"Anime
San-Juushi", or "Anime Three Musketeers", is a 52 episode Japanese animation
based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas. It was produced by Gakken
and NHK Enterprises, and co-produced by NHK. Kunihiko
Yuyama is the Animation Director for this series. Anime San-Juushi
was first aired in Japan in 1987, and a movie edition was produced in 1989.
The
story is set in the early 17th century France, where King Louis XIII and
Queen Anne were the rulers
of the country. D'Artagnan, the lead character in the anime, went to Paris
to prove the size of a particular elephant. There, he met up with a mysterious
woman, Milady, to assist her in kidnapping the Queen's maid, Constance
Bonacieux, for a sum of money. Instead, he ended up falling in love with
Constance.
In
vowing to protect his beloved, D'Artagnan decided to become a Musketeer
so that he can always stay by Constance's side. D'Artagnan visits Captain
M. de Treville for the job of a Musketeer, and he meets up with 3 other
Musketeers: Athos, Aramis, and Porthos. But things doesn't always goes
as planned, D'Artagnan was being rejected, and he ended up becoming a bathwater
delievery boy... ...

The
storyline of Anime San-Juushi evolves around D'Artagnan, Constance, Hadashi
no Jean (best friend of D'Artagnan), and the 3 Musketeers. Towards the
middle episodes, the story unfolds to reveal a threatening plot by Milady,
where she conspires with the IronMask and Manson to take over the rulership
of France from King Louis XIII. But there is always D'Artagnan and the
3 Musketeers around to spoil their evil plans.
