Winter has finally come to the small town where the main character lived.  It's a little, hilly village up north, with a port and streetcars.   He is an ordinary college student who did not have many friends.  After school, one of his few friends invites him to a party, but he refuses to go.  It is because of this girl whom he's always had a crush on.  Her name is Kaori Sakuragi, a pretty girl who lived next door to him.   That evening, as he walks back home from school, he witnesses Kaori kissing a man.

One evening, there was a knock on the door.  When he opens the door, he sees two policemen, and they ask, "would you happen to know a woman named Kaori Sakurai?"
