Chapter 1
"Be careful with that!" The order rang through the basement ruins of Midgar. General Audrea Morgan watched critically as several soldiers lifted a giant supercomputer off the floor. Cloud Strife stood behind her. "What’s that one?"
"That’s a CRAY supercomputer, left over from my time.. I hope it still works." Audrea’s pet project was the reclamation of the data and storage from the old Midgar facilities, before anyone could get the brilliant idea to pick up where the Shinra family left off. Over the past week, her team had extracted much of the materials from Hojo's research, as well as a number of artifacts. The supercomputers were saved for last, since they were so heavy and hard to move. Audrea turned as she heard movement behind her. She saw several creatures lurking in the shadows. Sighing, she and Cloud pulled out swords. The Katana and the Ultima Weapon easily sliced through the monsters. Audrea and Cloud followed the computer out to the waiting trucks. Audrea looked at the ruin. "Let’s get out of here."
Cloud watched Audrea’s face, as she stared pensively at the computer. "What do you think's on there?" Cloud asked.
"I don’t know. Hopefully clues to my past … stuff… anything about what happened to me." Audrea sighed. She still couldn’t remember parts of her past. Unlike Mulder and Scully, who had full memories, the Mako and Hojo’s experiments affected her memory, and she still, even after all the time in the lifestream, had a hard time remembering her life before freezing. Granted, she was happy with her current life, but she was curious about who she was.
The trucks pulled up to the new government building complex in Junon. Reeve had was trying to keep it from looking too much like Shinra, and was trying to structure it as the government used to be, as it seemed to work. Audrea took the elevator up to her office.
"Sir, welcome back." The secretary greeted her. "You received a confidential package yesterday … and the General wants to see you as soon as you can."
"Is he busy now?"
"Not that I know of." Audrea knocked on Sephiroth’s door. "Enter." She went in.
"Sir."
He looked at her from across his desk. "How did it go?"
"Well along with what was in that vault, we recovered several computer components, including one supercomputer, as well as several smaller machines. I’m having them stored downstairs, and I’ve left orders that no one is to try and access them before I do. The items from the vault are in storage, so that we can catalog them as soon as possible."
He nodded. "Very well. When are you going to try and get into the computers?"
"Tomorrow morning, if we can get them powered up."
"Excellent. I shall look forward to reading your full report." Sephiroth stood and walked over to Audrea, folding her in an embrace. "I missed you. I’m glad you’re safe."
Audrea wrapped her arms around her husband. "You ready to go?"
"Yes. I was just waiting for you."
"All right. Let me get some stuff out of my office and then we can go." Audrea entered her office and closed the door. The package was lying on her desk, a thick envelope. She picked it up, considered it for a moment, and opened it. The letter was on top. As she read it, she sank down into her chair.
Sephiroth came in. "Audrea? What’s wrong?" He noticed the paper in her hand. "What’s that?"
"I … had some tests done a few weeks ago, and these are the results." She offered him the sheet. He looked at it.
"What does this mean?"
"I didn’t want to say anything in case I was wrong. But I wasn’t. According to this … I can’t … have…"
Sephiroth considered her. "I didn’t know you wanted a baby."
"Well, it really doesn’t matter now, does it," she retorted shaking. She walked over to him, tears forming in her glowing eyes.
Sephiroth held her. "I’m so sorry," he whispered.
"Let’s go home." Audrea said. He nodded.
As they drove along the Junon streets, Audrea noticed something out of the corner of her eye. "Hey."
"Hey what?"
"Turn right here. In fact, take the next three rights."
"Why?" Sephiroth asked, turning the car.
"We’re being followed I think. Old FBI trick."
As Audrea watched in the rear mirror, the car following them indeed did follow them around the turns. "We’re being followed."
"Who would want to follow us?"
"Don’t know. We have to get rid of them, though." Just then, the car turned off.
Sephiroth looked at his wife. "You’re being paranoid, just like your friend."
Audrea shook her head. "I know when I’m being followed."
