I was thinking about what Red might do in ST3, and I got the idea that
maybe they might go backwards in time and focus on the precursor to the
Hanagumi, that group with Yoneda and Sakura's father (the name escapes me
right now). Kind of like how the new Star Wars will focus on Anakin (sp?)
Skywalker. Of course, the counterpart to Oogami would probably have to be
Sakura's father (his name escapes me too. :/)
However, I can't imagine how they could make ST3 part dating sim with this
approach. Of course, then the question becomes, "How essential is the
dating aspect per se to ST?" Without the dating, ST would be like a more
run-of-the-mill strategy RPG. But I think a ST story could still be
compelling without the dating. And even though a male character wouldn't
end up being your love interest (Sakura's father+Yoneda! :O Not that there
would be anything wrong with that ;), they could still have a confidence
index, with their battle stats modified by how well you interact with them.
ST has a good mix of linearalty and non-linearality, thanks to the LIPS and
whatnot, and come to think of it, the dating aspect probably wouldn't be
necessary to maintain that mix.
I wouldn't mind seeing network play in ST3, as long as it's confined to a
Vs. mode, which they should definitely have. Multiplayer goodness is the
only thing that ST is missing.
