In the year A.D. 1889, in the midst of reports of a series of mysterious shipwrecks said to be caused by a sea monster, the Paris World's Fair, that hallmark of scientific achievement, was taking place.
It was there that Jean, a boy with a passion for inventions, first met the girl named Nadia, possessor of the mysterious gemstone known as Blue Water.
The mysterious organization Neo-Atlantis wants Blue Water very much. And it is none other than the almighty submarine Nautilus, and her commander Captain Nemo, which rescues Jean and Nadia from their pursuers!

This was GAINAX's first animated TV production. It is a seafaring adventure story, based on the seminal science-fiction classic, Jules Verne's _20,000 Leagues Under the Sea_.
The mechanical designs have all been completely updated, and an individual interpretation added to the setting and storyline. The result is a modern science-fiction anime spectacle, told on a much larger scale than the original.
The war between the Nautilus and Neo-Atlantis spreads across all the Seven Seas, and finally into outer space, in all its glory!
This work of entertainment looks at the romantic period of the 19th Century from a 20th-Century perspective.
