One day, in a time not too far from now,

a small jet fighter lands at Hardlake Airport, on the West Coast of the U. S., after a show of aerobatics that would terrify any air traffic control crew.

The pilot is one Hayama Miki, an astronaut and new employee hopeful of the Space Planning Agency.

In an age when civilian agencies can fly their own space shuttles, astronauts are in large demand. In a world where the only astronauts are rough-and-tumble men, Miki looks to be far too weak for the job:

"And what do you want here, runt?"
"Pilots fly. It's their job. And I've come here to become a space pilot." "You? A space pilot?!"

Will Miki make it into space after all?
