Selected Overviews of New Series:

SURVIBEE
by Tsunomaru
Started in #31, 1999 (image from #31)

The eccentric author of MON MON MON and MIDORI NO MAKIBAOH returns with, surprise surprise, another manga based on non-humans. But this time, he is trying out something new—a serious story with hardly any gags. The generation before the current Jump readership (i.e. people in their mid-to-late twenties) can see a similarity to the old series MINASHIGO HATCHI in this series, where a whole lot of death surrounds our honey bee hero. Being one of the few honey bees to survive a huge wasp attack, will Bazoo be able to take the last egg to a safe colony?

TENNIS NO OUJISAMA
by Konomi Takeshi
Started in #32, 1999 (image from #32)

One of two new series this season to come out of last autumn's stretch of short stories, this series brings a new take to the concept of tennis manga. Echizen Ryouma is a top-notch tennis player—but he is only in seventh grade. His shots are accurate and powerful, his technique surpasses many players older than him. And what's more impressive, he kicks ass even when he is "saving his energy" by holding the racket with his "bad" hand! What will happen to Ryouma as he enters a normal junior high school?

CHILDRAGON
by Azuma Keishin
Started in #33, 1999 (image from #33)

The second to come out from a short story. Osanai Ryuuji calls himself the "ChilDragon" (i.e. a Child of the Dragon)—and firmly believes that he is a reincarnation of the late Bruce Lee. He has to gather a group of 100 friends to be authorized to train in the mountain where the legend of the Dragon is still alive. Sounds like an action manga, right? Don't be fooled, it's more of a gag manga, thanks to the wacky personality that Ryuuji has.

ZOMBIE POWDER
by Kubo Taito
Started in #34, 1999 (this issue)

The last of the new crop has what seems to be a powerful start. The premise of the story is that in the world, there is a powder called Zombie Powder that brings the dead back to life, and gives eternal life to the living. The long journey for little Elwood begins when he meets Akutabi Gamma, a "deadly" criminal with a huge bounty on his head. Gamma is a Powder Hunter that seeks to collect 12 Rings of the Dead to acquire the Zombie Powder, while Elwood is just a little pickpocket. What new experiences will Elwood have as he goes on a quest for the sacred powder, guided by Gamma?
