Known as Chiba Mamoru (“defender of the land”) in the Japanese version, Darien is one of the more tortured characters of the series.
An orphan, Darien lost his parents at an early age and lost his memory. As a result, he is a lonely, distant person. However, he dates several girls, including Rei, but is plagued by dreams of a princess. He and Serena only begin to date after their past is revealed, and the relationship is a stormy, complicated by their various duties. A further complication is the later presence of Rini (Chibi-Usa), their future child. |

During the Silver Millennium, Darien was the Prince of the Earth (Prince Endymion). However, when Queen Beryl attacked, he was killed and was sent with the rest of the court into the future by Queen Serenity.
Darien was reborn as Sailor Moon's protector, Tuxedo Mask, and for a long time served in that capacity without his conscious knowledge. After Queen Beryl's defeat, Darien and the others had no memories of the encounter. However, Darien's protective spirit, the Moonlight Knight, aided the Scouts in times of trouble. At the end of the Doom Tree series, the two parts are united and Darien regained his memories. In the future, Darien is known as the King of the Earth (King Endymion) and is married to Neo-Queen Serenity. Together, they have a daughter, Rini (Chibi-Usa). |
