NOZO-KU DA-ROU ------------------------------------------------------ Notes and Comments: The original Japanese is very liberal in adding superfluous notes to work in the syllable count. As such, I've been rather liberal as well; however, I have cut syllables that span different pitches to a minimum (zero, I think). The style of this song dictates that the stress placement is much more important than the rhyme. Two examples, among many; Regarding the first syllable, the Japanese has two mora "MOU" for one quarter note. Robyn Conder suggests using "Just a" instead of "A"; I prefer the text, which has a long "A". An interesting antithesis appears at the end of the song, where the same Japanese line "nozo ku darou" is used as the beginning stanza, but there is one less note! Repeating "the next day starts to be" just didn't have the force the current last line does. Comments: "milk of your kindness" is a play on the idiom "milk of human kindness." It fits the double meaning of "ueteru" ("craving," "hunger for") and the meaning of "yasashisa" ("affection"). The "hangnail" line is because the original Japanese "saskureta" has a double meaning; "shattered," and the more literal meaning "hangnail" (which conveys the pain of the memories). A simile was the best I could do. ^_^ Note from Theresa Martin's translation regarding "ningen yametai toki sae aru kedo yamerarenai": Ito Takayuki suggests that this phrase may be taken from an anti-stimulant public service TV commercial several years ago, which said "kakusei-zai yamemasu ka, ningen yamemasu ka?" ("Do you stop using drugs, or do you stop being human?").
