We get the scoop on Shintani Kaoru's studio, the place where he's produced so many masterpieces. We got to see various precious items which have been used in his work: the model airplanes which served as the inspiration for his Battlefield Stories Series and other military works, as well as other items used for research, such as the Nikon camera which would have to mentioned in any study of the man. We also bring you the stories surrounding these items.

"Flowers don't bloom in the desert, so I had this sense of the Earth making a flower out of stone."
Shintani's encounter with the special quartz formation known as the Rose of the Desert provided the initial impetus for the action manga Desert Rose.

Shintani himself tells the behind-the-scenes stories of how his creations saw the light of day, in super-deformed animated form, together with Pochi, the heroine of Dragon, Inc. The two of them say a lot of funny things (Japanese only).

Pochi's voice is provided by Yamaguchi Yuriko, a.k.a. Akagi Ritsuko of Neon Genesis Evangelion fame.
In the studio corner, we also have the complete text transcript of the interview, including those parts which were not turned into dialogue (Japanese only).

On Area 88: "The readers were actually second-guessing the ending. So I decided that I wasn't going to do an ending that they could second-guess."

Shintani Kaoru has produced a number of excellent aerial action manga, including Phantom Murui and Area 88. For this CD-ROM, we visited JASDF Hyakuri Airbase, which Shintani himself has visited numerous times in the course of creating these stories. While there, we interviewed several members of the service, to give you a taste of what the adventure is really like (again, Japanese only).

Shintani also undertook to paint the nosecone of an F-15 Eagle at the base, which was used in an aerobatics competition. This section of the CD-ROM includes photos of this artwork.
