More Info: MechanicsSix months after the conclusion of the first Gundam television series, toy manufacturer Bandai released the first Gundam plastic model kits. As Gundam's popularity grew in re-runs, and then boomed with the release of the compilation movies, Bandai capitalized on the phenomenon by producing a series of mobile suit variants in model form. The first in the series was released in April 1983, a year after the premiere of the Gundam III movie.
These mobile suit variants were created by Kunio Okawara, the mechanical designer for the original series. The kit manuals and related publications provide detailed back stories for each variant, including biographical details on the ace pilots of the One Year War and information on the mobile suits' development histories.
