SHAMAN KING
by Takei Hiroyuki
Started in #31, 1998 (3 volumes available)

Overview: Asakura Yoh appears to be nothing but a lazy transfer student. But as his new classmate Manta found out, Yoh is actually a shaman who wishes to become the best of the shamans, the Shaman King. With training from his fiancée Anna, Yoh and his friend/spirit Amidamaru enters the Shaman Fight, the tournament which will decide who the King will be. After his devastating loss in the second match, Yoh decides to go back to his homeland to strengthen his ability as a Shaman. Did his one week stay in the Afterlife Cave do any good?
This Issue—52nd Reincarnation: Evolution - When the group arrives at the Asakura estate for dinner Manta marvels at the sheer size of the house. Later that night, as Manta thinks about why he came all the way out to Izu, Yoh appears and thanks him for thinking of him as a friend. Just then, Yoh's grandfather Youmei appears—with Anna and Amidamaru in tow. Youmei tells Yoh to show the effect of the training by knocking down all of his shikigami (spiritual materializations of leaves; i.e. Youmei's "over-soul"). As the shikigami attack, Yoh realizes that what was all but a blur before is clearly visible now, and quickly slices through every leaf with the new and improved "over-soul."

ONE PIECE
by Oda Eiichiro
Started in #34, 1997 (9 volumes available)

Overview: Monkey D. Luffy is a boy set out to sail the Grand Line, find the legendary treasure One Piece and become the king of pirates. His small crew consists of swordsman Roronoa Zorro, navigator/cartographer Nami, gunner "Captain" Usopp, and chef Sanji. The five teens arrive in Logue Town, the town known as "the beginning and the end". What ends, and what new beginnings, will they face in the town that Gold Roger started and ended his life?
This Issue—Episode 97: Kitetsu the Third - Nami goes shopping for clothes. Luffy stands in awe at the spot where Gold Roger was executed. Meanwhile, Zorro looks for another sword, and enters a sword shop. The shopkeeper tries to rip Zorro off, but is thwarted by the young woman who looks like Zorro's lost love, Kuina. This young woman tells him that his remaining sword is one of 21 "Masterpiece" swords. She also finds Kitetsu the Third, a haunted "Craft" sword, in the bargain bin. The shopkeeper says he can't sell Kitetsu because it has cursed all its users to death, but Zorro receives the sword when he doesn't get a scratch—even after tossing the sword and giving it a shot to land into his arm. The shopkeeper is impressed, and gives Zorro another "Craft" sword, the Yubashiri. Meanwhile, Captain Smoker of the Marines waits for the woman (named Tashigi) ... and Sanji notices a beautiful woman in the distance that looks awfully familiar to readers who took note of the past splash page images ...

HOUSHIN ENGI
by Fujisaki Ryu, based on the translation by Anou Tsutomu
Started in #28, 1996 (15 volumes available)

Overview: Taikoubou is a sennin (a wizard of sorts) sent on a mission to seal away the souls of the evil temptress Datsuki and her henchmen because she is ruining the land of Chouka by controlling its emperor. But this project, called the Houshin Project, had to do with much more than just Datsuki's whims. With most of the sennin from Kongrong sealed away in what is seemingly the armageddon between Kongrong forces and Kingou forces, how is Taikoubou going to fight Bunchu, the sennin from Kingou that pleads allegiance to the emperor of Chouka?
This Issue—Episode 147: Symbolism of Aging and Wind of the Divided Path (first half) - Kokukirin managed to transport Bunchu away from the mess in which Kouhiko lost his life, but in the process loses its own life. Bunchu thinks back on the old days, and realizes it was none other than Kouhiko that gave him a feeling of something other than loneliness. Taikoubou approaches the ailing Bunchu, and asks for a duel. Suupuushan tells Taikoubou to stop, but our hero says that he must overcome Bunchu no matter how he does it. After a few rounds of intense fighting, Bunchu pauses—and tells Taikoubou that he believed that bringing back the old Ying would turn back time. He further tells Taikoubou to try making a human realm that completely lack sennin, and bids farewell as he stands on the cliff's edge.

RUROUNI KENSHIN
by Watsuki Nobuhiro

Kenshin manages to see the truth behind the tragedies planned out by Enishi; now that the crew has arrived at Enishi's mansion, Kenshin stands up alone against Enishi to save his loved ones.
This Issue—Act 247: Berserker's Nerve Endings - As the nerves pop up all over Enishi's body, the gallery watches in anticipation. The results on Enishi's overall speed amazes all. Enishi claims that this evolution of reflex nerve endings came from his resolve to seek revenge on Kenshin for Tomoe's death—that his hatred has grown so much that it started to feel every firing of the synapses. Sanosuke and Aoshi stand up to aid Kenshin, but are stopped by Yahiko, who says Kenshin has not lost yet. Kenshin agrees, saying that he must finish this duel by himself, and counters Enishi's next attack with his own Ryuumeisen.
