According to the first novel, Kohran moved to Japan when she was 13
years old, so it would be possible that she could have a slight Chinese
accent. She isn't supposed to have a weird Chinese accent though, but
rather her choice of odd speech was because of the American man she was
staying with, Percy Howard. The novel tells that Howard loved the old
capitals in the Kansai area and the two spent a lot of time there,
accounting for her picking up the Kansai dialect and sounding funny
since she was traveling with a foreigner (who didn't speak fluent
Japanese).
