The Urusei Yatsura phenomenon of the 80's produced 6 movies in addition to the long running comic book and television show. For fan and casual viewer alike, these are among the finest anime films ever made. Apart from being well done, each movie is remarkable for its variety. The television show underwent many dramatic changes throughout its run and this is reflected in the movie series. Every movie is noticeably different from one another with dramatically different styles. In 1982, the first movie "Only You" truly put Urusei Yatsura in the mainstream. It is a fantastical journey full of romance, adventure and comedy through space in the style of pulp sci-fi movies of the past. The second movie "Beautiful Dreamer" released in 1984 seems to take a more earthbound setting. It explores the boundries of time and reality in a surrealist film that questions what is real and what's merely a dream. Maybe they're the same thing after all. Like all Urusei Yatsura, it's bizarre and wacky, but full of food for thought. The third movie in the series 1985's "Remember my Love" found Urusei Yatsura in its peak of success. Against the backdrop of a theme park, it becoms a tale of two souls seperated yet united against insidious magical forces. In 1986, Urusei Yatsura's 5th and final season on the air came to a close. Yet another movie was released, "Lum the Forever". This strange and ponderous film that dares to toy with this town of Tomobiki. The result is but an enigma. Most audiences did not understand this movie and therefore it did not achieve the same success as the first three, but nevertheless it truly is a wonderous movie to behold. Shortly after Rumiko Takahashi ended the manga, in 1988 "Urusei Yatsura Kanketsu-hen" was released, based upon the final chapters of the comic. This movie is the one that concludes the adventures of the residents of Tomobiki and the aliens who infest them. With the end of the series, this takes the situations and relationships to a new plateau while leaving the continuing story up to the viewer's imagination. Finally in 1991, to celebrate 10 years since it's first TV broadcast, a 6th Urusei Yatsura movie was released. "Itsudatte my Darling" sought to revitalize the popularity of the show, but alas it was not to be. It has a lower production value and is drastically different from the UY of old. But that is to be expected in such a situation. These pages feature reviews of each movie, and extensive summaries of each written by myself and J.M. Steadman who also manages the fanfiction section of the site. For those of you who have not seen the movies yet, we hope this will compel you to watch them for yourself. For those of you who have seen them, this will bring back some fine memories. Tanoshinde kudasai. |
