Sasha Lazard Trance-soprano
New York based vocalist, Sasha Lazard is rapidly becoming recognized
as one of the most innovative and extraordinary new talents on the
international music scene. Together with producer Mark Raskin, she
has pioneered an exciting new musical form. "Trance Opera" is a fusion of
classical art songs, Russian folk tunes and opera arias with contemporary
Drum/Bass and Electronica. The result is an unique and haunting new sound
that has captivated both classical devotees and rave-club audiences alike.
From Classical...
Sasha graduated from Bennington College and continued her studies at the
San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She then embarked on an Opera Career
singing in numerous prestigious chamber groups and festivals in San
Francisco, Italy and Austria. She returned to New York and began performing
in cabaret venues such as Don't Tell Mama's and Tatou. She appeared in the
Avant-Guard Opera Dennis Cleveland, staged at The Kitchen, and
originated the role of Diana in the world-premier production of the
Goddess of the Hunt at Carnegie Hall.
To Cutting Edge...
In 1997 Sasha began a collaboration with pop producer Anthony Vanger
and "Trance-Opera" was born. Under the title "Trance-Soprano," Sasha
unveiled her new sound at top venues in New York (Don Hill's, Life,
Joe's Pub, and Liquids) and Los Angeles (Luna Park, and
Les Deux Cafes) to awed audience response.
Building on her early success, she expanded her repertoire to include new
tracks with dance-mix masters Mark Kamins and Joey Moskowitz.
In July of 1999, she gave a critically acclaimed concert for over 8,000
people at Club Privilege (Ibiza, Spain), the largest nightclub in
Europe. The show was choreographed by Slam (of Madonna/"Blonde
Ambition tour" fame) and was part of a Summer concert lineup that included
artist RuPaul, Lenny Kravitz, Simply Red, and Gloria Gaynor.
Her evocative sound has also sparked the imagination of Hollywood. Last
spring she recorded the lead song in the Miramax English language version
of the Japanese box office smash, Princess Mononoke. The film
features the voices of Billy Bob Thornton, Minnie Driver, Claire Danes,
Billy Crudup, Jada Pinkett and Gillian Anderson and will be released in the
fall of 1999.
Most recently, Sasha's Trance-Opera version of Ave Maria was chosen
for the trailers and ads for Miramax's upcoming motion picture Holy
Smoke. The film was directed by Jane Campion, and stars Harvey Keitel
and Kate Winslet. She has also performed in the feature film Dark
Harbor (Hart/Sharp Entertainment) starring Alan Rickman and Polly
Walker. Additionally, the tracks O Del Mio Dolce Ardor and Ave
Maria were featured in Cinneville's Cement starring Chris Penn
and Sherilyn Fenn. Sasha also starred in a music video of the track Ave
Maria made in conjunction with the film.
Feature articles and photos have appeared in recent issues of Manhattan
File and Voge magazines. Sasha will be appearing in the November issue of
Allure.
