As a soldier Rei is one of the few who would whole-heartedly give life and limb for her cause.  Perhaps the most devoted  of all the senshi, her soul mission as Sailor Mars is to protect and defend those she loves and all she holds dear.  This mission has haunted her through death and will remain as her sole companion through the next few millenniums.  Having on several times risked her life and sometimes others to get the job done,  and get it done right, Mars proves time after time that she is not one to take her job lightly.   While at times it seems that Mars is an unmerciful hating barbarian, in truth she is far from that.  

Rei shows mercy in battle while fighting Cooan.   Having been abruptly stopped from capturing Chibi Usa by Yuuichiru, Cooan attacks him.   Rei comes running to see what is wrong, and is greeted by Cooan's Dark Fire.  Yuuichiru runs forth and to take the blunt of the blow.  Amazed, Cooan asks why would he protect a girl who doesn't love him.  He replies simply, "Because I love her."  Wow...^^  Oops I'm getting off the subject.  Yuuichirou passes out and Rei transforms.  Attention all villains:  Do not attack someone Rei cares for.  She fights Cooan's Dark Fire with her Burning Mandara.  Sensing that fire vs. fire is getting them no where, Cooan decides to head back to basics.  She knocks Sailor Mars down, then fly's back above to scorch Mars and Yuuichiru.  Mars manages to dodge most of the attack and still keep Yuuichirou safe, but one leg is badly injured.

As Cooan scoffs at the feeble attempts of Sailor Mars to keep Yuuichirou safe, Mars retorts that Cooan would know better if she loved anybody ( love...tee hee^^).  Cooan suddenly remembers her mission to kill Chibi Usa and turns, but Tuxedo Mask has gotten to her first. When she tries to chase after her, she is interrupted by a Burning Mandara.  She struggles to her feet, when more bad news appears. Rubeus wants to know whether or not the rabbit has been destroyed.  Cooan, thinking he is there to help her because he loves her, tells how Sailor Mars has gotten in her way..  Rubeus laughs and gives her a bomb with which to kill the rabbit and poor Rei-chan.   Abandoned by Rubeus, Cooan decides to take her pain out on everyone and threatens to blow up the temple.  Mars, who bore witness to all this, pleads with her to stop, but it is useless.   Cooan lifts her arm.  Before she can throw the bomb, it is whisked to safety by Venus' chain.  Sailor Jupiter then tries to deliver a tremendous kick to Cooan's midsection, which, to everyone's astonishment, is intercepted by Sailor Mars.  When a bewildered Cooan asks why, Sailor Mars replies  "Because you know love."   Sailor Mars then asks Cooan to allow herself a chance at a new life.  Cooan accepts and is healed by Sailor Moon's ginzuishou.

   Sailor Mars has a fiery side which shows every time she battles.  Though she knows mercy, she also knows how to kill.   Jadeite is living (sort of) proof.  In the manga, Rei senses something while at the fire.  She feels that something strange is about to happen.  The 6:00 bus  disappears every day, and so do the people onboard.  Rei then went to the sacred fire and saw the face of Jadeite grabbing Usagi.  Rei ran to the bus to save Usagi, and recognized the driver as the man in the fire.  As the bus drives away, Usagi (who hadn't gotten on yet) sees Rei slumped unconscious on the seat.  Usagi changes into a stewardess and jumps on the bus.  Usagi is alone in the void that Jaedite created, and sees Rei unconscious with Jadeite near her.  Meanwhile Ami and Luna transported to the place where Usagi and Rei were.  Ami and Usagi transform and Jadeite appeared with an awake Rei in a chokehold.  Mercury blinded Jadeite with her fog and he dropped Rei.  Sailor Moon trapped him with her tiara.   Mercury then threw Rei a transformation rod  Rei transforms and shouts "Evil Spirit Begone!" at Jadeite and kills him.  Sailor Mars, Moon and Mercury appear at the bus stop along with all the others who had disappeared.  Luna then explains to Sailor Mars who she is, and that she has the ability to manipulate the flame.
