You can set the DVD region easily on some DVD-ROM's, e.g. Creative's
DVD-Encore. In some earlier model stand-alone DVD players, it seems
it's also possible to change/disable the region lock by dip switches or
doing some simple soldering, but doing this will likely void your
warranty, and latter model DVD players don't seem to be easily
hackable.
If you have the DVD-Encore, you can change/disable the region lock
unlimited times using a program called "remote selector". Get it

It has other very neat features too, like disabling Macrovision, converting
framrates from 50Hz to 60Hz and vice versa, and even allows you to use a
PC remote to control the Creative DVD Player!.
