Tomino's Counterattack!
Tomino Yoshiyuki, creator of AURA BATTLER
DUNBINE, IDEON, and MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM,
had sunken into relative obscurity after the somewhat lacking response to
GUNDAM F91 and VICTORY
GUNDAM. While Sunrise took the GUNDAM
franchise into several alternate universes, such as MOBILE
FIGHTER G GUNDAM,
NEW MOBILE WAR CHRONICLES GUNDAM W,
and recently NEW MOBILE CENTURY GUNDAM X,
Tomino kept a low profile, writing the story for the MOBILE SUIT
CROSS BONE GUNDAM manga (serialized in Shonen Ace).
After resurfacing with the DUNBINE
sequel GARZEY'S WING, rumor had
it that Tomino was planning to do another robot show. Could it be? In
an interview with Sunrise Radio, Tomino himself took the stage and
confirmed that yes, he was preparing to work on another show this year.
Not just any robot show, but one that would, in his words, "outdo
EVANGELION...!"
If this sounds blasphemous to the numerous
EVANGELION fans out there,
bear in mind that Anno Hideaki, director of EVANGELION, cites Tomino's
traumatic IDEON as one of his key influences. After years of
obscurity, can the creator of anime's largest mecha franchise make a
comeback?

coincide with the April release of the Sunrise/Kawamori Shouji anime. The

New Sunrise series to unite Macross Plus, Escaflowne creators
Fresh from its work on last year's THE VISION OF ESCAFLOWNE, Sunrise will

(tentatively titled COWBOY BEBOP). Set in 2022, the story revolves around
the various colonized planets in the Solar System where people have

Earth. The same experiment and the resulting phase-change gates ushered a
new Space Age, albeit one rife with crime on civilization's fringes.

supervisor Nobumoto Keiko will be working with ESCAFLOWNE mecha designer
