Ming (Tue Apr 22 18:08:03 EDT 1997) [tonic.physics.sunysb.edu]

Sakura Wars is a great game that deserves to be ported to the U.S.
(and everywhere else on Earth ^_^)

Michael Ng (Tue Apr 22 18:49:35 EDT 1997) [overdrive.caltech.edu]

How about if you translate merely the text of the game? It'd
look like a subtitled anime, which would add to the anime-esque
appearance of the entire game. It would also speed development
time because voice actors would not need to be found. In addition,
many anime fans prefer subtitling to dubbing because most American
voice actors pale in comparison to Japanese ones.
Sakura Taisen won the award for BEST GAME in Japan, which
would be a MAJOR selling point here in the States. As long as
people know what they're getting into when they purchase the game,
I believe that those who do buy it will be suitably impressed. (I
know that I was.)
Most gamers realize the fact that Japan has more games than
the US does. They may also feel that Japan has better games than
the US does. Whatever. The point here is, marketing the game as
THE BEST of any platform in Japan would surely sell many units,
even here in the States.
Please bring the game over. I'd buy a copy, even though
I already own an import. It'd showcase the FMV capabilities which
the N64 can't do and the game is awesome enough to turn even
Sony players.

Jason Wang (Tue Apr 22 22:11:10 EDT 1997) [ts10-04.vcr.istar.ca]

Think Sakura Taisen should come to US? Hmm... I don't know whether
the port would compare equally with the original in terms of emotional
quality. Not that I don't want to see Sakura to be sold officially in
North America. I think the American Seiyuus wouldn't make the
glamorous characters stand out. I've been fed up with all the dubbed
Japanese Animes sold in US. The seiyuus often speak plainly or trying
too hard so the characters end up being exaggerated, ridiculed or
should I say, Disney like figures? And will Americans accept all the
chauvinism and self-glorification in the game(which they do themselves
obviously, but never tolerate other nationalities to do it)? Playing
Sakura Taisen should be rather a unique experience for everybody who
bear similar cultural background. Would Americans truely appreciate
the nostalgic beauty of the Taisho era and the idealized, exquisite
Japanese feminism in the game instead of flamboyant, muscular American
heroism which makes up most of the game on the market? I have played
a lot of original RPGs and I actually have both the US and Japanese
version of Suikoden. People say the US version is a perfect
translation of the original, nevertheless it cannot give me the same
emotional outburst when I reached the end of the game. Music may be
the universal language, but inevitably there is something
intranslatable for the spoken one. It would be good to show the
American audience the Japanese way of gaming, but as a loyal Sakura
Taisen lover, I prefer to have it stayed in its purest, most original
form. And I think gamers would be much better served if Sega starts
thinking seriously about a sequel for Sakura than porting a culturally
irreplacable game.

James Tsai (Tue Apr 22 22:40:53 EDT 1997) [a0120.chantilly.mns.net]

Sakura Taisen is the perfect title to diversify the American Saturn
market. Sony's porting many games that arn't mainstream in the U.S.
like Tail of the Sun and Pappa the Rappa, etc. The diversication of
titles in the U.S. is one of the many reasons of Sony's success. If
Sega can't see this, then it's no wonder they are in 3rd place. One
can't succeed without taking some risks.

Eric Malitz (Tue Apr 22 22:48:39 EDT 1997) [www-ac1.proxy.aol.com]

God I want this game....

Nikki W.Pat (Wed Apr 23 01:31:00 EDT 1997) [155.92.130.110]

It would be great to see Sakura Taisen make it to U.S.
I hope that Sega of America starts working on their game support.
It's truely disappointing right now

Master Jedi (Wed Apr 23 11:44:06 EDT 1997) [remotel-16.ccsn.nevada.edu]

Sukura Taisen is "too Japanese" for Americans, come on, give us a
break! Maybe for those, who have no clue about Japanese cultures
whatsoever, but if you ask anyone who play video games in USA whether
they are Asians or Africans or Europeans or Hispanics:
"Do you like Japanese games?" Their answers are the same and simple,
"yes, I do!" Let's talk about a old topic which is a truth: all the
best video games came form the land of video games called Japan!
Every Japanese game which made its way to the US, all became a big hit,
the list goes on and on, Sega of America seems don't understand this.
Come on, open your eyes and see the light of the day!!!
If you are still being confused and foolish, only God will know what
will happen!!!
Good Work! Ming, thanks. .^_^. Jedi

Art Saisuphaluck (Wed Apr 23 14:06:50 EDT 1997) [130.18.146.4]

Let's have Sakura Wars in U.S.

Lutfi Makarim (Wed Apr 23 17:32:54 EDT 1997) [cust111.max33.boston.ma.ms.uu.net]

Sakura Wars is a great game and unique! It's a shame that Sakura
and other Japanese Sega games will never come here, despite the
fact thta RPGs in Japan are flowing like water there...Sega should
never abandon their fans like this...

Gary C. Lynch (Thu Apr 24 08:40:38 EDT 1997) [ww-tb41.proxy.aol.com]

Hello. I would like to say that when I saw Sakura Wars for the first
time, my jaw dropped. This would be a great game to make anime bigger
in this country. It would be a shame not to bring it here...I beg you
to reconsider. Also, I would like to know why Sega seems to be giving
up on American gamers- if this keeps up, PLAYSTATION(: P) will take
over! Thank you for your time and consideration of my letter.

buzie (Thu Apr 24 16:34:34 EDT 1997) [ppp2114.shonan-inet.or.jp]

Sakura Wars limited edition isn't also fairly by Japan.
So, I play Sakura Wars standard version.
But Sakura Wars is great!!!!
I want Sakura Wars special Mouse Pad.
My page is small, but I have 7 piece of Sakura Wars Midi musics
 and a Sakura Wars mp3(Mpeg Audio Layer-3)File and etc.(more MIDIs) .
You can download them.
I can't spaek and write English well.

Jeff Peng (Thu Apr 24 22:48:02 EDT 1997) [y.sm1.garlic.net]

Sakura Wars is great, and definently should be ported to the US. What
is WD thinking? Can't they see by the success of the game in Japan
that it'd be worth it if they translated it? Also, I'm sure Sega isn't
going to abandon the Sega. They've learned from their miserable
failures (32X and Sega CD) that I'm sure they won't do the
same.

Willy Agustinus Tanuwiharja (Fri Apr 25 07:28:48 EDT 1997) [slip202-135-133-68.jk.id.ibm.net]

I hope Sega will convert Sakura Taisen in English version, because
it's too hard to play the game in Japanese. Sakura Taisen is the best
game I ever see, when I saw the opening, I think Sakura isn't the most
common game, boring, etc.
I really hope that Sega company will do it
as soon as possible.
 Thank you very
much.

Steven Chan (Fri Apr 25 20:13:49 EDT 1997) [209.5.28.56]

Sakura Wars is a fun game, but I truly believe that it would not sell
well in North America. First of all, people who really like those
type of games (like me) have most likely purchased the import version.
Furthermore, it is not the type of game that will sell madly in North
America. That honour goes to sports and fighting titles. The game is
too Japanese for the average Joe, and the people who can accept the
cultural-ness of it have probably bought it already (as mentioned
before). And it would be a shame to have it Americanized. Truly,
this game stands as much of a chance in North America as Mortal Kombat
did in Japan.
However, since Ming is building this wonderful site that includes
episode guides, just buy the import, and use this site as an FAQ.
To finish off, most companies bring games over from Japan that they
know will make lots of money. That is why we have our Street
Fighter's and World Series Baseball. Sakura Wars is part dating
simulation, part anime, and part mech simulation. Such a mixture has
not been seen in North America, and that is why it is risky, from a
sales point of view, to bring it over.

Tyougan Rokusya (Fri Apr 25 22:12:02 EDT 1997) [202.237.132.47]

Greetings
Hallo! I came Here with URL written by SEGA SATURN MAGAZINE.

I wrote Why SAKURA WARS don't release in US at SEGA FORUM BBS8 30min
ago without knowlidge of your Homepage.and came Here,HAHAHA.
Your thinking is just as much my thinking.
I realise SAKURA WARS will catch the hart of GEEK in the world!
If there is problum to make US Version,it's SEIYUU!
There isn't SEIYUU out of JAPAN(and not Good), and too little SEIYUU
can speak English in Japan.Japanese version's SEIYUU can't too.
Too happy,Too cry,Overaction voices(like musical) are important.
can't remove.
See you again at SEGA FORUM.

P.S. If English version will be ported,Tell me Please! I'll make
My SAKURA Homepage English version. My homepage include nowaday's
background of SAKURA WARS by Real photo.

David Yau (Sat Apr 26 01:30:05 EDT 1997) [cust20.max16.san-francisco2.ca.ms.uu.net]

I just got Sakura Wars recently even without a translation,
but at least it's an AWESOME game. If Working Designs does decide
to bring it over, then I would buy it again. I would kind of like
to know what the heck they're saying. But, I love anime and a game
that incorporates that, then I just must have it, unless the game
sucks, but in this case, it doesn't. This game MUST come out
everywhere, this game is EXTREMELY FUN! With a little dating
simulation, adventure, and military strategy. BRILLIANT! Sega and
Red need to do a sequel. With all these aspects, this should turn
out to be a hit here. And considering a lot of people are sort of
hyping this game, or just talking about it, eventhough it's not out
here, so this game should do well. But, Vic always says,
"Don't Believe The Hype." Well, believe this one,
Mr. Ireland. This game is one of the best games I've played, and I
can't even read it, that shows how good it is and imagine in
english... mmm mmm mmm. Come on Vic, you can't let a masterpiece
not come out here. I would think this game would be right up your
alley, too. Considering at the games of your past. Hmmm... most of
them have anime on it. If Working Designs do decide to bring it
out, would you consider bringing out a limited edition one like they
did in Japan? I'd buy it, instantly, no matter the cost. If Working
Designs doesn't bring it out, then I don't really care who brings
this game out, but as long as it is here, translated. The
translation doesn't even need to be dubbed, you can just leave it
with english subtitles at the bottom, so it would save time on finding
good voice actors or actresses. The japanese voices are just
perfect already. That's how I watch anime, with only english
subtitles. If I got this game last year, then I would give it Game of
the Year. Well even now, hands down, this is the best game out on
32- and 64-BIT systems. That's why it won the CESA game of the
year. Well anyways, thanks for your time and I hope you really
consider this and everyone's comments on this masterpiece of a game.

Sakura Wars has a lot of potential.
Especially with artwork by Kosuke Fujishima.
Please consider to port Sakura Wars to US.
Thank You

John Seto (Sun Apr 27 11:07:07 EDT 1997) [n104h101.thezone.net]

I think Sakura Taisen is a very great game. It is the best game I
seen for the Saturn so far, especially the character design. If companies
don't release it here it's their lost.

Beri Dian Tomaszek (Sun Apr 27 22:33:50 EDT 1997) [phx-az27-14.ix.netcom.com]

I speak partially representing the 100+ people on the Lunar list,
and it's almost unanimous: everyone is excited about Sakura Wars!
I do hope Working Designs picks it up, for those of us who don't
know Japanese. Lunar wouldn't have been the same with a translation
by people who's jobs are to make games, not stories. I hope you take
the same consideration into Sakura Taisen.
Let's see Althena's Light shine forth into 1920's Japan, 'kay?

PlayOne (Mon Apr 28 08:02:38 EDT 1997) [w3-proxy.nctu.edu.tw]

SAKURA WARS is the best game in SS !!
I love SAKURA WARS !!
I think everyone on the world should try it !!
It will attract your mind !!
The BEST game in SS !!

Vincent Diamante (Mon Apr 28 11:44:13 EDT 1997) [198.76.12.153]

Although I've only been able to watch various
clips and hear songs and other music from the game,
I already know that I would like to have this game
in my game collection...having this ported to the
United States Saturn platform would probably be
the only way I can play this game effectively,
seeing as how I cannot read Japanese and my
spoken Japanese is less than par.

The United States market is severly lacking in
RPGs. A good game such as Sakura Taisen could
be the boost which the Sega Saturn needs to
survive in this highly volatile market. The
Playstation has come to the head of the class
of the 32 bit class due in significant part
tot he appearance of games such as Suikoden
(Konami) and the highly regarded Final Fantasy VII
[by SquareSoft (may I point out that this will only
be the fourth of the series released in America.)]
The Sega Saturn requires a well done RPG like
Sakura Taisen in order to compete in this American
market.

We are in an era where games are the system,
and not vice versa. Case in point, Mario 64
and the Nintendo 64. Another case, Tetris
for the Game Boy. Sakura Taisen may and can
be the Sega Saturn.

Clancy (Tue Apr 29 12:03:54 EDT 1997) [ppp075.hf.rim.or.jp]

As a Japanese, I know how people are fascinated by this game here, and
I'm sure it will be accepted by people all over the world.
If Sakura Wars will be translated to English I think lots of Japanese
will also buy it. First there are lots of ardent fans in Japan,
and they buy almost every Sakura related goods. Second, the Japanese
are very keen to learn English and it will be a good learning material.
As a Japanese Sakura fan, I really want to share the experience of
playing this great game with people all over the world.
Even in Japan, home of all electronic games, I have never seen a game
as entertaining as Sakura Wars. If it succeeded in Japan, it should
succeed everywhere on earth.
If they are concerned about costs, why don't we volunteer for making
English virsion of Sakura wars? I know Ming has translated lots of
materials of Sakura Wars. They use Ming's translation and I will
check his translation and help the rest of translation. In this age
of global network, we can work together where ever on earth. And I
think lots of people will volunteer if they want to use us.
What do you think about it, Ming?

Guess I'm not supposed to comment on others' comments, but since you asked me a direct question, I have to answer ^_^ Clancy, I won't mind helping WD with the porting of the game at all, but I doubt they'll need my help because: My Japanese is barely enough for doing simple translations like in these pages, but it's definitely not good enough for a serious translation project. I imagine they have tons of Japanese-literate personel in WD who can do a much better job ^_^ Meanwhile what I and other fans can do is to make WD and other companies understand that even though Sakura Taisen is culturally very different from what we're used to in the States, we still WANT this game, and very badly! Even though I already owned and played through the Japanese version, I *will* definitely buy the English version as well if it ever comes out. Just my way of rewarding excellence you can say (or maybe I'm just crazy about Sakura Taisen ^_^;) If we can appreciate the foreign cultural elements in games like Powerslave and the totally alien stories like in Panzer Dragoon, I can't see any reason why Sakura Taisen should be any less acceptable to American gamers. Quality games appeal to people of all races and cultures, and Sakura Taisen is one game that oozes with quality!... OK I better shut up now ^_^

paul czajka (Tue Apr 29 20:37:27 EDT 1997) [portal.connect.ab.ca]

I think this is a great game (from the pictures), it might be better than
FF5!! If the game is made it should use the Saturn Upgrade (rumor) or It should
be on the "Black Belt". WD should make this game it better and longer than
Shining Wisdome!!I am a WD games fan but some of their games are way too short.

Zon Chen (Thu May 1 03:05:39 EDT 1997) [d18.jeack.com.au]

Sakura Wars is hard to define. The best I can do is that
its a beautiful game. Everything is perfectly polished,
everything is attractive. The adherence to a cliched anime
formula makes it "charmingly authentic" and all of the characters
have personality, a trait sorely lacking in many western RPGs.
The english language needs more good RPG's and Sakura wars
is one of the best. (Despite not fitting completely into the
typical RPG genre.)

Jen Tapia (Thu May 1 15:56:00 EDT 1997) [ip190.dial-up.highfiber.com]

Anton North (Sat May 3 21:11:35 EDT 1997) [dial46.bc1.com]

I have been VERY frustrated of late at the apparent lack of decent
RPGs being brought overseas to North America. RPG sales are quite high,
and many terrific games are passed up every day. To WD I say, look at
the success of games like "Lunar" and "Lunar: The Enternal Blue" both
of these games were EXTREMELY big sellers, the latter being on a
nearly dead system. Please, RPG fans like me are having less and less
choice but to buy Japanese systems and games. Thank you for reading
this!

Muyo (Sun May 4 21:02:19 EDT 1997) [dial-berk1-12.iway.aimnet.com]

If its popular enough in Japan, why can't WD just wait till it hits the
Playstation and the trnslate it?

Sorry, but this is Saga we are talking about!!!

George Lu (Mon May 5 10:20:18 EDT 1997) [twilight.rh7.imsa.edu]

Let me start off by saying that I would love to see Sakura Taisen in the US and
would buy it from any company that did happen to translate it; however, I think
there are some issues to consider before such things will happen.
First off, I highly doubt that any company will translate ST, especially
since Working Designs declined to do so. Of course, Vic's decision is supported
by good reasons. ST is a *huge* game with thousands of lines of texts, and
a translation would take quite awhile. Also, while there are undoubtedly
many followers of ST in the US market, it would be a bit of a niche game.
Also, if a company translated ST, it would be likely to come under fire from
many sources. The first would probably be those concerned about quality of
translation. ST has a certain feel and attraction that may be lost in translation,
or if nothing else, may have the names mangled by US voice actors or businessmen
who think Japanese names don't go well in the US (as with Sailor Moon). I'm
personally waiting to see how WD does Rayearth to see if Hikaru comes out rignt. :)
Anyway, another thing may be criticisms of the game. What I'm talking about is
like the homosexuality issues that caused Squaresoft to shun Seikendensetsu 3 or
Secret of Mana 2. I wouldn't be surprised if women's rights groups jumped upon
this game. Either that or others complaining about the shower scenes... Hey,
some group claimed that the brief transformation scene in Tenchi Muyo's Mihoshi
Special was child porongraphy.
Again, I'd love to see this game in the US, but I do also think that some issues
are ignored when people demand a translation. Just my opinion. :)

P.S. -- In response to Muyo's comment (can I do this?), it would be unlikely to
see ST on another system. ST takes advantage of some of the Saturn-specific
capabilities such as CyberSound, which (to my knowledge) is a sort of wave table
music synthesis device that is not present on the PlayStation or N64.

mario zarate (Mon May 5 12:35:45 EDT 1997) [200.10.82.115]

I want this game in PERU South America.

daed (Tue May 6 20:09:54 EDT 1997) [palo8.pacific.net.sg]

I'm mostly into rpgs and when Sakura Wars was released....i got it
straightaway because of the excellent graphics... not to mention that
the characters were designed by my favourite manga artist. I love
it.. although I can't understand a thing in japanese... but i've
played the game many times and would like to see a version in
english. I'll definitely get it if it ever comes out.

Jason Kinnison-Holmes (Wed May 7 10:25:59 EDT 1997) [194.203.23.50]

If anyone from Working Designs or other companies interested in Sakura
Taisen is redaing this, please at least consider releasing Sakura
Taisen in English [A PAL version wouldn't be bad either!] as a lot of
people would definently buy the game plus the fan support is already
there through pages such as Ming's. I'm already planning on buying the
Japanese version when I can afford it and would definently buy an
English version on top of it. Another reason why Sakura Taisen would
do well is that some people are tired of the same old types of games
such as fighting and sports and would welcome a chance to try a game
such as this. As long as it's done well, Sakura Taisen in the US oculd
possibly end up becoming another Suikoden in that it could reach
Number 1! Just my 0.01p! Jason Kinnison-Holmes aka Borgman Jayce

Sakura Taisen is the **awesomest** game on the Saturn currently. Your page is
*great*, can't wait till the other sections are finished. May I please
put a link to your page on my site? ^_^; Well, anyways I cast my vote
for Sakura Taisen to be released in the U.S.

Will C. (Fri May 9 11:34:22 EDT 1997) [acslabf7c11.hunter.cuny.edu]

From looking at this homepage, this game really rocks. Excellent
homepage Ming. If I had to wait to experence this title, then I
will. It's too bad that games that win awards in Japan don't come
here because it's "too japanese." How come japanimation is
like the second best genre for videotapes selling in America? Game
companies are overlooking serious games.

Kain Mann (Fri May 9 13:01:03 EDT 1997) [w-lib-01.dtcc.edu]

Sakura wars is the best game I've ever played, even better than most RPG's

Soeharto Djojonegoro (Fri May 9 17:01:21 EDT 1997) [res1072521035.res.lehigh.edu]

A good game like Sakura Taisen has to come out in the States!
I haven't seen the game yet but from all of my friends,
they say its why they haven't sold their Saturns.

JJ Castillo (Sun May 11 13:27:41 EDT 1997) [208.218.128.19]

I think if Sakura Taisen was released in America, it could revolutionize
video games as we know it. It has FMV, a dating game and a war sim all
in one (and since it's in anime, it looks great too!) American game makers
think that a perfect FMV game would be putting in Cheessy actors with
stupid costumes in a dumb situation. Many video games fan might eat it
up (diehard videogamers, anime lovers) but some people might reconsider
because of the "Dating part" of the game. I think that idea is cool. Who would've
thought of that? And with an awesome plot, drawn by Kosuke Fujishima
and all, who wouldn't take this game?! If I had a Saturn, I'd kill
to get this game imported in America (just kidding :)

Steven Chan (not the same person listed already) (Sun May 11 21:26:44 EDT 1997) [ppp-85-10.bu.edu]

About Sakura Wars...

I love the game, but I have to agree with Jason, Master Jedi and the
other Steven Chan (and the other people that feels the same way as I
do) that Sakura Wars is too Japanese (or too Asian). Most of the
Americans don't understand Asian culture; i.e. a big fraction of anime
fans (a half?) in America are Asian American, and Asians make up less
that 10% (sorry if I am wrong) of the whole American population and
lots of these Asian American have already lost their ties with their
Asian cultural heritage. And most of the Americans only know Japanese
cars and electronics or Chinese human rights, but not Asian culture.

I bet most of the supporters of porting Sakura Wars to America (not
including Asians) are import game fans or anime fans; therefore, you
have understanding in Asian culture. But most of the gamers in America
don't play import games nor they understand Asian culture. Most of
them only know are the gaming machines they are plaing -- i.e. the
Sega Saturn itself -- is produced (or designed) in Japan.

To make Sakura Wars "acceptable" in America is to have Americans
really appeciate and understand Asian culture.

Sorry if I have offended anyone with my comments.

BTW, for all those die-hard Sakura War fans ^^; and anime fans,
an anime OAV will be made based on Sakura Wars. I think it will be
coming out later this summer or fall (I don't remember).

Randall Koerte (Mon May 12 00:39:57 EDT 1997) [kauai-54.u.aloha.net]

Sakura Taisen is such a cool game! My friend has it but I want to wait until
someone ports it over here! Please?

James Mark Robillos (Mon May 12 23:14:36 EDT 1997) [qh-2-29.ptw.com]

Sakura Taisen is a great game! I'd like to see it come to the US,
as I can hardly understand Japanese. Converting the text seems like
a good idea, as most US voice actors pale in comparison to the
Japanese seiyuus.

Ken Yang (Tue May 13 07:37:43 EDT 1997) [van-as-01b01.direct.ca]

It might be a little strange see Sakura Taisen translate into English,
but personally I don't mind see Sakura Taisen make it to the U.S. I
mean it certainly great to the fans in the U.S. also good for Sega
because they can make more money :)

Soltan Soheily (Fri May 16 13:27:13 EDT 1997) [ww-tf27.proxy.aol.com]

I would think Sega would want to try anything to try to boost it's
sales so why not try something that is fresh and more adult themed and
attract an older crowd, I have the import version of Sakura Wars,
don't speak a word of Japanese but I still love it. I really think if
the people at Sega were to take a chance with some new type of games
to the American market they might just help themselves out.

Jason C. Lee (Fri May 16 14:07:04 EDT 1997) [128.200.105.53]

I played the Japanese version of the game, and enjoyed it very much,
even though I am only able to reach kangi and nothing else. It should
be ported ASAP, for American players to enjoy. Hopefully, somebody
will pick it up.

How do you do?
I am Japanese game "otaku" university student.
Of course, SakuraWars is one of my favorite games.
SakuraWars is a really wonderful game.
I think that it is very disappointing that such a game can be played only in Japan.
I want to play this game more by the people in the world.

Bring it on!

Ryan Pyrich (Sun May 25 14:06:07 EDT 1997) [ww-tm03.proxy.aol.com]

This game looks like it has all the makings of a great game.
I'd love to see it here and play it.

Jose E. Barragan (Mon May 26 02:45:44 EDT 1997) [37.st-louis-018.mo.dial-access.att.net]

I, for one, would love to see Sakura Wars brought over here to the
U.S. Though I've never played it, I've heard and read so much praises
regarding it, that I'm really going nuts over not being able to play
it. Unfortunately, I know no Japanese, and Sakura Wars is a very
text-heavy game. I would be extremely grateful to Working Designs if
they'd port this game to the U.S. Saturn. I can guarantee that I'd be
one of the first people to buy a copy of this game if it ever came out
here. The Sega Saturn desperately needs great titles like this one,
because so far, the only thing the machine has going for it is its
arcade conversions and the Lunar: Silver Star Story game. Working
Designs is one of Sega's greatest assets, and if they brought Sakura
Wars over here, I have no doubt that a lot of WD fans would buy the
game, simply because of the reputation for quality that Working
Designs has.

Alan Leung (Tue May 27 05:25:15 EDT 1997) [wdl-ca2-24.ix.netcom.com]

I have Sakura Taisen, but I would buy an English port too ... if there
are no dubbed voices. I almost wanted to die listening to the
terrible voice acting in Dragon Force! It would be a shame to have
that happen to such an excellent game. Better mpeg compression
wouldn't hurt either, eh?

Brad Johnson (Tue May 27 13:10:54 EDT 1997) [pm3-3-111.wizard.com]

Unless I am completely mistaken on what it takes to 'convert' said
game, it's much less than what complanies would have us believe.
For the most part, translating the text itself is the work of perhaps
a week. Reoptimizing the code for the changes in text file sizes may
be an issue, but doubtful. The main reasons this title will most
likely never see an American version are these:
1. The sub/dub issue is still a big thing, and always will be. Many
Americans, sadly enough, as a whole still prefer dubs over subs.
This is proven just by the availability of commercial dubs as
compared to subs. With all the speech in Sakura Taisen, (Not to
mention the text timed to the speech in most of the game) the
game would have to be dubbed to attract a larger audience, and
whis would raise the cost for the seiyuu, and lengthen the delay
for release.
2. In Japan, Sakura Taisen is hideously popular. (Duh) Because
of this, that wonderful company Red, would most likely want a
very pretty penny for it's gem. This alone is probably the main
hinderance for porting the game.
3. Even if Sakura Taisen, against all odds is translated, there
is still no real assurance that there is appeal to a large enough
group of people who would buy the game to even cover expenses.
Even if the game had the least amount of work put into it, (i.e.
Keep the original seiyuu, and just change all text in the game)
and every American who currently owns a copy of Sakura Taisen
were to go out and buy a copy of the American release, there
probably wouldn't be enough profit to break even. Sure, there
will be other people that will buy the game now that it is in English
but it probably wouldn't make a significant increase in revenue.

Maybe if there is indeed a market for these 'sim' games in ths US,
(Which will be tested when Princess Maker 2, and Dokyuusei(?)
are released here later this year, it may get picked up as a title,
but for now, I'd learn Japanese, memorize the translations on these
pages, or pray for some kind of miracle, for that's what it will
take to get Sakura Taisen in the States any time soon.

Sakura Taisen is such an awesome game that it's worth spending a
lifetime to learn Japanese to play this game. :-) It is a terrible
shame that the non-japanese speaking audience won't be able to
appreciate this masterpiece. Also, it saddens me that games such as
Final Fantasy 7 is regarded as "the best RPG ever" when
something really good such as Sakura Taisen goes largely unnoticed.

Chad Street (Fri May 30 01:37:50 EDT 1997) [ppp93.bcpl.lib.md.us]

SOMEONE should bring this game over, they'd have a seller on their
hands with a little advertising. It is NOT "too japanese" or "too asian"
or whatever for America, that's a silly idea! People who would even
play an adventure/strategy game are not too stupid to understand that
the game came from japan, who is that dumb? Also, releasing a game like
Sakura Wars would probably help Sega sales in general by showing a
reall strong Sega-only title. If Sega (of America) keeps trying to be like Sony or
Nintendo, they're obviously going to look bad. Just think, Playstation
has nothing like Sakura Wars and Nintendo 64... well... SW is such an
original game. And it's fun. Tons.
If someone DID port the game over (which would be proof that God is
real), I wouldn't mind it being dubbed either. There was once a time
when I would have cried "give me subs or give me death", but there
really isn't anything that great about the japanese voice actors that
GOOD american ones couldn't do, and maybe even improve upon. Check out
Konami's sega CD dub of Snatcher, it's waaayyy better than the japanese.
I'm content to play SW in japanese for now, but I don't understand
the language and the voices are starting to get on my nerves. Will
someone please port this game?!?! Pretty please.

I definitely agree with all those that have posted before in that
Sakura Taisen is one of the most unique games that successfully
combines the genre of a dating simulation with that of a strategy game
making a rpg in the truest sense. It's unfortunate that Sega won't
wise up and take the risk (this risk is really not as big as a risk as
their 32x fiasco, so why not?) of porting this over, even if it were
to be text-only translation. I once thought Sega to be an innovator
and pioneer of video games and now it seems like their only in the
business to make a quick buck. What better way for them to turn
their image around and release this game stateside. I've already
purchased the game and like many of you who have too, I would
buy it again if it did arrive over here to experience the total
atmosphere of the game in understanding it. This is a great game that
will probably not get to be played by many wishing to try something
new or who even enjoy rpgs. That said, it's a great game bar none.

I often call this game my "favorite game that I've never played."
My Japanese is verrrrrry limited right now, but I'm gonna buy the
import anyway just so that I can play the game in the future
(after my third year of Japanese, perhaps).

I would still buy the American version, however . . . I own both
versions of my favorite game, Panzer Dragoon, afterall.

Of coarse you should port Sakura over here! I mean just look at the
sucess other Rpg's such as Dragon Force and Such are doing. The RPG
market in the US is booming right now. After this summer you will see
what I mean with your releases of Lunar, Albert Odessy, and Shining
Holy Ark. I think that is pretty much bull that Sega is not going to
support the Saturn, just look at the summer and 98 line up. Virtual
Fighter 3 is coming out for the Saturn too. If you think the US would
love a game like Lunar , they will adore Sakura Wars

Jeff Howerton (Thu Jun 12 01:31:32 EDT 1997) [206.158.71.87]

Hi there all fellow Sakura Taisen otaku out there. Well I have to
throw my two cents in as well. What can I really add that hasn't been
said already. Sakura Wars is the most wonderfull game I've ever played.
I love it so much!!! There is NOTHING like it on any system. I can
not believe the quality of this game. Every meg of this game is perfection.
From the stunning anime movies, the priceless voice acting (Iris is soo Kawai ^_^ )
to the beautiful character designs, and lets not forget the amazing
story full of suprises, TRUE character interaction, which actually
influences the story (unlike any RPG I've played) great music, endless
replayability cause you have to finish it with every girl (working on
Sumire right now :)~~~~~~ )Every person I have shown this game to wants
to play it intsantly. Some have even said they would buy a Saturn for it!!
It is a game that is just so damn good that ppl would kill for an English ver.
I guess I'll finish my speech now. All I have to say is THIS GAME IS
TREMENDOUSLY UNIQUE AND NEEDS TO BE RELEASED HERE. It will fill a void that
many US gamers need to experience, and believe me. We will all walk
away with a smile on our faces knowing that such masterpieces exist.

hope for this video game war. This is time for SEGA to launch a major
counter-offensive with Sakura Taisen and other WD's title!!

Richard Kim (Fri Jun 13 12:35:58 EDT 1997) [gate.sc-intl.com]

Sega's Genesis carved a niche for itself with sports games. Although
the Saturn is flawed it could carve a niche with hardcore gamers by
being a more "Japanese" system--I think the biggest strength
and weakness of the Playstation is it's "American-ness,"
concentrating on games we're supposed to like, like "Crash"
and "Tomb Raider" and a bunch of lame PC ports. Sega should
bring over everything anime and unique--if mainstream Americans don't
care about the system (and they don't) at least they can sell a few
thousand to people who want the Japanese stuff!

James Lau (Sat Jun 14 05:18:06 EDT 1997) [lynx1158.lynx.bc.ca]

I would LOVE to see Sakura Taisen in the US/Canada...
But make sure it's SUBTITLED and the original dialogue
is left in. =)

Don Nguyen (Wed Jun 18 20:52:28 EDT 1997) [smx-ca1-01.ix.netcom.com]

Sakura Taisen is the most worthwhile Japanese game to port to the US
because:
A) The Cool Art
B) the Involving Story
C) The Strategic Action
D) That cool Intro (nuff said)
E) Great Music (Karaoke!!!)

And that's all.

And PS: NO DUBBING!!! The people in the US who would buy this game
certainly don't want to hear anyone BUT the original Seiyuu, plus it
takes less time, is cheaper (and the Dragon Force voices are "inferior"
[no offense to you, but the best parts were the lame outtakes])

Rol (Thu Jun 19 03:56:59 EDT 1997) [vacaville-d5.cwnet.com]

I personally think that one of the companies that subtitles Anime
should, in conjuction with sega of america, and bring this game out
subtiled. That way the people who would enjoy the game the most,
in this case Anime fans, would be able to play it in it's original
nature. I really don't think that general fans would enjoy subs and
I know that fans of the original would hate the dubbing.
It would be reallynice if pioneer could bring it out.
They could label it with:
"STARRING CHISA YOKOYAMA, SASAMI FROM TENCHI MUYO!".

Oh, well, just a dream I guess.

I have just found out about Sakura Taisen and wars about two or three
days ago and I think it is a great game which should be brought to the
U.S only buy the best Company Working Designs so please consider this
game becase just like your other games you've converted is very good.

Dominic Nguyen (Tue Jun 24 13:21:41 EDT 1997) [smx-ca8-16.ix.netcom.com]

Having just played this game for about 4 days straight (with rest stops
for food and sleep only :), I must say that this is definitely a
game worth porting to the US. The mini-games are especially good
(but Sakura's is HARD!!!), and it's worth beating the game just to see
everyone SD!
The songs are great, the movies are amusing (or depressing, or romantic,
depending on the episode), the art is great, and the voice-overs are
perfect.

Is there anything I missed?

Oh yeah, good 3D, great battles, and a good injection of humor are also
what make this game great...

Although episode 4 scares me. Then again, Iris scares me, especially
her koubu Sure-kill (and also her seiyuu- Wedding Peach???)

Arthur Kosasih (Wed Jun 25 10:49:03 EDT 1997) [proxy8.cyberway.com.sg]

I sincerely hope that Working Designs (or some other company) will
pick up a unique gem like Sakura Taisen and translate it into English.
Ideally they should leave everything alone and translate the Japanese
text, this will help speed up the translation process. Anime is making
a strong push into the U.S. and international markets; this will help
Sakura Taisen's sales when (and if) it comes out as it is a game with
a strong Anime base. The beautiful art, graphics, storyline, gameplay
(and girls) can only fuel its success. Japanese based games are almost
all very successful in the U.S. as people become more aware of Anime and
its roots. The Sony Playststion has reversed its stance on 2-D RPGs and
has brought out several gems (Wild Arms, Suikoden, Revelations:Persona
all come to mind). They are also known for keeping the games intact
(given a little pressure), and supporting more esoteric games (Parappa
the Rapper, The Tail of the Sun). If Sega does not want Sakura Taisen,
give serious thought to the Sony Playstation. When a translated Sakura
Taisen comes out, I will be the first to buy it.

Keung CK (Thu Jun 26 02:25:41 EDT 1997) [yckam010002.netvigator.com]

I think Sakura Wars is the best game of SS,but it may not be ported to
US easily because the whole game is too Japanese, these include the
characters,story background,songs,game type(dramaticAVG),...,etc.Also
if all the names, scripts and songs are changed to English, then the
whole style(old Japanese roman)of the game will lost(furthermore,it is
difficult to translate old style Japanese to English).

Moreover,I think most Americans would not like this kind of Japanese
style game(although some do like it),so I afraid Sakura Wars may only
have a little market in US.

Andrea Gallina (Thu Jun 26 20:49:53 EDT 1997) [195.103.50.39]

I wouldn't care if SAKURA TAISEN would come to an english version ;
I mean ,if some would take on the task to translate the episodes
and upload 'em on the internet,4 me would be the same.

2) Do you want a cinepak wiewer for the ST full-motions ?

Wow! Sakura Wars is a great game! I bought it a while back. Although
I hardly understand Japanese, I still love the game. I have a strong
feeling it will not make it to American shores! If I had a game

I could!). It really is a crying shame though. I mean, hey, it won
best game in Japan! Anyway, I got to go, I'm gonna try and fall in

God, I'd love that, but with the Sega Blackbelt (or Dural, or
Babalouie, or whatever they're calling it) coming out soon in '98,
meaning the end of Saturn support, then It would be kind of impossible
to convert it and still have time to put it out. Unless they put out
a new 64-bit enhanced version for the next system, I couldn't imagine
it.

Jim Lee (Fri Jun 27 00:00:12 EDT 1997) [dialin065.remote.cwru.edu]

Being an otaku and an advid gamer, I would love to see SW ported

Most Saturn owners are hardcore gamers that would buy something like Sakura
Wars if it was ported to the US. If Sega really wants to make surrent Saturn
owners happy, then the would definately port this game over. I would
buy it and I know many others who would too. It's time for Sega to become
a leader again and take chances. If this game were to do well, it could

A lot of saturn fans would pay big bucks to see a game like
sakura wars ported over. I think it would be a lot better
if only text was translated and songs were subbed. I would
pay as much as 100 bucks for a game like Sakura Wars.
Americans are open to many cultures and I think they would
pick up on the game quickly. Maybe SoJ should sub it. I think
that would get them more money over here. We deserve a game

Based on what I've heard and what I've seen, Sakura Teisen needs to be
ported to the United States, either by Working Designs or by SoA. It
seems that Working Designs isn't doing much to satisfy cosumers rather
than pockets (as we originally thought). Sakura Teisen indeed needs
to reach the US!

Chris Chong (Sat Jul 5 09:22:44 EDT 1997) [j55.ptl40.jaring.my]

Actually, it would be a great idea if an English subtitled version of
Sakura Taisen was released worldwide. This is mainly because NOBODY
would want to hear a bunch of lousy talentless English voice actors.

Those who watch ANIME (I'm sure there are a lot of us) would surely
understand what I meant. This game is so amazing it's a bloody shame
everyone is praising other RPGs (like a certain one on the PSX by
Square).

This is one of the greatest RPGs of all time and makes similar games
like Snatcher and Policenauts look cheap! Everyone around the world
deserves to play this game, not just the Japanese. (By the way, I'm
half way through Episode 3... Thanks a lot for your LIPS translations.

all the systems, in this case the ss n psx, they look for game
play story line and innovations, not lonly for grafics, and is true
in the other hand psx fans, most of the time got only the ps
well at least most of the time.
now, then they said is to japanese, well what about samurai rpg
the game is too old japanese, and they got plans release over here
well, samurai is popular among us, but to me is an excuse
thanx god they bring holy ark and others, but we need more

Okay, I would have signed this earlier, but that stupid baka Ian
MacLean gave me the address that went straight to here, so I had no
idea what the game was like. So I scrolled down to the bottom of this
page and was just about to enter your Sakura Wars page until someone
called, which always disconnects me when I'm on the internet (Quite
strange, isn't it?) And so I was going to connect again, but then my
brother tells me we have to go somewhere!!! So, here I am today, after
visitng your Sakura Wars page. It looks like a real kick @$$ game,
and I sure hope it comes over here.

I think it's be great if they bring the game over me and my friends will

Man, I bought a a Saturn just (or mostly) for this game. And barley
know any Japanesse! I do wish someone would port this over, and I
don't care what system it comes out on. I'd just like to see it be
released!! Is someone out there listening?

This looks like it might be a good game. (Wish I could play it) I hope
that if it gets to the USA at all, I hope it will be on the Super NES
or the Nintendo 64. I don't get Sega games any more. And the thing
about too much Japanese is a pathetic reason for it not coming over. I
say it would be a nice change to see another culture's games. There
should be a game company only deticated to bringing over translated
versions of games! Maybe it will at least become an Anime, then it
would at least have a chanse to get over here.

I would like to see Sakura Taisen in the US. The translation should
be a text and subtitle translation. The dialogue should not be dubbed.

Mike Wachovec (Mon Jul 21 14:00:29 EDT 1997) [ppp-207-215-141-85.sndg02.pacbell.net]

I just bought Sakura Taisen for my Saturn. Cool game....I just dont
really know what is going on. On a side note I would like to say it
is sad to see all the RPG's Americans miss out on because big buisness's
decide for us we wont want them.

Son Tran (Tue Jul 22 01:18:11 EDT 1997) [hal-ns1-49.netcom.ca]

I just wanted to say that it is sad that such a GREAT game well not be
ported over. I know a video game clerk who had order the import of
Sakura Wars and I happened to see on the day he brought it to the
store to play while working. The game was AWSOME!!! Perhaps the BEST
game of it's type. One of the major reasons I bought a Saturn and
Planning to get a Game Shark or Converter to play imports.

Usys (Sun Jul 27 09:01:40 EDT 1997) [spo58.homeshopping.com.br]

In first place, I congratulate Mr. Ming for the awesome job. This is
the best game home page I've ever seen. Flawless! And, YES! Sakura
Taisen should be released for the US (and Europe or anywhere else
there is a Saturn). This game was made by the very ELITE of Sega: The
Nextech team, formed by former Telenet Japan team members, who created
the prototype of Sakura Taisen, "Silky Lip"(with the LIP
system), Mr. Ayumi Nishino (simulation part designer) of Rayearth,
Mr. Tomoyuki Ito (director) of Dragon Force and Mr.Tohru Yoshida
(chief graphic designer), writer and character designer of the famous
Phantasy Star series, to name a few. This title should not be dropped
out this way!
When I first read about the game, I told myself "Kore
da!"("that's it!". My computer can't write in
japanese...).That was the game with the system I dreamed of. And when
I played it by the first time, it was not all I expected...NO! It
surpassed my expectations by far! If they just used the same engine
for the Sega RPGs from now on... But, well. This game should be
released out of Japan, too. Everyone should realize the existence of a
game like this. Keep up the EXCELENT job, Mr.Ming!

Sean Bilderback (Sun Jul 27 15:08:01 EDT 1997) [ppp-207-215-141-16.sndg02.pacbell.net]

I believe that it is extremely thoughtless of Sega of America NOT to
pay more attention to the Satuen in American markets. And about
Sakura Teisen, I think it would be great for the game to be subtitled
so some sakura- fans can order it from a foreign market. I own the
game (which I purchased at the Comic Con in San Diego, and I love it.
I just wish I could understand Japanese... ^_^

Garion (Tue Jul 29 01:32:57 EDT 1997) [europa.np.ac.sg]

Well folks, seeing that Sega of America will be abandoning the
Saturn by the end of 1998, it will be highly unlikely that
Sakura Taisen will be released in any form whatsoever.
Instead of releasing the AVG/SLG game which has very little
fanbase in the US market, they would rather release RPGs
like Farland Story, Air's Adventure, Terra Phantastica or
Chaosseed. Sadly though, all the games mentioned above will
not be ported whatsoever. so, why should they bother with
porting Sakura Taisen? It will be a waste of effort.

Folks out there in the US must realize that the Saturn Fanbase
is small compared to PS or N64. SoA is concentrating their
efforts elsewhere, like the PC market. Another point to make,
Sakura Taisen should not be introduced in the future system,
instead, Sakura Taisen 3 should be the one:)

John Christopher Greenleaf Weil (Tue Jul 29 17:56:22 EDT 1997) [ww-tp02.proxy.aol.com]

I like Japan very much (I've been studying its customs since I was
three) and I just thought how great it would be if such a fantastic
game would come out on this side of the Pacific. I would like to do
anything possible to bring this game in any form (other than
untranslated) to the United States. I would just love to fill this
letter with gripes about how none of the great games come to this
country, but I realize how busy you must be.

Raffaele Manzo (Sun Aug 3 00:53:14 EDT 1997) [194.75.44.65]

*Sigh!* ;_; That's not fair! Just 'cause I can't understand Japanese
I'm unable to play all those great games...

R. Nguyen (Sun Aug 3 22:46:02 EDT 1997) [sip-16810.public-dialups.uh.edu]

It would be one of the only reasons I would buy a Sega Saturn, otherwise
I would just get Playstation since FFVII is coming out.

James Nguyen (Tue Aug 5 23:06:50 EDT 1997) [51jrfa.mckenna.edu]

Hee hee,
People have said in this forum before that the ONLY reason
they'd buy a Saturn would be to play Sakura Taisen...well...
um...after seeing the videos on this page and Kyasao's
(kyasao.simplenet.com) and hearing most of the soundtrack..
well...uhhh, I actually just bought a brand spanking new Saturn with an
ST Key, a Extra RAM Cartridge...and well, the Japanese
version of ST! =) I don't know much of the story, yet I still
find it hella enjoyable!! =) Thanks to Ming for the episode guides
though, but I'd be FOOOOOREVER grateful if the rest of the
episodes could be finished! And yup, I'll be among the first to have ST 2
imported too.. =) (Which is not to say I wouldn't mind seeing ST ported over
so I could play it AND understand at the same time!)
^_^

bring this game dammit its so awesome!

Iori Yagami (Wed Aug 6 05:51:35 EDT 1997) [ww-ti21.proxy.aol.com]

Personally, I could careless if this game came to the states. Not one
company has shown great intrest in the "PURE" Japanese games
that are released. Ever since the first NES was produced, many grreat
games where ignored because of how stupid and unknowledged video game
companies are in the states. The fact is that no one over here wants
to put their ass on the line to bring out a game that has even the
littlest to do with something japanese based. Many great games have
been passed up like the missing FF games, or all of the Super Famicom
Dragon Quest games, along with all the other great RPG'S and others.
Another thing that pisses me off is that the American company owners
can't percive why there systems are sinking over here. Maybe it is
because all of the games that are made here are of poor design, low
quality, and are just done half ass, because all that the "FAT,
RICH, COMPANY OWNERS" is more money. THE BOTTOM LINE> THE
AMERICAN DISTRIBUTING AND PROGRAMING COMPANIES DON'T HAVE ANY
BALLS!!!!!!!

Shanoyu Crandor (Sat Aug 9 11:38:26 EDT 1997) [ip187.atlanta.ga.pub-ip.psi.net]

Well, It's obvious, All of the Japanese corprations hate americans...
They are predigoused for some reason beyond mortal comprehenson...
I wonder why it would so much trouble for someone to make a game in
stupid english, then port in into japanese instead.. it would be
easier since when this are translated the companies who do so
seem to complain that english is such a space hogging language...
well.. then why don't they start the game in english?? if it's so
much trouble it seems like it would be even cheaper to do so..

A.Furuichi "Ukyo Kuonji" (Thu Aug 14 03:06:00 EDT 1997) [nts55.dialup.hawaii.edu]

I feel this is a promising game. The amount of work initially put into
this game deserves to come to the US. It's a fresh style and is sure
to be a hit with fans of Ah! My Goddess and Taiho Shichauzo! for the
art if anything.

Shay Brown (Sun Aug 17 19:45:07 EDT 1997) [dial28-30.ibl.bm]

Ian Schmidt (Tue Aug 26 22:04:59 EDT 1997) [aphrodite13.carroll.com]

Are there any plans for a PC version of this game? I have heard of
many similar games, such as Princess Maker 2, coming to the American
PC. And the war/strategy genre is one of the most popular genres on
the PC.

David Lo (Tue Aug 26 22:52:17 EDT 1997) [host2116.tor1.pda.attcanada.com]

Yes, I agree with all the people out there who would like to see
Sakura on a PC platform. Computers will probably never go
unpopular and today's PC technology would provide better
performance and quality than the Saturn format. Hey, if they
convert Final Fantasy 7 from Japanese to English Playstation
and soon English Windows 95, they can do it with Sakura.

I'm not a big fan of an RPG game, but Sakura Taisen really give me a
different opinion. When I decided to buy Sakura Taisen Video Bromide
LD to see what kind of game and art Sakura Taisen has to offer, was I
disappointed? NO! Not a bit! I love the opening song, the character
design, the CG animation, all of them! If I had a chance to get
Sakura Taisen game here in the U.S. I would certainly get it.
	Thanks.

I Love Sakura Wars & Big thanks to you Ming!(for translating and
made this awesome site). Altough I already owned The Japanese Version,
I 100% guarantee YOU (Sega Of America) that I would buy The English
version again.

I am a sakura fan that live in Indonesia, altough I am not American, I
( and surely some other Sega Saturn owners here) would much prefer
English version of SS games to Japanese ones.

I wonder if I could walk into the rooms of Sega CEOs and hypnotized
them for about a year, make them release the English version of all
great japanese RPG games, make lots of money from the selling of those
games, use the money to buy Sony Corp and Nintendo (merger), market a
new 64 bit playing machine called the "Sega Playstation Ultra
64". THAT WOULD BE GREAT!

Jonathan Tsoi (Sun Sep 7 11:17:37 EDT 1997) [dialup190.phnx.uswest.net]

It would be nice if they would subtitle the game and bring it

be subtitled so that I can some idea of what they are saying.

I think I am very lucky. Because I can see "Sakura War".
 Didn't you think so?

I don't own a Saturn at this time, but I think that Sakura Taisen is a
great game I'd certainly buy one to play it... if only the texts were
in english. I would also prefer a subtitled version as japanese voices
are usually better than dubbed ones.

It would be really nice for SEGA to make an English version of
Sakura War, because I can not read Japanese, and therefore I can only
guess from the few Chinese characters for what the story is about.
Morever, I can understand more abour the plot and get more
entertainment from it. However, as many would agree, I wish the
lyrics and voice presentation can remain Japaness, because most, if
not all, English voice actors just do not have the special tone that
enhance the game so much.
P.s. Ming, why the last movie clip(Sakura's Ending) is not on the net?
I had been trying to download that for 2 months!!! (But your

Working Designs is one of two of my favorite game companies. After
hearing how sega of America is not paying any attention to the Saturn
I thought I would have to start taking Japanese in College. But
hopefully Sega of Japan can be covinced there is a market in North
America. I know of many people in my city who would be very interested
in seeing some great Japanese RPGs like Sakura Taisen translated. It'd
be great if us North Americans could see some of these games.

Senshi (Mon Nov 3 10:52:59 EST 1997) [129.94.14.41]

Wow, it's so good to see so many supporters of Sakura Taisen!

Although I live in Australia, I would still buy a translated version
of ST, even though I have finish the game with all the endings :)

But I have to agree with some, that a subtitled version of the game
will be much better than a dub version. I cannot imagine losing
Yokoyama Chisa's beautiful voice! Also, a dub version will mean that
the songs will most probably be lost, AAARRRRGGGHHH, cannot imagine
finsihing the game without my favorite song "Hanasaku
Otome"!!!!

Right now, I'm just waiting for the arrival of Sakura Taisen 2, since
the chance of getting a port is so
dim.....

Shinomori Aoshi (Thu Nov 6 03:02:00 EST 1997) [cy02-pppe6.ktb.net]

I would love to see a English release of Sakura Taisen. Even though I
only have a PSX (had to buy at least one system ^_^x), I would gladly
buy a Saturn only for Sakura Taisen. Being a big fan of Meiji
steampunk, I was enthralled by the whole storyline and the great chara
designs. Personally, I don't see what's the problem with subtitling
the FMVs; Squaresoft had already done this with Bushido Blade (another
good game ^_^x), and I don't see why SoA shouldn't follow suit.

Just my .02 yen...

I think Sakura Wars is the best game ever (even better than Final
Fantasy 7). It should definately be brought to USA, but I doubt if a
english translation could to it justice. The different accents for one
is impossible to translate as are the subtle language tricks or
Japanese. I hope people who own Saturn can maybe get a import version
and experience this masterpeice themselves.

anybody widely distributes an English version. Count me and my friend

I'd like to see it in the US because we get so many crappy games it'd
be cool to get something as refreshing as Sakura Taisen. Asides from
which, anime games have a good market in America. I just hope it also

well....

A translated version of SAKURA TAISEN would be nice, but it seems
most people who have submitted messages of support have it already
in the original!
I understand there is a PC version out... maybe I misread something,
but this would be a better propsition, especially for players here in the
UK, who cannot use US consoles anyway unless they have an NTSC TV
set. I would certainly buy it. I also want one of those toy

I like what I've seen of Sakura Taisen, but everyone should now
be aware that Saga is going ahead with it's 64-bit system, the
Dural. It should be noted that this may be Saga's last attempt to
produce a console. This most likly means an even smaller degree of
support for the Saturn (as far as Saga America goes anyway). I'm just
hoping that the Panzer Dragoon RPG makes it to the U.S. before suport
stops alltogeter!

I'd say the only real hope for a Taisen U.S. release is that an
american anime company like AD Vision or Manga Ent. picks up the OVA's
and put a fire under Saga's butt.

there are so many great games here that are released and never ported

run a multimillion dolaar corporation but i do know there are many
lost dollars in the us market from the poor quality games released
there and so many lost treasures which never make it to the states im
sorry to say ill never buy another us system with the exception of my

because with the exception of a few games all that is in jap. is in

how to grasps the concept of and the horse racing titles just not a
big thing in the us well i guess this will go unnoticed and i would

A company to ask would be Mixx Entertainment. They did a translation
of Graduation for the PC and currently are doing the Manga
Translations of Sailor Moon and Magic Knight Rayearth. The only thing
is if SOA will let them do it.

Marc Chiesa (Sat Nov 22 01:56:03 EST 1997) [13.oakland-01.ca.dial-access.att.net]

If any game ever deserved to be translated, this is the one. No game
in all the world grabbed me like this one. I suppose all hope is lost
for such a great game coming to the US, but for some reason I just
can't let it go. I just wish SOMEBODY would take on this project. It
would be a license to print money IMO, as anime awareness in the
States has probably increased 10 fold in just the last year.

Yumi Satomi (Sun Nov 23 05:30:28 EST 1997) [marine.imag.net]

I also think Sakura Taisen in a great game similiar to Tokimeki, or
Langrisa. I understand Sega reason for bailing out on US Sega.
Unfortunally North Amercian games are not supported by any media.
There more games out in Japan games because just about any popular
show have a game ie Escaflowne. Games like Sakura Taisen do contain
many Japanese customs and hoildays with not many people in North
American know or understand. The BIG companies do not feel that they
will make a big profit in U.S. so the chances of the game coming to
North Amercian is slim. I will probably suggest people to go learn
Japanese. This is a very comprensive web page. I wish there are more
web page like this supporting Anime related games.

What can I say?
American gamers need this. period.

What can I say. Even though I've never played or seen the game in
person (or even own a Saturn), just browsing Ming's pages on SW made
me realize just how phenomenal this game is. It seems to have that
charming, nostalgic anime quality that endears one to the
characters. If I ever get the chance to play this game, I definitely
will. And I'm eagerly awaiting the OVAs. Hey Sakura, we American
fans love you too!

I strongly support your idea of porting 'Sakura Taisen into U.S. It is
because I feel that a excellent game like Sakura Taisen Should be made
enjoyable to everyone else. Continue with the campaign, you have
definitely got my full support

Thanks.

*Sakura Taisen is a good mixture of romance, humour and war-tactics
but is not likely to sell well in America which is very wary about
Japanese imports AND political correctness. Many (not all) Americans
can't put away values for a while and simply enjoy a show (such as
Sailormoon and other anime)especially the foreign ones---they are sooo
sensitive about sexism, etc.

*If Sakura Taisen is converted for the American market, it would have
to cut a lot of content: Oogami San dating with Alice, dialogues
implying Japanese Imperialism, chauvinistic behaviour like, gamer
could scroll and view female characters'chest, story lines like
peeking girls in the shower, etc. I think the game content will get
slashed into pieces by critics that we won't recognize the game
anymore...

*Many of us (Japanese games/anime fans) do wish U.S. to be more open
to Japanese products so that we won't have to always import stuff. But
it looks like it's still a LONG way to go before U.S. would start to
appreciate Japanese style/culture. Of course, there has to be a
starting point. But which Japanese company is willing to be the risky
pioneer? Saturn is already struggling with Playstation in the market,
so obviously it won't sell anything risky.

*Sorry folks, reality bites. I feel bad too.

Suphasit (Wed Dec 3 11:51:09 EST 1997) [ws159.library.msstate.edu]

Bring it on!!!!! damnit!

fatronin (Wed Dec 3 13:03:36 EST 1997) [sms1-6.unh.edu]

How about some companies (Mixx, Sakura soft, etc.) make a subtitied
for PC or Saturn and sell the game in anime/manga/Japanese toy shops
first for testing the market? If they sell well that will turn some
head... Selling them in conjunction with the upcoming anime (other
companies/someone else's idea) would help. I think the current
dubbing capabilities in the US is not good enough to do this game
justice yet... Also, the game can be sold in other regions eg.Europe,
Southeast Asia, Australia, South America. This can apply to games
like Tokimemo, Doukyusei, Langrisser, etc.

Rhys Ng (Sun Dec 7 02:14:09 EST 1997) [klg-59-136.tm.net.my]

I'm no Japanese but I love to understand all the dialogue in the
Sakura War. No point buying Japanese Version when you can't understand
what the game is all about.

Lancealot (Sun Dec 7 20:12:49 EST 1997) [lagrange.ntsv2.usrtc64.esn.net]

I'm an animator here in the USA and i was hoping to have this games
brought here. My friend who worked on it wanted me to play and see
he's work. If you need any kind of support just ask me and I'll see
what I can do. If it has to go with subtitle then let it be done
because my japanese really sucks now.

Tony Figueroa (Wed Dec 10 02:24:59 EST 1997) [134.53.212.40]

Translate it, and I'll buy it! Of course, I'm a fan of the Japanese seiyuu.

Karuna Murdaya (Sat Dec 13 07:17:20 EST 1997) [ww-tr01.proxy.aol.com]

I just finished Sakura Taisen and loved everyminute of it. It would
be nice if SOA ported it but, seeing how SOA has done a pretty
pathetic job of Saturn software support for the past 2 years, it also
ain't bloody likely. Too bad.

Lionel (Sun Dec 14 09:00:40 EST 1997) [istk-port1320.jps.net]

I think an English version would be quite an event. I say this
because too many games out there are "too Japanese" for our
market. So we American gamers miss out on a lot. But at the same
time, I wouldn't want to see a voice-dubbed version. And since it's
extremely improbable that we'll get a subbed Sakura Taisen, I guess it
implies that I wouldn't want it in English. Sure I'd like to
understand the game, but taking out Yokoyama Chisa, Orikasa Ai, and
the rest of the cast, just removes the seiyuu/cultural aspects of
it.
I already missed out on the Japanese Rayearth and am fearful of
how Working Designs' voice overs are. No matter how good WD is, they
can never replace hearing Hikaru, Umi and Fuu's original voices.

The only reason why Sega Saturn is still living today is a huge list
of excelent RPG Games (most of them from Working Designs).

Let me tell you want thing: most of we, videogamers, donエt pay for
a console, we pay for a game (ask thousands of videogamers who got a
playstation to play ff7). If a game is excelent, a videogamer get it
no matter how!

That is why Sega must continue supporting companies like WD... please
bring Sakura Taisen to america!

I am a Japanese Sakura Wars' fan. First, I was very surprised
that there were too many fans and sites of Sakura Wars overseas. As the
English version was not, they played the Japanese version which
included even many Chinese characters by hard work and understood its
goodness. I am very glad about it as a Japanese Sakura Wars' fan. SEGA
should reply the expectations of the fans in the foreign countries. To
disregard the voice of fans cause fans to leave, such as SQUARE of
final fantasy series or MASAYA of langrisser series. It is important
for companies not only to make good games but to make much of fans to be
supported continuously and survive in the future, I think.
When we Japanese play foreign good games like DIABLO, it is a
hard work about English. When people overseas play Sakura Wars, it is
probably much harder. The most important and simple reason why Sakura
Wars became so popular in Japan was, it was also producer Mr. Hiroi's
intention, easy and everyone could enjoy. However, for people except
for Japanese it was not easy. I expect the production of Sakura Wars
English version which a lot of game fans can enjoy easily overseas to
SEGA and RED COMPANY though it has problems like SEIYUU.

P.S. (to Japanese reading this) Shall we try to take part in this kinds
 of actions together?

I think It would be a great idea to get Sakura Taisen in the US,
It would be as wonderful if they atleast offer a subtitled version.
I think if they even offered the game in the unmodified Japanese
version, it would be just as fun.. besides I doubt it wouldn't
take long to figure the game out..

I have Sakura Taisen for the Sega Saturn. I live in Houston, Texas

Thanks.

Hello, I come from Hong Kong. I have just bought the game
recently. Once I have played it, I love it crazily....wow, it's really
cool. And the characters are reallycute and lovely, especially Sakura
and Kohran. It's a pity that the game is not translated into
English. I have learned a bit Japanese and the text contains many
chinese characters, I can understand what the game is going on, but
not completely. So if the game is translated into English, I can
have more fun. Pals, work hard to fight for the English version. I
want to share the fun with you!

Hi. I have a Playstation instead of a Saturn, but even so, I
would also love to see Sakura Taisen in English. I'm almost positive
that this game will boost up sales in America. And I DO know a lot of
loyal Sega fans who are looking for more good games in the future. I
don't think that they shouldn't bring it to the U.S. just because it's
too Japanese. (I don't think it is. I'm very expose to a lot of
anime^_^) Even the OAV's will be coming to the U.S. so I hope that
they will release the game along with that.

Sakura Wars is an outstanding game, and I don't think that it's fair
that in Japan they have everything they want and here we don't have
nothing. It's like the Dragon Ball games, or other RPG's, I'm
surprised that they import Grandia and Shining Force 3.I think that it
's not fair to release Dural witthout using the Saturn capabilities,
and i didn't bought a Saturn for nothing, so they better start
importing good games like Sakura Wars and not the Remakes of Daytona
USA

広井王子 様 拝啓 We'd like to thank Hiroi-sama and the staff at Red and Sega for bringing this great news to Sakura Taisen fans in the west! We're sure that the English version of Sakura Taisen will be a success and we'll support it to the fullest extent. Gathering from the comments of fans, we'd like to make the following humble suggestions about the English version of Sakura Taisen: 1. Please do not alter the story of Sakura Taisen too drastically. Contrary to what was sometimes suggested, Sakura Taisen is not "too Japanese" for western gamers. In fact it is the Japanese cultural elements which makes Sakura Taisen so colorful and unique. 2. Please retain the voices of the original voice actors/actresses. Sakura without Yokoyama Chisa-san just wouldn't sound right ^_^ 3. Please retain the original names of the characters in the English version. There's no need to convert Japanese names to western names. We'd also like to encourage other fans to write about their suggestions for the English version of Sakura Taisen. Finally, we'd like to express our sincerest gratitude again to Hiroi-sama, Red, Sega, and everybody who helped to make this dream of Sakura Taisen fans worldwide a reality!! 本当本当に有り難う御座います! 敬具

This is truly one of the best games I have ever played. Its release
in the US is great, and makes hopes for its sequel coming even
brighter. Please keep the original story intact in every way and use
subtitles!

YES!!! Thank you so much for your work and efforts!!! Sakura Wars
subtitled in the U.S.!! This really brightens up the future of my

Burning Rangers that is...:)) Once again, thank you!!!!

D.Pat [email] (Wed Jan 28 21:15:48 EST 1998) [205.213.179.168]

The deploring situation for Sega US is truely of an embarrassment to
Sega. Consumer faith in the company is severly tarnished, Therefore,
truely hope Sega of Japan does something about the current US market
and seriously consider translating Sakura Taisen to English. It would
do wonders for the dying Sega console gaming scene in US.
 I also
think it is also shame to see such a great game passed off.

Example: Even Sony has Pappa the Rappa translated to English, I don't
see why Sega/Red shouldn't do it for their US audience!

Clausel [email] (Wed Jan 28 21:49:07 EST 1998) [198.138.198.13]

GIVE ME SAKURA!!!!!!!!!

Akosasih [email] (Thu Jan 29 03:07:55 EST 1998) [206.170.69.136]

Praise the Lord! Sakura Wars is coming to the USA, subtitled no less!
This is a great accomplishment, as the Saturn's sales are less than
steller here. This represents Sega's goodwill toward its hardcore fans
and shows they care. Congratualations, Ming, on all your hard work to
make a dream come true. Hopefully all the rumors of an english
translation will become reality, and we can all enjoy a true
masterpiece. I will first to nab a copy when it comes.

Now that Working Designs has become a playstation turncoat, what other
company is there to translate great RPGs or drama adventure into

For the sake of the English speaking gaming audience, please translate

gameplayers around the world!!!!

I am really wanting to see this game come to the U.S.!!! Even if it
already says it's coming try to count me in on this - I have already
bought the SEGA Real Model - and I don't even have the game. I cannot
read a word of Japanese, so it hurts to think that I will never get to
play games like this. PLEASE do not back out on bringing it over to
us.

Khris "The KiD" [email] (Fri Feb 6 13:36:11 EST 1998) [207.112.205.200]

Well, I own the Japanese version of Sakura Wars and I love every bit
of it. But, since my Japanese is VERY limited, I am having a tough
time going through it. FAQs are useful, but I rather go though a game
on my own without the use of a walkthrough. So, I would do anything to
assist in seeing an US version of "Sakura Taisen" (Sakura Wars). I
don't understand why Sega can't pick up the rights and bring it
over. They KNOW alot of people want it. And PSX is really beating Sega
in sales. Sakura Wars could cause a huge leap in the sales (but not
nearly as much as Final Fantasy 7). Oh well...

--Khris

PS- If anyone needs help with the game, feel free to ask.

I really REALLY hope this'll be translated into English. Sure, it may
be "too Japanese" but this doesn't really matter. Take the old
"Mystical Ninja" game on the Super Nes for example. It had TONS of
Japanese stuff and showed a great deal of Japanese culture, but it
became a sleeper hit!!! I don't have a Sega Saturn but I'll BUY one
just for this game!!! That's how bad I want it!!!

PLEASE bring Sakura Taisen to the US! Just please don't change
anything in it at all!!!!! I love my import version and would be so
sad if anything was changed in the translation!!!

i would love to see this series ported to the U.S.! it looks very
interesting, and i would definatly spend my money on sakura taisen
merchandise!

Jeffrey Punyasavatsut [email] (Sun Feb 15 02:47:12 EST 1998) [206.170.69.25]

I would buy Sakura Wars (U.S. Version) if they make one, only if they
subtitle it. ^_^

Sega should bring more games like this if they want their Saturn to
survive in the U.S.

Sakura [email] (Thu Feb 19 23:26:18 EST 1998) [204.62.108.190]

it would be pretty nice to see sakura taisen come to the us...
i've already beaten the game and seen all the endings...
maybe it would become just as popular over here...

Shaun S. aka smog [email] (Sat Feb 21 01:37:27 EST 1998) [206.175.97.128]

I think it would be great to have Sakura wars in english. I own it in
japanese and i love it, though its kinda hard to understand the game
with only the knowlege of hiragana. I think that Soa and or sega
period should start translating more japanese game. I have played many
japanese games, but I still dont see what you mean by being to
japanese. Unless it has something to do with all those mothers
blabbing about how bad a game is or something. <-- drives me
insane. People shouldnt criticise a game because it has something that
they dont like in it, but back to the point i believe sakura wars
would be a great attribute to the saturn game collection. SoA needs
some more variety in their games, and in my opinion more japanese
influence. There are so many good game that dont get ported over to
use us, err translated to english ^^, you just gotta translate sakura
wars!

Hello, I have seen Sakura Taisen in the Japanese anime magazines.
If it does arrive in the U.S, I would support it. I also would
like to know if anyone has fansubtitled Sakura Taisen.

Hmmm, I would really like to see Sakura in english sub, but sega's
intent to edit some of the stories is really bad idea.

You have a very cool page, in fact too awesome.
I've never seen a homepage this devoted to anything.
good work! :)

I recently became a fan of Japanese anime, and I have a Sega Saturn. I
am frustrated that so many good looking Japanese games don't make it
to America. This game in particular is one that I would really like to
see on the shelves over here. I would buy it as soon as it came out.

Thomas D. Mc Nulty [email] (Tue Mar 17 13:24:54 EST 1998) [209.100.89.105]

I really do think that this game would be wonderful to port over!
too bad , as far as I know, all 3rd party games are as of now
officially cancelled for the Saturn. But anyways, I mean I know I'm
not the only person in the US that has games like Quiz Nanairo Dreams
and Princess Crown so I think It'd make some money. Bring it on,
please!

Sega Of US MUST bring this game here !!! I love every bit of
it(the voices, animations, stories...)
But don't put it into english dubbing, that would ruin the
whole thing. Just change the text into english(subtitle)
Btw, anybody know when is Sakura Taisen 2's gonna come out?

Lots of people would love to get Sakura taisen in the U.S, however it
is far too japanese-spirited (too tokimemo in fact) to be a real hit
even though it would deserve it. But one week from the sequel release,
it is still justified to ask why the game has not been released in the
U.S yet.

I found your page while I was looking for java applets to see if I
have Netscape configure properly on Linux, and WOW I'm impressed!

It is a beatifully done site, and makes me eager to get busy making my
own. I don't know what your game is about, but it looks very
interesting. You might have a brief description of the game ready for
people who have never heard of it.

Regardless, I have enjoyed your site very much, and will show it to my
girlfriend who is Japanese. I also had the pleasure of visiting your
country, which I enjoyed very much. Japan is probably the most
Civilized country in the world and I can't wait to go back.

actors or anything just sub it!). You know how popular RPGs are
gettin to be since ff7 WAKE UP! Youll make lots of $ Please dont

Sakura Fan [email] (Fri Apr 17 13:53:33 EDT 1998) [206.161.52.219]

Personally, I would be thrilled if Sakura Taisen English Edition was
released into the US. Unfortunately, I dare not say that all Americans
who own a Saturn would share my feelings. 'Sakura Taisen' is a game
based not only on strategic combat between robots, but it also follows
a variable storyline of romance (and history). Many parts of the game
contain ideas or activities from the Japanese culture. While it may
appeal to the East Asian society, I fail to imagine how the Americans
would react. Their culture is so much different, their ideals. I fear
that although Sakura Taisen may satisfy some willing fans, the overall
reaction in the US would be minute when compared with its impact in
Japan and other East Asian countries. It would be understandable if
the American youth can not appreciate 'Sakura Taisen'. Some of the
ideas and actions of the game may prove to be too 'exotic' for their
liking

Vera Sacchetti [email] (Fri Apr 17 21:12:49 EDT 1998) [194.65.247.180]

I think that, although I live in Portugal, I'd like to see Sakura
Taisen translated into English, but only the text. I absolutely love
the original CV's and I think they should be preserved.
I also think that the game should be distributed worlwide (I want to
have a copy myself! ^_^;)
I believe that there are no reasons not to translate the game since it
is proven to be a major success in Japan and I believe it has all the
ingredients to be a big success worldwide. So, if anyone big reds
this, please bear in mind the suggestion of translating the game into
English.

Jon Stern [email] (Tue Apr 21 06:02:10 EDT 1998) [204.60.201.86]

Sakura Taisen in the U.S.? Hmm... seems like a hell of a difficult
prospect. Sega's prominence in the U.S. - as far as the Saturn is
concerned - is severely dwindling. I purchased a Sega Saturn late
(relatively speaking) and only recently Sakura Taisen (which, I must
add, is the singlemost enjoyable form of entertainment I have been
blessed with the opportunity to experience). The only information I
had regarding the soft prior to purchase was comprised of a few
familiar staff names such as the truly gifted Fujishima Kousuke and
the lovely Yokoyama Chisa-san, whose vocal talents are internationally
renowned. Needless to say, I fell instantly in love with the game and
am hopeful for a release of the OVA series in the U.S.

I have been working on a translation faq of the game and I can safely
assure you that such a task as translation, while monumental, is not
insurmountable; indeed, if undertaken seriously, it can be an
altogether rewarding and satisfying experience. I strongly agree with
Michael Ng on the point of a text-only translation. The original
spoken dialogue was performed by professionals who are famous in the
Japanese animation industry and possess the facility for perfect,
heartfelt, emotional, and frequently impassioned voice acting that I
have yet to witness an American voice actor in animation - especially
Japanese animation - successfully (re?)produce. American voice acting
would simply diminish the quality of the game, financial frivolities
aside.

As for the issue of platform - need it be mentioned? Kam Taing
insists that if Sakura Taisen were so good, it should have been
released for the PSX since the Saturn "sux." To this I can only argue
that the Playstation has had more than its fair share of hugely
successful games. Moreover, porting the game from the SS to the PSX
would seem to be a costly maneuver not worth the effort to undertake
(although one may argue just as easily this point against translation
- ah well, you can't win them all) even if Sega did not own the
distribution rights, and, as I understand it, the Red Company -
although I may be mistaken - appears to be partial to the Saturn's
hardware (or so I gathered from the 'Tengai Makyou Dai-Yon no
MokuShiRoku the Apocalypse IV' instruction manual). Thus I believe
Sakura Taisen should remain a Saturn soft.

At any rate, while translating the game and releasing it in the
U.S. would be a spectacular thing, opening it up to a nation in which
Japanese culture and entertainment are rapidly expanding, it does not
appear likely at this point. Sega U.S. does not appear to be doing
well - in all honesty, I haven't seen any console game released in the
U.S. recently truly appealing to me. Perhaps if the translation job
were undertaken by a group of die-hard Sakura Taisen fanatics such as
myself - and from this page it is evident that such people abound in
great number - costs could be reduced as the operation would be run by
true lovers of Sakura Taisen as opposed to money-grubbing capitalists
(which is not to imply that all companies are so)...

Well, I'd best dismount my soapbox, as time is running short - as to
whether this dilemma will be settled to any fan's satisfaction is yet
to be determined. Sakura Taisen is truly one of those games that
comes only so often - then again, the sequel's just been released, so
what do I know?

Thanks for your time.

I would love to see Japanese games coming to the U.S. As a loyal Sega
fan I purchased the Sega Saturn and now it is becoming increasingly
difficult to find any worthwile games for the system. I feel very let
down. If they could export this game with some text conversion so
that we Westerners could participate, I would certainly purchase the
game.

I have not had a chance to play ST or ST2, but I know I'll like them
when I do get the chance. So please, please, please just get the
English versions going ASAP.

Plus, just keep the storylines the way they were. The background for
ST reminds me of classic shoujo manga, with a twist of course. I'm not
too sure of ST's prospect where "normal" American gamers are
concerned, but there should be a market for ST (and other Anime-based
games) among the otaku communities here. It might also be a good idea
to translate (or better, subtitle) games taken from Anime series,
since they are abundant in the Saturn platform. I remember purchasing
the Macross: DYRL shooter just for the sake of it and getting my brain
twisted royally since I didn't understand a word being said in
briefings (ARE they briefings??).

Oh, if I remember correctly, there's an Evangelion game for the
Saturn, right? That would be another candidate for translation, since
EVA is getting quite a following here. My suggestion is: Subtitle
Sakura Taisen to get marketing research data, then get the others
in.

Anime enthusiasts should become compelled to try out the Saturn port
when Anime games start showing up. Might even allow Saturn to get a
bigger market share by specializing on Anime games.

Hello,Ming.
How do you think about sakura's position at "world chart foundation".

At "Top 100 details" page,
http://www.worldcharts.com/vindex-full.html
sakura got second positon but the point is as same as No.1's!!

As below page shows, the positon depends upon the points.
http://www.worldcharts.com/_details.html
################################################
The number behind points shows you the
end result after all the algorithms have
done their jobs. The points are calculated
from votes, using all kinds of weights and
factors. The titles in the list are sorted by
the number of points in this column. These
points enable you to see how much apart
two titles in the list really are.
################################################
But Sakura is...Why ???
What's the difference bitween No.1 and No.2 !?

I have checked the points of "Video Games Top 100" for many months.
(I have been voting for sakura 1&2 for every week as well.)
Sometime I found a case that sakura got the same point as FF7's.

I am not fluent in English. (I am Japanese)
So, I may be misread the details about chart system. But...(^o^:)

p.s.
I think Sakura should be released in U.S.(and other English-speaking
nation) I want everyone all over the world to play this good game
with their own language.
Because Sakura is the best game I have ever played.

Hello Hiroyuki-san! Please read here for the real reason why Sakura Taisen never made it to top chart position.

still coming? I'm very concerned about this!

M. Wagner [email] (Tue Jun 9 01:21:42 EDT 1998) [206.166.222.70]

I'd like to see Sakura Taisen in the U.S. myself. Subtitling sounds
good to me. I really hate dubbing in anime tapes, I really don't want
to hear it in a game. They shouldn't change the storyline when brining
it to the U.S. or U.K. or Canada or anywhere for that matter. They
need to realize that fans of anime are also fascinated(or at least
interested) with japanese culture. Changing the game in any way except
for the text would just make us feel like japanese companies think
we're freaks or something because they think we can't understand other
cultures.

Nils Harder [email] (Wed Jun 10 19:13:15 EDT 1998) [193.158.136.166]

Greeting to all fellow ST fans! When I read that Sakura Taisen and
Hanagumi Taisen Columns were going to be released in English
(preliminary, not confirmed, but awesome news nonetheless!), I nearly
fell over. My understanding of the Japanese language is on the sparse
side, so the thought of understanding everything in the game, while
still having the voices in their original Japanese form (I mean
really, would we have accepted it any other way? ^_^) just sounds too
good to be true. If this rumor turns out to be true, that will be the
happiest day ever... Sega/Red: give it to us the same way you did with
Panzer Dragoon Saga -- don't touch the voice and subtitle everything.
You can do it! Just make sure you release more than 6,000 of
them. ~_^ And while you're at it, bring out Sakura Taisen 2 as well.
Let the Saturn go out with a bang in the U.S.! Let those people who
think this is just a 'date sim' or a 'violent wargame' lose out. -WE-
know where it's at! Sakura Taisen is definitely the greatest series
on the Saturn, and let's hope that we see part 3 on the Sega
DREAMCAST!

Hey such a great game like Sakura Wars should have been ported and
released with Japanese version together! Why Sega/Red hesitated?

BTW... if they are going to make it another arcade game like Virtual
On I will GREATLY apprecaite it!! ^_^

(A SUPER Iris fan!)

An American anime lover disillusioned by translators [email] (Sat Jun 20 13:25:50 EDT 1998) [204.60.23.21]

Learn Japanese.

Seriously.

Sakura Taisen and Sakura Taisen 2 would lose so much in translation.

Akira of Singapore(NOT a Japanese) [email] (Sun Jun 21 00:41:51 EDT 1998) [203.120.90.48]

I bought Sakura Wars 2 when it was released and I must say that it is
one of the best games ever! I do not understand japanese but it didn't
really bother me(though I hoped that there would be an option to
change the language into English or Chinese). Anyway, I think bringing
the game to the US would be a great idea, but PLEASE DO NOT I REPEAT
DO NOT LET IT BE DUBBED! The game would be spoilt (I cannot imagine
Sakura or Sumire speaking English). Subtitles would be great. If Sega
of America wants to make Playstation owners regret not buying the
Saturn, this is the game to import. Let's hope there would be Sakura
Wars 3 for the Saturn and Dreamcast.

Anh Vu Duy [email] (Mon Jun 22 02:34:26 EDT 1998) [193.48.246.2]

It would be great to have it in France, or at least in the US.

OHGAMI ICHIRO [email] (Wed Jun 24 23:11:34 EDT 1998) [209.20.1.112]

The idea of bring the game to the English market is great, but the one
thing has to remember is to only change the text. NEVER EVER EVER
EVER translate the voice into English because it will sound very
stupid.

SAKURA WAR and SAKURA WAR 2 are both the best games on
this planet, and I am hoping that RED and SEGA will make the third
one. (^-^)

I LOVE SAKURA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Andrew Tran [email] (Thu Jun 25 20:47:15 EDT 1998) [168.191.232.165]

Man, I'm hella interested in Sakura Wars but never played gosh darn
it! Please have Sakura Taisen ported to the U.S.! Who cares if it's
dubbed (even tho I hate to say it)! Give RPGers in the US a chance to
play it and get a chance to know what the word "whup ass" and "fun"
means dammit!

A Saddened Gamer [email] (Sun Jul 5 02:15:47 EDT 1998) [153.36.143.220]

Hey, I jst read on Classic Gaming's front page that Sega
 is not
going to support the Saturn anymore! Anybody know if this is true?
This is probably a very stupid question but would it affect the
possible release of Sakura Taisen in the states?

John Shivers (Faust) [email] (Mon Jul 13 00:45:11 EDT 1998) [208.210.247.39]

I read though only about the first 30 posts or so, so
I dont know if anyone has said this yet, but why
are there people saying that the U.S. would not
understand the game's cultural value? Thats just stupid!
In the U.S. some of the best selling books, and movies,
and even some games feature completly *alien* cultures
that everyone picks up on just fine! Not to mention the
fact anime has become so popular in english countries
that even if the U.S. version were to be released and
only fans of anime(for the sake of arguement) would understand
the cultural value then it would still earn huge profits.
Anyone that reads any video game magazines knows that
this game would get near perfect scores, thus raising
its selling value even more!

I'm french, so I don't speak english very well. Forgive me for the
mistakes. I'm fond of sakura wars 1 and 2. I can't read japanese
therefor understand the dialogues is very difficult for me but also
for much french people. I really would like to see Sakura Taisen
ported to the U.S because we could understand the humorist tone of the
dialogues.

so i can get some of those awesome games they show in Animedia . . . )

I love the idea of a subtitled Sakura Wars game for North American
gamers! Please don't alter the story on account that it may be "Too
Japanese". The intelligence and cultural awareness of many North
Americans has grown, really. We need to expand the diversity of games
in the U.S.and Sakura Taisen is the game to do it! There is no other
game like it in America! Such a new and interesting game should make
good sales to an eagerly awaitng crowd. Please bring Sakura Taisen to
America, in English(Subtitled) but not watered down.

I think that they should release the game as soon as possible. I've
read a lot about Sakura Taisen, and it seems like a very interesting,
and worthwhile game. Personally, since I'm utterly broke, and therefor
cannot buy a Sega Saturn (heh, heh, -_-;), I would also like to see
the English version come out for PC or something of that sort. Anyway,
Ming, keep up the good work on this page, because it adds awareness to
things like this! Ja matta ne!

to have the dubbed version of Sakura Wars reach America! All the
other RPG games do so very well, i think Sakura Wars would do just as
well! I can't speak Japanese so it would be hard for me to play the
game.

sakura Wars 3 will launch to Dreamcast seems to be unfair to saturn
owners do you agree?

niki wonoyo [email] (Tue Oct 27 13:50:41 EST 1998) [207.151.69.93]

Actually, I would like to state about the most valuable speech
(perhaps most romantic game) i've ever seen. I almost get "their"
feelings when I heard the music (wow, it's the best music soundtrack
I've ever heard once again, not exagerrating, though!!)

So basically, I beg on my knee for Sega to quickly release the
English sub of this game (not the dub). Then, I can enjoy the story
line and also the game..........which maybe will make me crying at
 the sad episode.......snif.

niki wonoto [email] (Tue Oct 27 14:13:41 EST 1998) [207.151.69.93]

Just to summarize from both of japanese and non-japanese's animation
lovers....all of you are NO DOUBT TRUE!!!!
 I've come from
Indonesia. Perhaps all of you think that Sakura Taisen is just
popular in U.S and Europe, and other well-known country. But notice,
......I myself from Indonesia who know anything about anime or
anime-related games, from now on get very agitated and almost
addicted with anime, also Sakura Taisen!!!
 So here's my point....if
Sakura Taisen is just so popular in JAPANESE VERSION, don't Sega
think that if they release the English sub (but I compeletly disagree
with English dub, since it will break the natural's beatiful
tradition of Japanese!!), they will become MORE SUCCESFUL, no matter
how much it will cost to translate this game??

Let's think about all the Sakura taisen's fans....they're growing,
growing and growing every year, and though, anime becomes more
popular thorought the world.....even in Indonesia!!

Hey, guys in this page....just make me sure that my words are true
and all of you agree (you can bet it!).

So, I beg on my knee from now, for Sega to release the Sakura
Taisen's English sub very early within 1998-1999(if possible).

SOON, most of the world's community, will raise their hands to this
Japanese' most valuable section and culture.......'cuz it's the fact!

I agree for Sega to release the ST's English sub to be released.
AND HOW ABOUT YOU, GUYS....DO YOU AGREE WITH ME???

In my long experience as a gamer, and more specifically, a Segaphile,
and even more importantly, an anime fan, I have never known a greater
travesty to the video game market than Sega's failure to release
Sakura Taisen in America, or Britan, or any English speaking
country. Sakura Taisen is easily one of the greatest games ever made,
and even though I speak not aword of Japanese, I fell in love
immediately. If it can have this kind of draw on the Japanese and a
select few Americsns, imagine the impact a true release would
have. This is absolutely necessary.

Sakura Wars in the U.S.? And how many years has it last been since
you heard from RED, even indirectly, off the record, or otherwise, on
this subject? It doesn't seem too bloody likely, now, does it? And
since Sakura Taisen 3 is supposedly in the works, do you think RED is
willing to spend any time to work on translating a game they did three
years ago? I don't mean to burst your bubble or anything, and I love
Sakura Taisen, but I think it's about time you faced the facts.

Michael Goon [email] (Thu Feb 11 01:28:22 EST 1999) [209.52.111.144]

Sakura Taisen in the U.S, I think it's a GREAT idea. It's the one
game I've been dying to play for a long time. I own a playstation,
tho I'm planning on getting a Saturn soon, since the price has gone
down. Hell THIS game is the reason I wanted to get a Saturn
originally :) If I can play an english version so I don't have to
struggle over the Japanese so much the better.

On a side note, if Sega did release this in the States, I'd really
like just a translation of the text (ie a subtitled anime). No
offense to you people who like English dubs of animes, but frankly I
can't stand them. I also really hated what happened to the dubbing
in the Square game Xenogears. Bad godzilla movie dub :p Subtitled
translations of anime games, or games where speech is important
  anyone? :)

Bobby Yu [email] (Fri Feb 12 20:29:03 EST 1999) [152.163.204.177]

Damn! I hope they bring the Sakura Taisen games to the US!!!!

How could anyone not like Sakura Taisen!!!????? To us loyal RPG
players it's only right to bring this game to the states. Why cant
Sega wake up and smell the damn coffee!!!?? It's bad enough they
arent making anymore games for the Saturn(yes I am one of the few who
have a Saturn...)!!!!

Nicky M [email] (Sat Feb 27 15:55:33 EST 1999) [141.214.27.30]

Sakura Taisen (and it's sequels) is by far the BEST game ever to be
made! At such a late date, I was sure that I knew about everything out
there in the gaming world. I was a die-hard Playstation-ONLY girl
UNTIL--!! SAKURA TAISEN!!! It changed EVERYTHING! I am hardly
satisfied with other video games after seeing it and when I heard that
Sakura Taisen would be released in English, I am now saving up to buy
a Sega Saturn JUST to play this ONE (and hopefully the sequels)
GAME!!! I'm absolutely serious! We MUST have it in the USA! We're the
second top gaming country in the world-- we DESERVE it!!!

Skatt [email] (Sun Mar 7 00:10:52 EST 1999) [205.188.199.33]

Saturn is gone now thanks to corporate scum Sony.. the most evil
company on the face of the planet.. but Sakura wars could still be
"remixed" for Dreamcast.. kind of like Lunar SHOULD HAVE BEEN until
SONY THE CORPORATE SCUM BOUGHT THEM TOO.. bring Sakura Wars 1 and 2
remix to Dreamcast.

Late

--Skatt

Dan B. [email] (Wed Mar 10 00:59:32 EST 1999) [130.111.151.69]

Calm down, folks. I'd hardly say Sony bought out Lunar. Being that
Saturn was already dead (whatever the reasoning is aside), Working
Designs can hardly be blamed for releasing it for a system that will
get the game some profit. After all, they're a company like all the
rest, here to make money. They didn't have much of a choice.

As for Sakura Taisen, we all know Sega had long ago abandoned the
Saturn. Any hope for another release, let alone now in this post-MKR
age, is nil. I find it safe to say the original post from Ouji Hiroi
was a hoax. A fairly cruel one, that we all believed because we wanted
to. Why else would it drag out this long?

But we can still try to petition for a Dreamcast release, and hope
something could come of that. Heck - I can dream too, can't I?

I'm from France and I'd love to play this game, I've heard so much
about it! I'm not dreaming to see the game coming in France but If it
can come in the U.S that would be Cool! The fact that the game is in
japanese make it impossible to play for us.

              Thanks for hearing me.

Please bring Sakura Taisen here! I and a lot of my friends are big BIG HUGE fans of Fujishima-sensei and all his works. Sakura Taisen is such a great series and bringing the games over to the U.S. would make me go out and buy a Saturn (and/or Dream Cast).

I think Sakura Wars should be in U.S. I want to play it someday. I really like Sakura Wars. It seems real fun and exciting the way you described it. I think that there is absolutely no reason why Sakura Wars is not in the U.S except for the violence part if there is any and it could be rated R.

I just got the OVA from ADV(subtitled of course), and it's amazing. They had better bring at least one Sakura Taisen game to the states, esp. if they release Sakura Taisen3 on the Dreamcast. :)

i am a fan of Sakura Wars and think it should get sent to the U.S. just subtitle it and everyone will be happy... or at least put it on the Dreamcast.... Sega should really put this great game in the U.S. either on Saturn or Dreamcast.... i don't really care as i could just go out and buy and Dreamcast and Sakura Wars if it comes out.... Sega better put this game on the Saturn because it is a good system and should not be discontinued due to no more games coming out to the U.S. i pray every day that Sega would announce that they are going to release it in the Saturn for the U.S.

I looked at your site and think that this game should be translated but only the text. Also subtitle the animated movies in the game the way I heard that Panzer Dragoon Saga was. That way you don't have to mess with the voices and you can hear the original Japanese voice. Then us people who don't speak or read Japanese can understand what is going on and still get the feel of the story through the original Japanese voice actors.

Gee, would I like to see Sakura Taisen in the US? There's a real no-brainer. Of course I would! Unfortunately, it's unlikely that either ST 1 or 2 will ever be ported over here, given their age, and the fact that the Saturn is, well, dead. But maybe Sakura Taisen 3 will come out in the US. I doubt it though. :( I guess I should just learn Japanese so that I can fully understand the games without anybody translating them.

And one thing to Sega: if you do translate ST3, DON'T DUB IT! We've already seen how pathetic Sega's dubs are; Shining Force 3 had quite possibly the worst dub in the history of bad dubs. I think they used their janitors for the voice acting in that one.

Now I know why the Saturn was so much more popular in Japan. Conversely, you can understand why it failed over here. Most of the really great games on the Playstation in Japan are released over here, but Sega denied us a lot of cool games over here. Many of them were because they were so characteristically Japanese that they decided to not to translate them. I think they underestimated the purchasing power of the American otaku.

Playstation really killed it when Final Fantasy 7 came out. While I was in Japan last summer, Sega was in second place. N64 junk was off to the side. A typical Famicom shop would have Playstation and Saturn selections of equal sizes, with N64 being about half of Saturn's selection. I've noticed recently that there's been a lot of games which were originally for the Saturn are now being converted to the Playstation. Interestingly, Playstation is having no hesitancies in releasing them here domestically.

Dreamcast will offer Sega a way to correct the mistakes with Saturn. If they release more of the great games that are released in Japan, they'll make more customers this side of the ocean happier. With the talk of making a Saturn emulator available for the Dreamcast, it might be profitable to release a modified version of the original games here. Preferrably by only changing the text. Many fighting games leave the original Japanese voices in tact, so it's reasonable for the creators of adventure games to do the same. I've seen the dub of the Sakura Wars anime, and of course it stank. But with the release of the anime here, there's a good chance that we'll see at least the upcoming third game available here.

Mike Lindberg [email] (Tue Jun 8 22:58:38 EDT 1999) [216.192.143.14]

It seems that whenever a game that is off-beat is released in Japan, the people in the US never get a chance to see it. Sakura Taisen is such a game. It probably will never be casually considered for release due to its extremely niche-type game play. But if the game is off-beat, does it mean it won't sell well?

No. Parappa the Rapper, a definetly different game, enjoyed moderate success in the US. Why is one company willing to publish new genres while others are stubborn and unwilling?

Personally, I have never played Sakura Taisen. My computer, however, is literally infected with it. Wallpaper, themes, various BGM, and three movies make up a generous portion of my hard drive space.

Hopefully, Sega will get its head out of the sand and realize that there is a small community of "informed" gamers who would buy copies and tell their friends about it.

Hopefully, Sakura Taisen 3 will make it over. I certainly don't want it going the way of "failures" due to its uniqueness.

Oh, and if it is released, subtitles are the ONLY way to go. And hey, if the game isn't that much of a success (it will be, though), subtitling won't cost Sega much. Oh well.

Sakura Taisen should have been brought to the U.S.; It's a great game and should be spread to the whole world! but I agree with Michael Ng that perhaps the ported games should just have the text translated. I have the U.S. Rayearth game and all the vocal dialog at the start makes me cringe when I hear it (and Working Designs is supposed to be a good company)! Working through the Japanese does sort of add another layer of fun though!

Ben Gross [email] (Mon Jun 14 22:11:58 EDT 1999) [208.252.60.119]

hello,
-->I think bringing Sakura Wars to the U.S. would be a great thing. I have many friends who also like Sakura wars and they belong to many clubs. The only way I get games are threw my friends in China who send them to me. But I know not everyone has that kind of option like I do. That is why I think it is a very good idea to bring them to the U.S. These games are popular in China and I think they need a chance to grow in the U.S. to...

What an awsome game the first one is turning out to be! I only wish that Sega of America would wake up and smell the RPG's! Let's hope they give us the 3rd one for the Dreamcast!

John Le [email] (Wed Jul 14 02:27:12 EDT 1999) [165.236.189.200]

I was never able to play sakura wars on the saturn because i was always short on the dough to go import it. From what I've seen of it on this page, this game looks and sounds too damn cool to be passed up in the US. Just translating the subtitles in english shouldn't take much time at all. And with rumors of Sakura Wars 3 coming to the Dreamcast soon, this series CAN'T be passed up in the USofA or anywhere else, it would be a damn shame to every game/rpg/anime fan.

Kintaro Oda [email] (Sat Jul 24 06:26:00 EDT 1999) [63.10.191.224]

I am Kintaro a 14 year old freshmen at Millilani High. I live in Hawaii. Everyone has a story. It all began about a year ago maybe more but I was browsing in "Toys & Joys" our friendly neighborhood anime supply depot. When I came across a interesting wall scroll of a rather attractive girl in a kimono. I asked the clerk who the sword toting young lady was and he said "Tenchi's mother?". I decided to purchase the wall scroll just for the hell of it. Anyway fast foward to March I think it was when I saw my little cherry blossom on the cover of the newly released Sakura Wars. I say to my self now Kin-chan ol boy this seems like a rather good anime, but given the past performance of A.D.vision (and my present finacial state I decided to hold off. June came around and I got my new computer with a DVD drive and I began perchasing anime DVD. I went to Anime Nation (www.animenation.com) on the internet and browsed through thier DVDs and then "Sakura Wars DVD -comming soon". I figured for an anime to be made a DVD it had to be in the elite, so I scoured the web for this "Sakura Wars/Taisen" from site to site learning of the game and its releast on tape etc, then I came to your site its indepth plot explanations and character pages got me excited then the the video clips sent me to the video store where I bought Sakura Wars Subtitled and was blown away. I was ready to dust off the old saturn and go looking for the import of the game but never found it. Maybe since the Saturn is no longer with us our friends at sony could take over the first two while we wait for the the third on the Dream Cast.
Id think with all the fan support sombody would help the poor Americans. Well thats my story and my position.

Sakura Taisen is an awesome character, she's funny, cute and I think I look like her out of all anime hehe. And she should definatly be ported into the US!!!! Go Sakura!!!

Sakura taisen must be a great game, and I would love to play it here in Portugal. So if you ask me this game should be translated in to English so that everybody could enjoy it like the people of that great country (JAPAN) do.
I`m trying to get some Japanese lessons so that I can play games like the peace of art that Sakura taisen is.That game should be exposed in the Louvre so that people could admire that beauty.
I also thik that games like S.T. could be an inspiration to western companyes start to really innovate their products which would make many people happy.
I like anime and why not give to the Europeans and Americans the chance to enjoy this great dream world that is anime?

It's a great game! I'd like to see the U.S. version on the Playstation or Playstation 2, because in the U.S., the Saturn is. . . dead!

Thanks!

I have not played the game, but the anime is excellent. I would play the game, but I have no Sega system. Now if it were released on the Playstation. . .

I would love it to come to the U.S. though I live in Canada. I have only seen the first show since that was all I could find, this page helped me learn about it. I want to see the other episodes very badly.

I would love to see Sakura-taisen in America!! It is an excelent game, and would do well with all anime fans and game fans alike!

Radien [email] (Wed Aug 11 20:50:07 EDT 1999) [63.14.212.98]

Dangit, why do all the good anime games have to be on Sega systems?? I wish it had been on the Playstation... I doubt it'll ever come out in America now, since it was released only on the Saturn. At least we're apparently getting the series. The rest will have to wait until I learn Japanese. :P~

This game looks like it would sell very well, if Sega decides to start the whole importing idea. I still wish that it could be sold to Sony or Nintendo though. Anyway, Sega just better hurry up with the game or else its not gonna get much support here.

DJ Nelson [email] (Fri Aug 27 02:16:03 EDT 1999) [24.113.33.12]

Well Sakura Wars is in the US, Well by video anyway, and they aren't likely to give up they're rights in the series to just show it on t.v., as promising as it might sound, so it's kinda impossible at this time, but maybe in the future. We can just hope.

Personally, I too would like Sega to bring Sakura Taisen to the US, I'd buy a Sega unit just to play them. it seems that Sega of America is under the impression that it's the hardware that matters.... that's their big mistake right there, it's not the hardware so much as the games(hardware's nice, but it's not everything), and if they finaly wised up and decided that they can get more from their Japan counter-part they would be sitting up top saying "Ha! Why didn't we do this sooner? We could've made a fortune off these American Otaku alone!" But I'm waiting for the day they figure this one out.Plus, I'm very new to the Sakura Taisen world, and it all started with a little screen saver, now I have all sorts of images and some media.

Thanks
D. Goens II

P.S.: Sega, Get your butts in gear!!!!
