Recently, I posted a request asking for places to buy anime-related goods in Hong Kong. I have edited responses into this short shopping guide. Thanks to rk7151@cs.albany.edu, hbchan@tiger.uwaterloo.ca, py@robots.oxford.ac.uk, yip@wsl.dec.com, ce3wa3bh@maccs.dcss.mcmaster.ca, Johnnie_Leung@mtsg.ubc.ca, HECCC%CUNYVM.BITNET@lilac.berkeley.edu, and a318yung@one.cdf.utoronto.ca for contributing to this guide. If anyone would like to add anything, mail me, and I'll put it into my next draft. I hope that the guide proves useful. They usually have very large toy departments, carrying manga, anime posters, calenders, etc. Some even offer video tape/disc rental. Some of the names given to me are: Mitsukoshi, Mitsusakaya, YaoHan, UNY, Sogo, DaiMaru, and Isetani. Sogo and DaiMaru are located in Causeway Bay (I believe they are near Food Street). I do not know where the other stores are. You may want to try looking them up in the local phone directory. Shops I was told that there are many small anime shops located in plazas all over Hong Kong. One person recommended checking any shopping arcade that doesn't look like a boutique plaza. Some examples below: In Causeway Centre, on Sugar Street (Tong Jie), there are some small shops specialized in Japanese animation stuff. (videos, cassettes, models) In Wanchai, there are two large shopping centers - Tai Yau Centre and Chai Shing Centre, one in Henessary Road, the other in Tamson Road, that have shopping specialized in Japan animation. (Posters, Records, Video Discs) Swan Records at the C C Wu Building at Hennessey Road, Wanchai. (sells posters, records, and NTSC video tapes) Apollo Bookstore in Kowloon (Chinese name: Ji (wisdom) - Yun (source)) somewhere on the 2nd floor of a building on Ka-La-Fun-Road in TsimShaTsui. A Japanese bookstore with Anime mags, LDs and art-books etc. There is a large software plaza called Golden Shopping Arcade in Sham Shui Po (Kowloon). They sell Hu-cards and CD-ROMs for the PC Engine, Nintendo, Sega, and GameBoy. A store named (yu-jau-shun) [Universe-ship] inside a corridor between Black-Cloth-Street and White-Cloth-Street in Mongkok. It is in a very run-down shopping mall next to the China Travel Agency Mongkok branch, opposite to a playground. It has a good collection of miscellaneous anime-related toys, stationery, books, models, posters etc. There's also a small music store next to the Mongkok Police Office. A store on the 2nd (or 3rd?) floor of Golden Shopping Arcade opposite to the Lai-Sing Cinema on Nathan Road, Mongkok. | |* ------------------/ \---------------------------- Nathan Road ------------------\ /---------------------------- | Princece |* Mong Kok | Edward Rd W. | Police Station | | ------------------/ \---------------------------- ------------------\ /---------------------------- * | | Here!! | | * = Entrance of MTR Prince Edward Station.
