Mari Yokoo vYoM0 tGAL Description: tGAL The story of two mighty space empires is told from the viewpoint tGAL of two 'heroes': Rheinhardt Von Museal, Admiral of the Galactic tGAL Empire, and Yang Wenli, Admiral from the Alliance of Free tGAL Planets. Both men are military and tactical geniuses and are tGAL born survivors. The ambitious Rheinhart has the goal of getting tGAL enough power to be able to free his sister from her obligation tGAL as one of the Emperor's Court ladies. He is fairly ruthless in tGAL this which is tempered only by his aide: Siegfried Kircheis. tGAL Yang is a pacifistic man who, when necessary, will do his duty tGAL even if it means fighting against an enemy fleet (since he is a tGAL *soldier*, after all). The drama between these 2 men is played tGAL out against a backdrop of great space battles, inept commanders, tGAL frightened soldiers, personal relationships, corrupt politicians tGAL and the workings of two space empires at war with each other. tGAL This is a space opera on a very grand scale. Note that there is tGAL a very heavy Prussian influence on the series, especially tGAL present in the Imperial uniforms... tGAL Rating: [1 2 3 4 ] tGAL Title: Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (TV) gSF tGAT aka: Kagaku Ninja tai Gatchaman tGAT Cast: tGAT Oowashi no Ken ............................. Automation has taken hold in many aspects of every tGITS day life, and cyborgs aren't science-fiction any more. A great tGITS computer network encircles the globe and has rendered national tGITS borders obsolete. In this world, hackers are particularly tGITS dangerous as they can alter a person's 'ghost' (what others tGITS might call a 'soul') and create false memories remotely. After tGITS a translator to a high government official has had her ghost tGITS hacked, Major Motoko Kusanagi is assigned to find the hacker tGITS responsible...a mysterious hacker known only as 'The Puppet tGITS Master'. This will lead the cyborg on a journey where she begins tGITS to question what it means to be human. This movie is a mix of tGITS high action and introspection as it explores the impact of tGITS technology on humanity. The artwork for this movie is amazing tGITS as it depicts a bleak and sterile future. Watch for director tGITS Mamoru Oshii's trademark: beagles. tGITS NOTE: The entry is based on the dubbed version of GITS. I do not tGITS know how the original differs. The dubbing job is very well tGITS done, save for the Major herself (too deadpan in places). tGITS NOTE: Be warned. The character designs for the movie differ from tGITS those in the manga. Kusanagi isn't as cute as she used to be. tGITS US Release by: Manga Entertainment (dubbed) tGITS Rating: [1 2 3 4 5] tGITS Title: Battle Angel (OAVs) gSF tGNN aka: Gunnm tGNN aut: Yukito Kishiro (Business Jump; US: Viz Communications) tGNN Cast: tGNN Gally ......................................... Instead,tGNN we enter a city built underneath the floating city. In these tGNN slums, a cyborg engineer finds a discarded cyborg from the trash tGNN dropped from above. He rebuilds her and gives her a name: Gally.tGNN Gally awakens in a world where living conditions are poor, gangs tGNN roam the area, and "survival of the fittest" applies. Gally is tGNN apparently a child with no past...even to herself. The place is Tokyo during the tGRA Allied firebombings of the city. In a train station, a boy dies tGRA on the platform. This goes unnoticed by the attendants among tGRA the many bodies in the station. The beginning of the movie is tGRA actually the end of the story. The boy's ghost appears and tGRA apologizes to his dead sister. Through flashbacks, we are told tGRA the story of two children made orphans by the war. We follow tGRA their struggle to survive in a society that has broken down tGRA under the horrors of war...a struggle doomed to fail in the end. tGRA This movie focuses on what war does to the children, and is very tGRA realistically animated. Directed by Isao Takahata, this movie tGRA should be seen at least once. tGRA NOTE: Oddly enough, this almost suicidally depressing movie was tGRA double-billed with a Hayao Miyazaki movie during its run: tGRA "Tonari no Totoro". tGRA US Release by: US Manga Corps (subtitled) tGRA Rating: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - at least once tGRA Title: Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers (TV) gAD tGRN Cast: tGRN {Cast omitted} tGRN Description: tGRN "In 2086, 2 peaceful aliens journey to Earth, seeking our help. tGRN In return, they give us the plans for our first hyperdrive, tGRN allowing mankind to open the doors to the stars. We have tGRN assembled a team of unique individuals to protect Earth and our tGRN allies; courageous pioneers committed to the highest ideals of tGRN justice and dedicated to preserving law and order across the tGRN new frontier. tGRN tGRN These are the adventures of the Galaxy Rangers!" tGRN tGRN This series is, quite literally, a space western...with all that tGRN implies. Don't forget...a western is actually one of the most tGRN versatile of story-telling mediums. We have a group of special tGRN lawmen (and Niko :-)) whose job is to enforce the law out on the tGRN frontier. The stories range from straight adventure to comedy tGRN to character studies (e.g. Gooseman's past as a Super Trooper). tGRN To coin a phrase...these are the Galaxy Rangers: tGRN - Captain Zachary Fox - the leader of this squad. He has a tGRN personal grudge against the Queen of the Crown, but does tGRN not let it get in the way of his responsibilities. tGRN SERIES 5: A bionic arm capable of an energy blast. tGRN - Walter 'Doc' Hartman - the hacker of the group. He is a man tGRN who doesn't take much seriously, but he is very good at tGRN what he does. Computer systems are his specialty. tGRN SERIES 5: The ability to create energy programs which can tGRN invade other computer systems. tGRN - Shane Gooseman - I like to think of him as the archtypical tGRN western hero as portrayed by Clint Eastwood. He has the tGRN mannerisms, look and voice to match a 'tough guy' image. tGRN SERIES 5: The ability to metamorph into any other life- tGRN form...many who don't really exist. Gooseman tGRN is an all-in-one organic weapon. tGRN - Niko - The only female member of the group. She often falls tGRN into a support role, but has the sense to see things tGRN clearly...an ability respected by the rest of the team. tGRN SERIES 5: Niko is a psychic with demonstrated powers of tGRN clairvoyance, telekinesis and an ability to see tGRN visions of the future. tGRN tGRN NOTE: Why is this in the Anime Pocket Guide? On occasion, I'll tGRN see a posting praising it (and there's a lot to praise), THEN tGRN I'll see a question asking what anime it's based on. For the tGRN record: there is *NO* anime connection to this series. This tGRN doesn't prevent me from recommending it though... :-) tGRN Rating: [1 2 3 4 5] tGRN Title: Giant Robo (OAVs) gGR tGRO Cast: tGRO Daisaku Kusama .........................
