon, the trio are alone with the heat once more. . . )

Touji: Wait a minute, Ikari.

Shinji: (taking the papers in hand) what?

Touji:  Hikari's always visitin' Asuka, ain't she?  Why doesn't she have Soryu
            deliver the kid's papers?

Shinji:  Um . . .I don't think Asuka and the new kid get along too well, actually.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

(Elsewhere, several miles away and hundreds of meters below, in a
small room outside number 2 cage, Asuka dons a plug suit.  Not in a good
mood of any kind,  the girl seems irate, mumbling to herself. . .)

Asuka:  Stupid Ana-wheel.  Stupid Shinji . . . coward.   Stupid me for not getting out of this . . !

(She squeezes the trigger on her wrist, and the uniform becomes skin-tight,
following the contours of her body perfectly. . . )

Asuka: (Sighing)  Alright, Asuka.  Let's go. . .

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

(Simultaneously, in a room not 100 meters away, Lyn sits in his own plug suit,
probing the wrist switch . . .On his face is a look of extreme anxiety, for he
does not feel ready for today. . .)

Lyn:  (Thinking) . . . Dammit, Seyoko!  You're supposed to look out for me
here, not get me into things like this.

(There is light whir as the suit seals itself, becoming tight and streamlined . . .)

Lyn: (Thinking) . . . Oh God, What if I screw up?  What'll they say?

(He lies down on the bench, placing his hands over his eyes and
letting out a long, drawn out sigh .  . .)

Lyn: (Thinking) . . .What if I could just stay in here?  Not have to worry
about Evan-gelions, or Seyoko, or training. . .

(Quietly, he stands, walking slowly toward the door.  When his hand
reaches the latch, he looks back at the bench once more. . .then turns the lever,
stepping out into the bay , and heading for the elevator. . .)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

(Nearly 20 meters above, Dr. Akagi, Misato, Seyoko, Maya, and a dozen
technicians man the control center.  The air is slightly at ease, as the final preparations
are made for the double training session . . .)

Ritsuko:  Has the Test area been cleared?

Maya:  Control reports no civilians within the test area.  All non-essential structures
have been placed onto angel attack status

Ritsuko:  Right.  Give me the status of units 2 and 6.

Maya:  Unit 2 is manned and ready to go.  Harmonics and
            synchronization ratio at expected levels.

Misato:  Very well.  launch Unit 2. . .

Maya:  Launch confirmed . . .

(As EVA 2 flies up the launch track, Asuka holds tightly to the control
sticks on either side of her with the ever increasing rush . . .)

Technician:  Eva unit 2 in place.

Ritsuko:  Asuka, can you hear me?

Asuka:  Yes.

Ritsuko:  Take the EVA to the predetermined coordinates, and await further instructions.

Asuka:  (sighing) Roger. . .

Maya:  Control reports Unit 6's pilot has been inserted.  EVA activation commencing.  . .

Technician:  Roger.  Power levels nominal. . .Pilot readings remain unchanged.

Maya:  unit 6 ready for launch.

Ritsuko:  Proceed.

Misato:  Eva 6, launch!

(In the entry plug, Lyn clutches his temples as the EVA speeds skyward-
and recoils from the shock of the sudden stop as it reaches its destination.)

Maya:  EVA unit 6, Launch confirmed . . .

Technician:  Eva unit 6 in place.  Releasing final safeties.

Maya:   All systems at ready status, awaiting further orders.

Ritsuko:  Anouilh?  Can you hear me?

Lyn:  Yes ma'am . . .

Ritsuko:  Asuka?

Asuka: Roger.

Ritsuko:  The exercise will commence as we discussed.  Lyn! Take unit 6 to
the first station in the test area. . .

Lyn:  Yeah. . .

(Slowly, Unit 6 steps away from the launch scaffold.  With every step,
a slight tremor is sent through the ground, as the EVA makes its way to the
predetermined spot, next to Asuka's unit 2.  Though not much shorter,
the flying augmentation makes it bulky, almost squat in appearance . . .)

Ritsuko:  Okay.  We're going to begin the second phase of training.  You will be instructed in the use of the
             standard artillery rifle.

Misato:  I'm sending you one now

(At once, Hyuga inputs the commands . . .several seconds pass, however . . . .)

Maya:  Negative.

Ritsuko:  What?

Maya:  An anomaly's been detected in artillery bay 09's launch mechanism.
            It won't accept the signal . . .

Ritsuko:  can you correct it?

Maya:  Yes-but it will take a moment . . .

Ritsuko:  Fine.  Hold on for a minute, you two. . .

(Inside unit 6's entry plug, Lyn relaxes his grip on the control sticks-
and finds that his fingers hurt-looking to his hands, he realizes he was squeezing
them with all his might-out of severe anxiousness. . . )

(Inside unit 2, Asuka drums her fingers impatiently, looking to unit 6,
which is motionless.  Finally, restlessness gets the better of her . . .)

Asuka:  What's taking so long?

(Ritsuko's voice rings over the radio-)

Ritsuko:  We're having some trouble sending him the rifle-it'll be a couple of minutes. . .

Asuka:  Rrrrrr. . .Why doesn't he just use mine?

Ritsuko:  He's not going to be using LIVE ammunition, Asuka . . .

Asuka:  Oh.

(She sighs.  Several seconds pass, and only the humming of unit 2's
internal systems can be heard-suddenly, unit 6 seems to slouch . . .)

Asuka:  What's with you?

Lyn: . . .

Asuka:  Well?

Lyn:  . . . Nothing.

Asuka:  Oh, really?

Lyn:  (hesitantly) I've nothing to discuss with you.

Asuka:  Well, all I wanted to say was that Unit 6 is a pretty shade of yellow . . .

Lyn:  Oh? Whatever . . .

Asuka: (smiling) much like the pilot, I assume . . .

Lyn:  .  . . What?!

(Asuka laughs to herself, as Lyn recovers a bit . . .)

Lyn:  Well, I. . .I certainly noticed that Unit 2's got 4 eyes.

Asuka:  All The better to see with.

Lyn:  Yeah, but-

Asuka:  What?

Lyn: Well--It makes it almost as freakish as ITS pilot. . .

Asuka:  WHAT?!

Ritsuko:  Cut that out, you two!

Asuka :   . . Sorry . . .

Lyn: Sorry, Ma'am . . .

(Behind Ritsuko, however, Misato can be heard laughing.  . .)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

(In the control center, Maya turns to her superiors--)

Maya:  Jam cleared.  Sending unit 6 the projectile rifle . . .

Seyoko:  He's not going to be using live rounds, is he?

Ritsuko:  Of course not.  Firstly, this is simulatory exercise.  Second, I'm not going to give anyone
with such little experience the capacity to do damage to the city. . .

(on the monitor far above, An armory bay the size of a building rises suddenly
from the ground.  A massive door folds back to reveal an equally massive
rifle, which has been specially modified for training exercises. . . )

Maya:  Launch confirmed

Ritsuko:  Fine.  Send unit 2 a rifle with live feed . . .

Seyoko:  What? I thought you said-

Ritsuko:  (interrupting)  Unit 2 is not here just on a training exercise-She's pulling
guard duty too, or don't you remember the agreement?

Seyoko:  You didn't say anything about live ammunition!

Ritsuko:  (rolling her eyes) Of course-my mistake . . .

Misato:  (quietly) what was that about not doing damage to the city--

Ritsuko:  (annoyed) Oh, Shut up . . .

(Above them, An second armory building rises from the ground.  One side door folds back to reveal a similar weapon (though the basic shape is somewhat different).  Without hesitating, Unit 2 takes it in hand . . .)

Technician:  Unit 6 confirmed armed.  Unit 2:  confirmed as well.

Ritsuko:  Are you both ready?

Lyn and Asuka:  Yes .. .

Ritsuko:  Lyn, you will go first!  Begin the exercise!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

(Above ground, in the test field on Lyn's viewer, something that resembles
the fourth angel appears -instantaneously he is on it, aiming for the small red core
on its chest and squeezing the trigger on the rifle, as he had been instructed.
He hears a deafening staccato of shots, and In his eyes, a barrage of tracer
rounds erupt from the gun barrel, perforating the target . . .

( . . while outside, unit 6 goes through the same motions-however, there is no
target, and the 'bullets' are merely a pinpoint of light, which strikes the digital
enemy dead center. . .)

(. . .On his screen, Lyn sees the angel erupt into flame and smoke-and another,
larger one (res. 6th angel), suddenly appears several blocks to the right of it.
Gritting his teeth, he aims, squeezing the switch again . . .

. . .and the beam, once more, hits the simulated image center.  . .)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ritsuko:  Not bad!  His timing could use a little work, but his accuracy is-

Maya:  Doctor! I think you should see this-

Ritsuko:  (Looking over Maya's shoulder) What is it?

(on the screen above, three more dummies fall)

Maya:  Unit 6-the pilot has not engaged the reticule auto targeting system.

Ritsuko:  What?!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

(The angels begin to appear faster, now:  Two emerging where one
had fallen-Lyn is panting, now-as unit 6 begins sweeping the field, shooting
every red center with near pinpoint accuracy-)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Misato:  He's doing that  . . . Manually?

Ritsuko: (slightly impressed) it would seem so . . .

Seyoko:  It's not entirely unbelievable, considering his past . . .

Misato:  What do you mean?

Seyoko:  Lyn comes from a family who is--shall we say--well off.
As part of his education, he was given
tutoring for several years in marksmanship.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

(The targets begin to appear even faster, in groups of sometimes four,
from all directions.  As the speed increases, so does the movement of unit 6,
which has begun looking about itself, firing full 'bursts' from
the weapon-

Suddenly, however, it starts to fire wildly--hitting targets off center or
missing them entirely. . .)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Maya:  Captain, the pilot's heart rate is bordering the safe limit!
            Respiration has become extremely  erratic!

Ritsuko:  Cut the simulation-Restore viewer to its standard mode.

Maya:  Affirmative

(Onscreen, However, Unit 6 continues to fire wildly--into the sky
above it, all around it--in a frenzy of motions belying horrified desperation . .  .)

Ritsuko:  I said end the simulation!

Maya:  Signal was received and confirmed-the program's been halted-

Misato:  What the hell's he shooting at?!

Maya:  The pilot's cardiac readings have exceeded the limit--
                registering a heart-rate above 180!

Ritsuko: What? He's going to go into fibrillation!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

(Unit 6 swings the rifle out of what seems abject terror, its finger squeezing
the trigger again and again, firing at nonexistent demons that seem to be in the
sky as well as on the ground -)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Seyoko:  What the hell is happening?  Stop this!  You're going to kill him!

Maya:  We can't!  The computer reads all neural connections functional--
he shouldn't see anything out  there!

Misato:  Shut down the unit!

(Suddenly, the EVA shudders, throwing the rifle away--the weapon collides
with the pavement, crushing the road underneath the weight of its casing--
Unit 6 has begun to wail, now-its hands clutching its head as it struggles in what
looks like terrible pain-)

Technician:  Major!  Unit 6 not responding!

Misato:  Cut the power supply!

Maya:  Yes sir!

(Maya sends the commands, and almost instantaneously, the power
cable running into the EVA's back jettisons itself, landing several hundred meters away-)

Ritsuko: Unit 6's power supply has switched to standby -

Technician:  51 seconds of active power remaining-

(Unit 6 continues to stagger about, grabbing wildly into the air--it has begun
roaring now, a horrid, grating noise which reverberates through the city-suddenly,
in its frenzy, it comes into contact with a fixed tower-and begins to slam its forehead
against it, shattering windows on the building and creating massive cracks in the
structure's exterior-)

Seyoko:  What's it doing?!

Misato:  Sever the neural connection!  Break all the circuits!

Maya:  Signal not received--synchrograph diverging--
            THE PULSES ARE FLOWING BACKWARDS!!

Ritsuko:  No!  Not now!! Decreas the pilot's plug depth!

Technician:  No response! Unit 6 is out of control-

Maya:  I've lost all readings on the pilot-

Technician:  53 seconds of power remaining!

Maya:  Heavy damage to the head armor and brain-case-

Misato:  Asuka!  Help him!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

(At once, Unit 2 drops its weapon, tenses, and charges the now berserk Unit 6--
the creature screeches in surprise as Asuka's EVA pulls it away from the building,
pinning its arms behind it.  The unit struggles wildly, and the sounds of rending
metal and armor being stressed to the absolute limit fill Asuka's ears-

    . . .But Unit 2 holds fast . . .)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
(Meanwhile, in the control center . . .)

Ritsuko:  She's got him-

Technician:  45 seconds of power remain-

Maya:  Major!  I'm reading a massive energy surge in the dorsal augmentation-

Misato:  No!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

(Suddenly, the high-pitched whine of energy being shunted assaults Soryu's
senses--and the wings of unit 6, which were folded in their standby position,
suddenly extend, breaking the red Evangelion's grip and sending it hurtling into
a nearby building, which disintegrates beneath the tremendous impact-)

Misato:  Asuka!

(The berserk EVA's wings unfold fully-as the unit arches its back, still roaring-

suddenly, it turns its eye from the sky--to the fallen form of unit 2!)

Misato:  Asuka!  Are you okay!

Asuka:  . . .Nnnggh . . .

Maya:  Major!  Unit 6 approaching unit 2 with increasing velocity!

Misato:  Asuka!  GET UP!

(Onscreen Unit 2 rises slowly, and lifts its head in time to see Eva 6
tearing toward it with incredible speed-)

Misato:  Asuka! MOVE!!

(Miraculously, Unit 2 springs to life, leaping from the path of the wild
Evangelion only milliseconds before impact--sending unit 6 barreling into the ground-)

Misato:  Status of unit 6!

Technician:  30 seconds remaining-

Ritsuko:  Activate the safety system!  Eject the entry plug!

Maya:  Affirmative-

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

(Suddenly, the armor plating on unit 6's occipital area slides aside,
and the long, narrow entry plug shoots out like a rocket:  flying in a
massive arc above the city, before slamming into the ground nearly
2 miles away with a jarring impact-)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Maya:  Ejection confirmed-Unit 6 still out of control-

Misato:  Send a rescue unit to recover the entry plug!

Technician:  24 seconds remaining-

(The Eva , seemingly unaffected by the absence of its pilot, stands with a
shriek--turning once more toward unit 2, which stands at the ready-)

Misato:  Unit 02!  Stay back!

Asuka: AAAAARGH!

(With a defiant shout, the young warrior charges unit 6, which lashes out--
Just before collision, however, Asuka's EVA twists expertly, catching the berserk
Unit behind the head, sending it flying into the ground-

Before it can stand, she is upon it, taking the entire creature into a  full body blow.
The force of the charge is enough to send it shooting through the city, cleaving a
massive ditch in its wake-)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Maya:  Doctor!

Ritsuko:  What?

Maya: Asuka's synchro-rate--it---it just jumped up 10 percent!

Ritsuko:  What!?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

(Outside, the EVA has returned to its feet, and rages madly toward Unit 2.

Suddenly, the red Evangelion's left shoulder-guard opens, revealing the
progressive knife, which the EVA takes in hand and extends.

At once, a sonorous hum fills the air as the weapon begins to vibrate -)

Technician:  Unit 2's prog knife engaged!

Technician:  13 seconds of active power remaining--

Maya:  Synchronization 45% and rising-

(There is a deafening crash as Unit 6 hits 2-Asuka's EVA braces
itself, ducks, then drags the prog knife along the creature's chest, causing
it to spiral off, as fluid erupts forth from the wound- )

Technician:  5 Seconds-4---3--2

Maya:  63% - 70- 85%-

(Above, The berserk EVA Roars one final time--then the light in its eye
seem to dim, and it falls suddenly, limply, in heap, with a shock that can
almost be felt through the control center . . .)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Technician:  all systems shutting down--

Maya:  EVA has been silenced-

Misato:  Give me the condition of the pilots!

Maya:  Asuka is fine-all systems read normal

Technician:  I still get no readings on the boy-

Seyoko:  Anouilh!

Misato:  Status of the rescue unit?

Technician:  They're getting to him now, sir-

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
(Elsewhere, the Rescue and Recovery unit arrives at the site of the downed
entry plug-it is embedded in a heap of rubble, the hatch is trapped under its
immense weight.  A laser cutter and torch are brought in, and soon,
it is breached . . .LCL pours immediately out of the gash, as
Lyn Anouilh's still form is pulled free from the cylinder . . .)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Technician: RR group 15 reports They have him-

Ritsuko:  How is he?

Technician:  He's alive--They've got him on oxygen, extent of injury unknown-

(leaving the control center, Ritsuko shouts to Aoba, pointing at the screen above-)

Ritsuko:   Prepare an emergency medical unit in the O.R. immediately!
Have  the boy brought directly there-

(As Dr.Akagi exits, Okazaki finds her eyes still affixed to
the prone form of unit 06 on the viewer.

several seconds pass before she is able to say anything . . .

and, even then, it is a single word;  uttered in sheer disbelief . . .)

Seyoko:  Lyn . . .
