Kubo, having just started college in 1982, spends his days playing tennis and dating. Feeling a vague dissatisfaction with the way his life is going, he runs into Tanaka, an old friend from high school.
Kubo finds himself gradually drawn into the circle which Tanaka and his associates have founded for their pursuit of anime. Finding a new purpose in life in the way of otaku, Kubo, together with Tanaka, decides that he will become the ultimate otaku, OtaKing...
This is an unusual youth ensemble drama, using as it does 1980s otaku as its main cast. It lovingly depicts the unique passion of the period. And while it is, when all is said and done, fiction, this story can also be seen as a semi-autobiography of GAINAX and those who founded it.
Both videos include the live-action mockumentary sequences known as "Portrait of an Otaku", bringing the full picture of people such as these to light with detailed data.
