Problem When playing the DVDs, the screen turns black and white, or snow appears onscreen
Solution These DVDs use copy-protect features to prevent them being dubbed onto videotape.
This means that, while the DVDs will play correctly if the DVD player is connected directly to a TV set, the copy-protection will come into play if the DVD player is connected to the inputs of a VCR or similar device, causing snow to appear onscreen.

Problem Things to keep in mind when playing DVDs
Solution Gainax DVDs are designed primarily for use in standard DVD players. If you wish to view them on a personal computer running Windows, you will need a decoder card to access the data compressed on the DVD. Such devices cost some 40,000Yen in Japan. If you are running a recent version of the Mac OS, on at least a G3 Power Macintosh, you should be able to play these DVDs with an Apple DVD Kit. Gainax makes no guarantee that these DVDs will play correctly on any personal computer system. Furthermore, these DVDs have regional coding for Japan, which may require adjusting your system to match.

Problem Screen is shaky
Solution There may be momentary left-right screen shifts during scene changes. There is no cause for concern, however.
Such effects are done deliberately, at the director's discretion.
