When Dr.Gero, already transformed in #20, went back to his laboratory trying to escape from an angry SSJ Vegeta and planning to activate the powerful androids that he had created, #17 and #18, we learn that there was also a failed project, in which he tried to create an android without any human base. That project was #16, and after #17 killed Dr. Gero he and #18 decided to activate #16 also. #16 is very tall and muscular, with an orange mohawk and two earrings. The two cyborgues were not aware of it, but #16 was much more powerful than any of the two. However #16 revealed himself very different from his companion androids, he had a great love for nature and animals and apart from fulfilling the mission he had been programmed to, that was killing Son-Gokou, he had no interest to fight anyone else.

Although when Cell appears things follow a different path, seeing that the monster only intentions were to destroy the Earth, and initially absorb #17 and #18, to whom #16 had already become sympathizing too since they weren't unnecessarily mean and didn't kill just for fun, #16 eventually fights the 1st form Cell and reveals to be more powerful than the monster, but he eventually gets badly injured by Cell, when the monster reaches his 2nd stage after engulfing #17. Later on he also fails to prevent #18 from being engulfed by Cell. After this series of events #16 is in a very bad condition, and is taken by Bulma to her father's laboratory so that they may rebuild him and have him as an ally in the final fight against Cell. In this final fight #16 is destroyed beyond repair by Cell, which triggers Son-Gohan transformation in SSJ2.
