Tomoe Hotaru (“earth firefly”) is the only character to keep her full name in both the Japanese original and the North American dub. Although she is a frail girl, Hotaru is gifted with the ability to heal others. However, her gift has made her an outcast at school.
She does eventually make a friend in Rini. However, Hotaru’s father (the scientist Professor Tomoe) is working toward bringing about the Silence, the destruction of the world. Hotaru, as Saturn, is the key to his evil plans. In the end, Sailor Moon goes against Sailors Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto and saves Hotaru’s life. The frail girl becomes an infant once again. Although her father survived the battle, Hotaru is raised by the other Outer Sailor Soldiers. |

Sailor Saturn is the Sailor Soldier of Destruction and Rebirth. Because of her awesome powers, Sailors Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto worked to prevent her awakening. Despite their efforts, Hotaru emerges as the Silent Messiah and almost destroys the world.
After her rebirth as an infant, Saturn is raised by the other Outer Sailor Soldiers. She matures quickly and eventually becomes a Sailor Soldier once again, wielding the Silence Glaive. However, because her powers are so dangerous, Saturn must use caution in her attacks. In Jupiter’s Gone, Hotaru is now an adult and can use her healing powers without great injury to herself. She and Rini still have a close friendship. Like her friend, she is not romantically attached and has no children. |
